POPULATION EXPANDS SLOWER, AGES
Our population rose to 5,356,700 as at December 2024, according to a Stats NZ release. That is a rise of +48,500, of which +21,400 was from a natural births/deaths net increase, and +27,100 frim migration. The total annual growth is equivalent to adding one of Whanganui, or Upper Hutt, or Timaru, or Queenstown. Or at least that is what StatsNZ claims based on changes from the 2018 Census. They haven’t yet started using the 2023 Census base. We should also note that while the 65+ aged cohort is holding, the data shows continuing falls for most younger groups. So the median age is at a record high of 38.2 years,
MUCH OLDER MOTHERS
The same updated population data shows that the median age of women giving birth reached 31.5 years in 2024. That is its highest since records began in 1962. The lowest median age recorded was 24.8 years in 1972. By 1994, the median age had risen to 28.5 years.
NEW DAIRY SUSTAINABILITY INCENTIVES
Fonterra said it will pay dairy farmers more if they achieve their climate targets. The new incentives will be funded through separate agreements with Mars and Nestlé, who have been working with Fonterra to make progress towards their individual sustainability goals by supporting farmers to reduce emissions. This includes a new Co-op Difference Payment of between 1 and 5 cents/kgMS for qualifying farmers. Plus there are funding incentives to improve emissions efficiency, and based on last season’s achievements, 87% of farmers would’ve been eligible. In addition, there is a contestable 10-25 cents per kgMS Emissions Incentive payment for farmers who achieve the Co-operative Difference and have one of the lowest emissions footprints in the Co-op. That could be paid to about 350 dairy farmers.

The owner of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, Meta, has confirmed its plans to build the longest subsea cable ever – by a long chalk. Officially named Project Waterworth, the data cable was first revealed in October last year by OpenCables founder Sunil Tagare.
Project Waterworth will be longer than what Tagare thought, 50,000 kilometres and not 40,000, so the suggested US$2 billion construction cost could be a bit higher. In comparison, the Southern Cross Cable system, which is one of New Zealand’s important international links, has grown to 30,500 km of subsea and terrestrial links, arranged in a triple-ring configuration for resilience.
The published cable route map shows it going from the East Coast of the US, with landing stations in Brazil, and South Africa, reaching India. From there, Project Waterworth will land in Australia, probably Darwin, before continuing to the West Coast of the United States. Tagare suggested the India landing station will be in Chennai.

What do Netflix and Uber have in common?
Where it becomes quite entertaining is that ultimately the head office for Netflix appears to be an address in a very unassuming building at 1209 Orange St, . Wilmington, Delaware in the United States. Delaware is a very tax favourable jurisdiction within the United States, and this particular address is so favourable that it is registered address of no fewer than 285,000 U.S. companies, including Uber.
That somewhere so modest is the home to so many companies is entertaining but also points to the serious issue of highly sophisticated tax planning where apparently income is earned in a jurisdiction but little or no income tax is paid.
In fairness to Netflix, notwithstanding its income tax position, it’s highly likely that it will be paying a substantial amount of GST. That’s because its customer base is individuals who will not be GST registered and therefore will not be able to recover the GST paid.
Incidentally, Visa and Mastercard are two other companies that we know very little about but have a significant effect here. Neither company have published financial statements for almost 10 years now. The revenue they earn on fees probably runs to hundreds of millions of dollars, but we just don’t know what portion is being taxed here. What Netflix is doing is a bigger issue than perhaps is generally appreciated.
Time to rethink our reporting requirements?
Given how opaque these transactions are, perhaps we need to rethink our rather relaxed approach to reporting and filing of a company’s financial statements, particularly in relation to multinationals. Interestingly, Australia now requires large multinational groups with an Australian presence to submit data on their global financial and tax footprint to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), which will give more disclosure where around international profits are being booked. The Post approached the Minister of Revenue, Simon Watts, for comment and said that a similar proposal was not under consideration. What next?
The French investigation of Netflix is just another example of how many tax authorities around the world are looking at this question of where’s that income being really taxed and wanting justification for enormous fees that seem to end up in tax havens. But then, as I said last week, we now have the potential threat of the United States under the new Trump administration not favouring such investigation activities. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
