  1. Economic Development Minister Phil Twyford revealed today there was a little-known category for border exemptions for foreigners deemed essential to a project of “significant economic value”
He was granted powers by Cabinet to oversee the special applications on April 21, about a month after New Zealand closed its borders to all non-citizens and residents.

The criteria applicants have to meet include having a talent that can’t be met by a Kiwi, involvement in a project which is time-critical and provides “significant economic value” or wider benefit to the economy, Twyford said.

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12333398&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=nzh_fb&fbclid=IwAR05KNGXGe3r8tWlthv9n6QBR76fxZsuZ1nOP0__FD_IIjodsWjI9_mIhD0

There were 47 local productions which were shut down for lockdown and some had already been able to come back online, like Shortland Street, by working within industry guidelines.

By last Tuesday, Immigration New Zealand had received 9,140 border exemption requests – 1478 were granted.

Around half of those making requests made it under the “family of a New Zealand citizen or resident” or “New Zealand based family of a temporary visa holder in New Zealand” categories.

Most of the remaining requests were made under “critical humanitarian travel”, followed by the “other essential worker” and “essential health worker” categories.

So now fail Phil has also become dodgy Phil.

  2. It appears that foreigners are getting exemptions to enter NZ, for movie-making in the quoted example. So why are they stalling the Americas Cup teams? If any four words should be striking fear into our hearts, they are “Economic Development Minister Phil Twyford”

“The call comes as it was revealed yesterday that hundreds of foreigners have already been allowed through our closed borders — including key production crew on the blockbuster Avatar sequels.

  3. Kea’s raucous cousins are probably not into conspiracy theories, though the could be conspiring to attack a 4G tower, believing it is 5G?
Are they getting a cold or a sniffle, that has upset them, but will still not be vaccinated. 🙂
Perhaps those parrots conspire to save people from being vaccinated?

  4. I was reading an article from some NIWA boffin about how the North will continue to experience significant drought an there is likely to be no rain in the foreseeable future. That tosser should get a new crystal ball or try looking out the window. It rained all night and there is surface flooding all over the place up here. The forecast up to the weekend is atrocious. How much do we pay these drop kicks to come up with this drivel?

    • Yeah, nah RoL, this one was on amatuer hour stuff up.
Either you find some brown faces to fix the naysayers from the start, or you respond that the line up has been chosen entirely on merit irrespective of race, gender or creed. This sort of ‘deer in headlights’ is appalling from people who know exactly how things work in Wellington.
The back down on the MAGA hat, the error over who’s native, the south of average performance in Question Time, and that awful zoom session thing on FB last night to ‘get to know Todd’ doesn’t inspire confidence at all.

      11

      • Not toe the line they need to hold it. FFS the hat thing and the Maori thing were entirely predictable. It will get better, it was a now or never push for the leadership. Little lead up time to prepare and they should also know that no quarter would be given.
It should also be acknowledged that many ‘white’ folk such as Paul Goldsmith and Todd Muller himself have not lived ives isolated from the Maori world and have many connections and understandings not defined by blood.

        9

        0

    • I suspect any one of the commentators here could fire back at the media and talk over them FAR better than Muller did. How you take on the leadership of a party under fire from a wittingly hostile media and NOT be ready for them is fucking astonishing. No, it’s incompetent, that’s what it is.

  5. If I go into a shop that demands I give my contact details at the door, can the staff use my details for any purpose other than contact tracing in the event of a Covid-19 outbreak involving the store?
For example, I needed to order an item that was not in stock, and the assistant reached for the clipboard to transfer my details to the order. (Not helpful to have them ring M. Mouse at DPMC, so I had to give my ‘other’ details.)
Is the store staff member in breach of the Privacy Act for using my details in a manner not intended when it was given?
Can the names and phone numbers given be used say, for marketing purposes?

    7

    0

      • A retail store is not a public place, there are always conditions of entry.
If the retailer requires the wearing of silly hats as a condition of entry that is his/her prerogative.
It is then my choice to comply or to take my custom elsewhere.
In this climate however the information gathering is required by government and the retailer could be required to close the store if they do not comply. It is also universal so I cannot avoid it by trading with another store.
So my question remains – what restriction is there on the use of my personal information gathered for the purpose of contact tracing in the event of Covid-19 outbreak?

Note: I regard it a a citizen’s duty to resist laws which are stupid, and will continue to provide ‘alternative facts’ when compelled.

