I have resigned as a member of the Waitangi Tribunal.
The Treaty is our founding document; two peoples peacefully agreeing to form a nation.
When in Parliament, I supported the tribunal being able to investigate historical breaches of the Treaty.
Over the summer, I have been reading the tribunal’s recent reports and doing my own research.
The Treaty is clear. It is a preamble and three articles. We also have the instructions to Governor Hobson.
The Crown offered its protection, guaranteed property rights and extended the rights of British citizenship.
In return, Māori ceded sovereignty, agreed to the Crown having a right of pre-emption and accepted the duties of citizenship.

n my letter of resignation, I have recommended the Government implement its coalition agreement and upgrade the tribunal by appointing a senior High Court judge, as was done when the tribunal was first set up.
The tribunal insults the chiefs when it says the chiefs did not mean to accept the Crown’s protection, create a nation, protect their property rights and extend citizenship to all Māori.
I will not participate in turning the Treaty into a socialist manifesto.
Ignoring the issue is not the answer. It is time for the Prime Minister to lead and uphold that there is one Treaty, one country and one citizenship.

Yesterday on HYS I had a rant about Pak’nSave, Wanganui insisting on a customer supplying personal information after spending over $1000 at their wretched shop.

We are living in a police state where even the citizen’s weekly grocery shopping is subject to scrutiny.

$1000 is not a large sum of money. It seems that the requirement slips under the radar at many retail outlets because purchases are automatically linked to loyalty cards which are backed with the shopper’s personal information. Personally I find the requirement intrusive, nosy & ultimately unnecessary. I could nearly get my head around a tax avoidance issue if cash was the payment medium but no financial institution issues debit or credit cards without verifying their customer’s details.

I’m curious though, what happens if you’ve paid for your goods but refuse to provide details. Or, if you provide details, presumably the supie has no right to request ID to verify them. Once you’ve paid for items, you own them and cannot legally be deprived of them, so the supie can’t choose to process a refund and repossess them. Nor can they detain you.
So my feeling is that you tell them to fuck off, and if anyone tries to stop you, threaten them with a charge of assault if they touch you. They also cannot prevent you from leaving if you haven’t committed a criminal act. And I’d suggest that the supie would be in trouble, not the customer.

Absolutely failing. A friends daughter had a baby in Auckland Hospital the other day. She needed surgery. The fucking light didn’t work and there was only one anaesthetist and he was busy. The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. Its a major organisational fuckup. The actual nurses and doctors are not to blame, but the managers and pen pushers.

Farmer who invented edible bale netting, Kiwi Econet, gets overseas interest in product.
The Orepuki deer farmer, who invented a non-polluting baleage wrap that animals can eat, has just received his first shipment of plant fibre bale netting from India.
Baleage is a way of storing forage to preserve it as livestock feed. The big round bales are normally fed out to dairy cows, beef cattle, sheep and deer over winter.
Up until now, the wrap that holds the feed bales together has been made out of plastic.
“You can’t recycle it, you can’t do anything with it. Some farmers bury it, some burn it. It’s a serious problem,” Lightfoot told Country Life.
Cows have also been known to eat discarded plastic bale netting.
Initially it was going to be made out of hemp fibre, but legal restrictions in the United States, relating to THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol – a psychoactive substance found in hemp at low levels), prevents the use of hemp and its byproducts in livestock feed.
“So for me, if I ever wanted to export to America, it was a no-no. So then I came up with jute fibre.”
