ive had north island folk stay before and tell us they know what frost is only to go outside next morning and claim its snowed overnight when it is infact just a frost.
in the shaded areas here it hasnt defrosted for few days now. -4 – 6 the past 3 mornings but cracker days follow so its algood but this mornings job lineup at work is cleaning out 16 water troughs so fingers crossed the vac tank is working!

I tend to agree with you on Iraq, Afghanistan etc US intervention has if anything made it worse. Not that I am advocating for the US should get involved in Iran but there seems to be an appetite to get rid of the mullahs. There has been a couple of failed attempts already. A regime change in Iran would likely be positive imo. The most likely route of achieving this would seem to be a military coup.

Since the asphalt is permeable that ‘somewhere’ can be lateral. The water can be directed into drains with normal camber.
What I find very vague is the claim ‘it can absorb four tons of rain a minute’. Apart from the fact that liquid is usually measured in litres the omission of an area that can cope with that 4000 litres makes the claim meaningless.

Agree. The average office dwelling townie looks at tar seal roads as they do a concrete path. Without well designed drainage ordinary chipseal lets so much water through that it eventually disintegrates. Many of the current problems with the country’s roads started with the total neglect of maintenance of water tables in favour of “safety” barriers & speed humps during the dark years of the Labour government.
Many of the potholes are from overweight truck drivers, didn’t ya know?
One of the reasons we get the potholes we do is that many of our roads were built to cope with 30 ton trucks and small trailers. These big fellas create more compression waves, which if the underlying surface is weak then that begins a pothole. The underside in many areas around NZ is weak and is also prone to water rising rather than draining away. Rotten rock and Grey wackie or dirt and stones.
Truck weight is certainly a factor but:
a) The government owns the roads.
b) The government sets weight limits after receiving ‘expert’ advice
c) The government enforces these limits….draconically.
Anecdotally, going back to when I was a driver forty odd years ago, my Ford 2418 had a GVM of 22 ton & a GCM of 32 ton. That weight was distributed over three axles on the truck & two on the trailer. A similar stock transporter today would have a GCM of 44 ton spread over eight or nine axles.
Ergo, the average weight per axle which is what causes the roads to pack up is lower today than in the 1980s.
With roading the base is definitely a factor but a well drained road (or even a forestry track) where water is carried away in clear gutters & pipes will outlast any where water flows across the road or worse ponds.
All overweight truck drivers are to go on an enforced diet, with their weight to be monitored by the god sqaud with special red logbooks.

Or no leasing of vehicles, but we shouldn’t forget the reason the tax was brought in in the first place. Because high flyers were buying high-value cars, driving them to the parking lot for the day or buying them and garaging them to claim the depreciation and yet in neither case were they used to earn an income that was taxable.
