  2. Tiwai Point smelter closure: Mataura locals unnerved on waste removal
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/money/2020/07/tiwai-point-smelter-closure-mataura-locals-unnerved-on-waste-removal.html

“Be responsible,” she said. “Don’t just pack up and run, put on your big boy pants and clean up your mess you’ve left.”

Like many in Mataura she was worried about what it meant for the more than 8500 tonnes of ouvea premix – a waste byproduct of aluminium production – stored in the town.

“There’s a lot of angry people here in Mataura,” she said.

“Every time it rains now we think ‘Is there going to be another flood and what impact is that going to have on our community?’ We all had to pack up and leave town at our own expense last time and that’s going to happen again.

When wet, the ouvea premix releases ammonia gas, which is toxic to humans.

    • That’s going to be an awkward one. Rio Tinto had been stockpiling the waste for years & got rid of it by selling the lot to Taha Asia Pacific a company that stated its intention was to use the product in some manufacturing process. The whole thing was dodgy & the Bahrain owned company was liquidated in 2016 after moving the waste to Mataura. So now we’re left with:

      # A town sitting on a time bomb of 10,000 tons of aluminium waste. (stored next to the river)

      # Rio Tinto have wiped their hands of the problem. (it no longer belongs to them)

      # The company responsible for the problem no longer exists.

      # Gore District Council have shown normal local body incompetency by failing to force the issue of resource consent at the time. (they subsequently applied & were awarded a bond which was never paid)

I guess that as usual the Government on behalf of the long pocketed taxpayer will pick up the bill.

“no consultation with hunting or outdoor organisations”

DoC also blames hunters for letting the population get out of control.

“If a hunter isn’t able to maintain the population within these maximum levels then there is a role required by DoC,” Crown council David Laurenson QC told the High Court this week.

Now DoC has announced it wants the numbers brought down and plans to kill 25,000 tahr. But that has left the Tahr Foundation fuming. They say DoC have their numbers wrong and they want the cull called off.

“The reason why a lot of the hunting community is getting a little bit upset about the way this has gone about is because the tahr control plan was released close to midnight and then put in action a couple of days later with no consultation with any of the hunting or outdoor organisations, ” tahr hunter Laura Douglas told The Project.

Hunters are also at odds with DoC over how large the tahr population should be allowed to grow.

        • Thar eat a few weeds that quickly grow back.

All that’s needed is for hunters to stop the snobbish trophy culture and have a few bomb ups. Thar are good eating too.

I’m guilty of it too. I’ve managed to get in the middle of a mobs and sit in plain sight. They made silly noises and stared at me, but didn’t run. Would have felt mean shooting them.

          • Exactly. I went Tahr hunting only once near Wataroa. When I saw these magnificent animals in their wild habitat I just watched them for hours and could not bring myself to pull the trigger. New Zealand is incredibly fortunate to have a healthy, thriving population of these beautiful mountain goats that are all but extinct in their natural range in the Himalayas and exist nowhere else the small South African population having been slaughtered in recent years.
They are welcome to as many weeds as they like and are, in my view, of infinitely more value than a few scrubby native plants and the thought of DoC shooting them from helicopters with shotguns leaving many injured to die a lingering death and wasting all that good tasting meat is absolutely repugnant to me and many others.

              • Like you have had a lot to do with hunting of a number of NZ species.Have lived with a number of our wild species.
One thing I do know is game animals need to managed ,as they are in the rest of the world.
Only need to look at where we would be if rabbits, possums wallaby’s goats pigs etc in particular were not controlled.
Game animals are a resource ,but too many are detrimental to NZ.
The numbers need to be managed.
Then the question arises who by?
As a suggestion there needs to be an independent knowledgeable group of people with representation from all stakeholders, (not just DOC )set up to manage rather than advise wild animals control.

In passing it is noted that in some areas red deer are reaching pest proportions

But… If you want a trophy bull it’s much harder. And in winter it’s no joke where they live.

  3. New Zealand fishing crew guilty of violent assault in Falkland Islands pub
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/07/new-zealand-fishing-crew-guilty-of-violent-assault-in-falkland-islands-pub.html

Three New Zealanders have pleaded guilty to violent disorder charges after attacking patrons at a pub on the Falkland Islands.

They were part of a Sanford crew fishing on the San Aspiring in the South Atlantic Ocean since February, and were due to be repatriated when the assaults occurred.

The court was told the men – Sonny Ball, Samuel Goldsworthy, and Chassy Duncan – indiscriminately assaulted a group of customers in a bar after they were refused service because the premises was closed for the night.

Penguin News deputy editor Roddy Cordeiro was in court and said five patrons were hospitalised, including one with a broken wrist, after the violent assaults.

The trio were denied bail because of the unprovoked nature of the attack and will be sentenced later this month.

They face up to two years in prison.

  4. Seems the lockdowns and other draconian measures, taken by the left, have failed to stop Covid.

    Told ya so months ago.

