No problem with a minimum wage but do have a problem with paying children the same as an adult. You cannot put an old head on young shoulders. Pay them by their level of work ability and skills. Thats fair.
If they raised the minimum wage but got rid of tipping it would be almost cost neutral to the consumer.

Random thoughts on the Trump tarriff thing.
Originally tarriffs were designed to protect local industries. Prior to the third labour government NZ had significant tarriffs to protect our manufacturing base against the cheaper production costs due to scale in larger economies. This resulted in much higher pricing for NZ consumers. Think clothing, electronics and motor vehicles. In recent years China and other cheap labour jurisdictions have made it impossible to compete. The game changer this time is that robotics and AI will make it possible to establish factories in the US that will be competitive with lower wage economies. This will of course take time but the trends are already there. Initial price increases due to new tarriffs are also likely to be muted as companies will not be able to just pass on the cost without affecting sales volumes so I am thinking that the projected inflationary spiral will not occur, at least not from tarriffs.
the whole point of trumps tariffs was bringing jobs back to america, replacing them with ai and robots fully defeats the purpose of it but i guess a factory with 50 human jobs overseeing robots is still better than zero jobs i guess.

I had this idea since Trump’s 1st term tariffs, where a Chinese oligarch had stacked up thousands of tonnes of aluminium in Mexico but Trump upset that apple cart.
So that was all then re-exported from Mexico to Vietnam, and one would figure that Chinese oligarch did very well for the past 4 years.
My first Plan A was to consider Norfolk Island, though Aussie had fully annexed it, but hoped that it may not have tariffs applied.
Then Plan B, as I had plans to follow on the coat-tails of Ardern’ father when he was Commissioner of the Tokelau Islands;– why would the USA tariff the Tokelau Islands.
I was ready to purchase a variety of products from New Zealand, and eventually from other countries like Vietnam & Cambodia.
All to develop a hub, so as to export on from the Tokelau Island, and no USA tariffs would be applied.
The Cook Islands would have suited even better, easier to fly in & out of, but they were already onto things; like registering ships, particularly the “Dark Fleet”.
Passport credentials will also become very profitable for the Cooks to so I figure they would muscle in on my plans..

That all comes down to what China did during Trumps last term to get around the system. On a side note I read on a Sovereign Man email this morning that there are some real cock ups in the way the tarriffs have been calculated by the Trump administartion. It seems that any trade imbalance has been assumed to be caused by tarriffs. If true then obviously this is nonsense as trade with a large country like the US will never balance exactly even if there are no tarriffs on US goods. I wonder if this is how NZ’s 20% was calculated and had nothing to do with gst?
The US is saying they are pissed that Aus (and presumably NZ) don’t import their beef. Originally I heard Aus said NO due to mad cow threat but now it is because the US pump their beef full of hormones. Finance Minister Nicola Willis says Donald Trump’s tariff policies could derail New Zealand’s economic recovery, which was expected to gather pace this year.
The Treasury estimated in December that gross domestic product would increase by 3.3% in the year ending June 2026, having grown just 0.5% in the year ending this June.
But those bets are off, after the US president threw the global trading system and financial markets into chaos with steep tariffs on all imports, particularly those from the Asia-Pacific region.
Willis told reporters the Treasury’s initial assessment was these tariffs would reduce the economic growth of our trading partners to roughly 2%—down from 2.5%—in the 2026 year.
