A mass signal fault caused chaos on Wellington’s train lines Thursday morning, with hundreds of commuters stranded on platforms and major delays on the roads.
Metlink announced around 7am that all of the region’s rail services were suspended due to a mass signals outage.
They obtained clearance to resume services just before 8am – only for some services to stop again after 9am for around half an hour.
In the meantime, traffic slowed to a crawl for those that chose to drive into the city instead.
That is only part of the region’s litany of woes over public transport. For the past few years the train service which carries hundreds upon hundreds of public servants & seat polishers from their Wairarapa homes to their “employment” in Wellington has varied from bad to non-existent.
Trains are cancelled at whim to be replaced by buses which can’t carry the volume of passengers. The latest excuse is staff shortages, before that it was old rolling stock, before that it was signals, before that it was lack of track maintenance. Always excuses never action. Metlink, the Wellington Regional Council’s public transport arm contract Transdev to run the services. Their website tells us that “Transdev provides Wellington with a world-class, user-friendly and reliable rail service to 13 million customers each year since 2016.”
Transdev’s managing director for Wellington Tonia Haskell fronted questions from Wairarapa mayors at Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Wairarapa Committee on Tuesday. She’s pretty bloody hopeless & all she could do is apologise. The Wairarapa Times Age reported her as saying:
#. “Of a pool of twelve Wairarapa staff, four were on long-term sick or injury leave, she said………..Seven were required to run a regular train service on weekdays which left little room for sick or holiday leave for the remaining staff.”
Apparently they are running schools to train more staff but most of the latest intake failed their shunting exam which says little for the quality of the recruits.
Like anything & everything NZ local government gets its hands on transport is a clusterfuck. They couldn’t run a pissup in a brewery.
