Komata, yesterday morning I was in Murupara. Luxon said recently, he knows it is tough out there and Willis said, “Hang in there, I know things are hard.”
What a sad and depressed place Murupara is. Niether Luxon or Willis will ever visit there or get to see how depressed and downtrodden the people there are, or what a lonely desolate place it is where many good Taxpayers of New Zealand reside, paying for their very large salaries and opulent lifestyle. Both are just divorced from reality.
Had the same culture shock in Raetahi. Ironically the dinosaur house was ok, but the one operating shop selling second hand goods – mostly estate clearances by the looks of it- hadn’t opened that day. There was a reasonable cafe which seemed to be the community hub, and a place that sold art which was oddly out of place. These enterprises all had ‘cash only’ signs at the door and the counter. The only word I have to describe the place is grim.

Morning, I took luxcindas advice yesterday in an attempt to get rich quick. We went to the Hen, the Chicks, Ocean beach, Ararua rock, Taiharuru head and God knows how many places in between. We ended up with 2 average snapper and a trevally. Only cost about $350 in gas. At least it was a nice day.
dang T thats just fishing tho isnt it. must be a sizeable boat with a big donkey on the back? stupid boy envies bigger boats until the fuel bill is mentioned. my mate had a massive stabicraft a few years back but at 5-600 per day in fuel and he found it too hard to find enough mates to tag along and chip in so sold and downsized. my lil frewza and its 70hp yammy usually only 25-30L fuel for a good day out, 50L if we go for a big excursion and explore quite a ways away.
was it just a no bite day or has the place been thrashed?
My fishing boat has a paddle and is powered by Weetbix and bananas. At least a bad day’s fishing isn’t compounded by a rogering of a fuel bill.

Well, T I was at Te Araroa, almost as far East as one can get on Tea Eaka Au Maui, 3 hours from Opotiki and the next closest fuel station. Fuel there was cheaper than almost anywhere in the central North Island at the Waitomo Fuel Stop. Just seems many of we Hoi Polloi are getting well and truly rogered in the bank account by greedy Servo Proprietors
I wouldn’t mind so much if it wasn’t for the fact that every drop of fuel imported into this country since the refinery shut down comes through Marsden Point. Must be at least a k away, they could send their staff down to bring it up in buckets and halve the price.God knows they do little else.

Talked to the neighbour this morning and he tells me the cops arrested two guys for a heap of local burglaries.
They had been allowed to live in a house that was going to be demolished and they knew all the local cameras and ways to access different areas.
They had removed part of the floor in the house to hide the goods.
One of them helped me out in the early days of cleanup so it’s bloody annoying. He was always nice to me.

Have seen a stationary baler, where the bale was tied with wire.
Sooty living out in the boon docks, slightly advanced in not using a horse & grab, and horse with buck rakes, while still making haystacks after WW2
For rol, a flagon of beer afterwards was the way to go with saveloys & tomato sauce on buttered bread.
Slow & painful hopefully. For two months of every year my life revolved around carting hay. I’d start at 5.30am carting stock to the works & get back to the yard in time to go out to the paddock & lift haybales until 10pm. Rinse & repeat. Even Xmas day we’d cart hay if the weather looked like packing it in.
Yet the ‘conventional’ haybaler didn’t come on the scene until after WW2. I’ve seen old film of an early machine operating somewhere in Otago. It rolled the hay rather than packed it then tied a string around the ‘bale’ which resembled the shape of a rolled up carpet mat.
Probably a bit lighter to handle than those made by some arsehole cocky trying to save cartage costs by packing the bales up to 25kg.
oh how things have changed old boy, theres good machinery now of alsorts that either pickup and stack hundreds of bales at a time or theres arcusin or bale baron packers that pack and tie 9-21 bales into a large square bale. they can process up to 900 per hour, quite a few operate up around canterbury doing 100k+ bales per season.
i still hate the things tho, my hayfever hates it even more so. i prefer doin balage and silage, moist grass and bulk is much nicer to deal with

one dairy farm i worked on back in the day was all idiot bricks, would have to handstack 4000 bales every summer what a mission that was.
Old man decided at 12c a bale baled, it was too dear. Went back to stacking loose hay, me running the pusher, brother on the frontend loader, old man on stack.
when i was a kid i remember going with dad to help his mate do hay stacks, 1 was grass hay and the other was grain (oats?) and i was blown away how those guys could flick the hay so high up onto the stack with a pitchfork.
then several months later we went back and they setup the big traction engine and cut those 2 big stacks into chaff… hundreds and hundreds of sacks of the stuff.