        11

        0

        • Please forgive me if I’m wrong.
But I thought you did not need to give details for a shop or supermarket. I have given landline no before if I have to. Certainly not no address. Given half a chance it will be wrong.

    • I had this argument with a woman at a Cafe the other day.
I politely stated that I am NOT willing to write my name, address and phone number on a piece of paper for any shitbag to see/take a photo of etc. (The register was sitting on a table for any person to take note of)
My family’s privacy and safety is very important to me- I explained to this woman that there are some very dangerous and unscrupulous people out there. (There are good reasons I am on the unpublished Electoral roll)
She told me I was being paranoid and we mutually agreed that I would take my money elsewhere…

      11

      0

      • I wonder how the woman accusing you of “being paranoid” would’ve reacted if you took out your cellphone and took a picture of the page
        or
if you’d asked to see where she’d written her name down on the page with her address and her phone number?

I suspect that she’d have done a bobblehead Jacinda wafflestop and gotten angry.

People are completely OK with other people’s privacy being breached and taking zero responsibility for it – but they stop short straight away when it comes to doing the same to their own.

  6. James Delingpole writes a great piece about the UK media and its downfall. You could easily substitute NZ names in the piece and it would still be the same. It is why Stuff was not a good deal at $1 + debt etc. !!

    https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2020/05/26/the-mainstream-media-are-bought-paid-for-and-doomed/

“The British MSM’s relentless propagandising on behalf to the official government line initially puzzled me. Normally, after all, as happened with Brexit, you might have expected a range of views — some newspapers pro-, some anti-. So why the unanimity on coronavirus?

Part of the answer can be found in this government strategy document from March 22nd. It was put together by the behaviour experts who advise the government on how to nudge the public in a particular direction.

Perceived threat: A substantial number of people still do not feel sufficiently personally threatened; it could be that they are reassured by the low death rate in their demographic group (8), although levels of concern may be rising (9). Having a good understanding of the risk has been found to be positively associated with adoption of COVID-19 social distancing measures in Hong Kong (10). The perceived level of personal threat needs to be increased among those who are complacent, using hard-hitting emotional messaging. To be effective this must also empower people by making clear the actions they can take to reduce the threat.

But how could the government recruit Britain’s diverse and — hitherto — famously intractable media into pushing its propaganda message?

    Simple.

Here is a report from April 20th in the publishing trade press:

The UK government has aired a coronavirus public information campaign across print, TV, radio, digital and outdoor since March. The latest iteration of the campaign, which was created by the National Health Service’s ad agency MullenLowe, features frontline health workers and the tagline, “Stay home. Protect the NHS. Save lives.” Wavemaker is the media agency leading the push.

“We recognize the vital role that media organizations, including local newspapers, play in ensuring the provision of reliable, high-quality information during this time,” said a U.K. government spokeswoman. “We also understand the acute pressures newspapers are facing financially due to the steep drop in advertising revenues and the implications of the lockdown on print circulation.”

Total government spend? £35 million. “

I don’t think there are degrees of hatred, but definitly degrees of anger, and my anger is seething at the incompetence and stupidity of the government, and the idiots that are taken in by this. Would I shed a tear if every member of the LabourParty suddenly met an untimely demise? No. It would not bother me one jot.

    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2020/05/deputy-prime-minister-winston-peters-wants-covid-19-alert-level-1-now.html

“What’s the enemy we’ve got now? It’s not COVID-19,” Peters told Newstalk ZB. “It’s the inability to turn this economy around with the speed we should be doing and as fast as possible.”

He said Kiwis will have “concern about the state of their personal finances, about their family finances” and he said he’s worried about the “despair and hopelessness that comes when people cannot see a way out.”

“Hope is what we’ve got to make real in this country.”

He also rubbished the suggestion New Zealand should have an extra holiday to make up for the ones lost during the lockdown and to help stimulate local tourism.

“At this present time we’ve been in compulsory lockdown for far too long, people know that they want to be out there working… there’s only one way out of this: think smart and work harder,” Peters said.

“So, a day off when we’ve had weeks off is just not the right thing to be promoting as we speak.”

  11. Labour MP Peeni Henare blasts Todd Muller, Judith Collins for being ‘blind’ to Māori concerns
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2020/05/labour-mp-peeni-henare-blasts-todd-muller-judith-collins-for-being-blind-to-m-ori-concerns.html

Henare referred to National’s new leadership on Tuesday suggesting MP Paul Goldsmith is Māori in defence of a lack of diversity in the party’s front bench – even though Goldsmith is not Māori.

Henare, MP for Tāmaki Makaurau, also called out Collins, a senior National MP, for saying during a select committee on Wednesday that she was tired of being demonised for her culture.

Henare then blasted Collins for her response during a session of the Finance and Expenditure Committee, in which Labour MP Tāmati Coffey highlighted a lack of Treaty of Waitangi recognition in a document being discussed.

Collins could be heard protesting in the background, saying: “Stupid questions.”

The committee chairperson, Labour MP Deborah Russell, could be heard describing Collins’ interjection as “quite a white girl comment”.

Collins then shot back, describing herself as “someone who’s greatly sick of being demonised for my ethnicity, thank you very much”.

ACT leader David Seymour could be heard describing Dr Russell’s comment to Collins as “unbelievably racist”.

In his speech, Henare suggested Collins does not know what it is like to be marginalised.

“When Ms Collins is more likely to live in poverty, to end up in prison, to be stopped to have her bags checked in a shop even though your Pākehā mates are not, then, maybe she can claim to be demonised for her culture.”

He said Collins, “like her leader, are blind to the real Aotearoa the rest of us live in”.

  13. National sets up ‘intelligence unit’ to dig up info on political opponents during 2020 election campaign
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2020/05/national-sets-up-intelligence-unit-to-dig-up-info-on-political-opponents-during-2020-election-campaign.html

Newshub asked Brownlee on Wednesday to explain the “intelligence and espionage unit” he’s setting up and he insisted those words do not describe it.

Asked if it’s about digging dirt on opponents, he said: “No, it most definitely is not my style. We have no interest in that.”

Brownlee says his comments have been deliberately misconstrued by bitter backers of former National leader Simon Bridges.

“It’s very common to have the opportunity and a requirement, actually, to get a sense of what the opposition is doing,” he said.

But apparently that’s not a requirement for the Labour Party. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is promising no opposition research.

“Nope, I did not do it in the last election; we will not do it in this election,” she said.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says he’s not worried about National trying to dig dirt on his party because there is “no dirt on New Zealand First for anyone to dig”.

    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2020/05/opinion-dear-todd-the-honeymoon-is-over-welcome-to-political-leadership-in-new-zealand.html

You were challenged on a topic that was in the news yesterday – the lack of Maori politicians in your shadow cabinet, yet you still didn’t seem able to answer the questions with any authority.

Instead you fumbled through a response about putting Paula Bennett and Dr Shane Reti up against Willie Jackson, to which Bridge rightfully rolled his eyes.

But it was mischief-making by the media to suggest you agreed with those views and the hat was anything more than just a souvenir you bought in 2016.

It is a distraction and by giving the media a whiff of weakness they jumped on it.

I don’t often find myself agreeing with Mark Richardson, but he was spot on when he said on The AM Show you should have shut these stories down.

“He [Muller] should not have buckled on the Trump hat. He should have said, ‘that is a ridiculous argument, I don’t want to hear it again'”, Richardson said in a heartfelt speech afterwards.

  19. A Left Footer And A Left Winger

Simon Bridges may have been many things, but he was certainly to the right-ish side of the Nats. We don’t know how Muller will go, but we wish him all the best. What we do know is that his leadership means the Nats are moving left. He is even flirting with the Greens and New Zealand First. Before Nikki Kaye, Auckland Central was Labour for nearly a century except for three years voting Alliance (when the Labour candidate was thought too right-wing). Nikki winning the seat of Labour and keeping it off Jacinda Ardern tells us of her tenacity, but also that she is no Attila the Hun.

    Complementary

If anything, the Nats’ tack left makes ACT and National complementary. We are already hearing from Nat supporters saying they need ACT to put the right in centre-right. Even National’s MPs are rumbling. We note Tamaki MP Simon O’Connor rebelling against Muller already saying: ‘there are already two left wing parties and we don’t need a third.’ We knew O’Connor couldn’t count, but not that he was right-wing. Regardless, there is now a complementary pair of parties.

President Trump Just Signed Two Important Executive Orders And The Media Is SILENT About Them

On Wednesday President Trump signed a pair of executive orders designed to prevent authoritarian careerists nestled deep inside the federal bureaucracy from running agencies like their own personal fiefdoms.

In particular, Government Executive reported the president “signed two executive orders to restrict federal agencies from issuing certain new rules without going through the normal regulatory process, saying the changes would rein in ‘unaccountable bureaucrats’ who are imposing their ‘private agenda’ on Americans.”