So let’s see what we have achieved:

    1. Covid alive and well and spreading.

    2. Devastated economy .

    3. Civil unrest around the world with hundreds of deaths.

    4. Countless preventable deaths from lack of medical care, due to lockdowns.

The list goes on. Lockdowners are evil stupid people.

    • Cases in Tokyo are up again, but the number of tests was also increased. I wonder what flavour of coronavirus they are finding. I hope it’s not the GH strain that is popping up in South Korea at the moment.

      8

      0

      • The vast majority of deaths, attributed to Covid, were of people never tested for it. They are including the hundreds of thousands of regular flu and respiratory infections.

As for strains, well of course they will develop, just as other flus do. That is why flu vaccines are not very effective and don’t stop flu. Only imbeciles think a vaccine will save us from this new strain.

There is nothing mysterious, or deadly, about Covid. It’s all rather ordinary. Only difference is no other flu has been studied so intently, or been used so politicaly.

        11

        0

        • In the 6:00 a.m. NHK news in Tokyo, it was revealed that 243 new cases of Covid-19 were detected yesterday in Tokyo (not Japan as a whole) (the highest since early April) but also adds the crucial fact that testing has been stepped up. This would suggest that if you test more, you will uncover more cases.

What authorities should do is plot the number of tests performed together with the number of cases uncovered. I am not seeing this disclosure. People of a sheep-like pursuasion could easily be manupulated by headlines screaming “huge rise in Coid-19 cases” (even if this is the result of a big boost in testing).

Where is the watchdog body overseeing whether politicians are throttling up or throttling down the testing regime, to produce the outcomes they want, for the purpose of manipulating public opinion?

          8

          0

        • They should stop all this testing it is causing nothing but trouble. The virus is now well established nearly everywhere and is obviously no where near as deadly as the power grabbers would like us to believe. The cure on the other hand is proving, as many expected it would, to be far, far more deadly than the disease.

          7

    • The Planned-emic, it’s worse than that

If the end goal is interference in the 2020 election, then everything we’ve been observing falls into place.

      1) Why was Cindy so slow off the mark closing our borders?
Sure – part of it was her incredible vanity and wanting to do a re-run of the ‘rag-on-head’ frowny face Mother Theresa act with the muslim community on 15 March. But that was only part of the reason. The real reason was – obviously – that NZ as a remote island nation, with a small population was going to be terribly difficult to seed Corona virus (ie the Common Cold) in sufficiently well to ensure it is embedded within the community.
      2) Why no quarantine until immense public and pressure was applied
Because NZ is a remote island nation, with a small population was going to be terribly difficult to seed Corona virus (ie the Common Cold) in sufficiently well to ensure it is embedded within the community. Delaying quarantine on new arrivals maximised the spread (from a very small base) within the community and it meant there were no records of potential carriers to back-track to limit the damage.
      3. Why was the OBVIOUSLY unreliable mechanism of “self-isolation” used as the control mechanism until there was huge public embarrassment about how it was being ignored
Because NZ as a remote island nation, with a small population wasn’t showing the high case numbers that were needed to create the panic necessary and so self-isolation allowed further spread within the wider community.
      4. Why was the testing regime so unbelievably slow to get off the ground and at such low numbers and so many lies told about it?
Because testing of new arrivals and their close contacts would have shown that they were about the only carriers of Covid into the wider NZ population and there would have been such public outcry that the plan to more widely spread Covid within the community would have been made less effective. No testing means no evidence the danger was at the border, no evidence meant the negligent lack of control could continue.
5, Why were people allowed to leave quarantine on compassionate grounds, without testing and why was it covered up?
Because it was clear that Covid wasn’t spreading through the community as fast as is going to be needed to maintain or return to a state of lockdown and so it was just another way of allowing plague carrying vectors to move freely within the largely unaffected wider community.
      6. Why were BLM protests allowed when the whole of the rest of the community was under threat of police action for breaking social distancing guidelines
Because it was clear that Covid wasn’t spreading fast enough around NZ and this was a panic measure to create further spread and the lies about “no danger” and “no need for protesters to go into managed isolation” were to ensure there was Covid transmission and that the new plague vectors were was allowed to move freely about the community to spread the infection around.
7). Why did NZ spend so long in lockdown when there were next to no cases?
Because lockdown just flattens the curve – it slows down the speed of transmission – it just delays the point at which the uninfected get infected. You get maximum effect from the infirm catching a cold in Winter – the outbreak happened in NZ Summer. If there are enough carriers in the community when Winter starts, then you can spin up the usual cold and ‘flu season deaths as being Covid-deaths and then you can start the panic again and you can get into lockdown ready for the September election at the tail end of the bad weather.
8). Wasn’t it amazing earlier this year when Cindy announced an early election, several months before the deadline?
Traditionally, winter elections (like in September) tend to favour National as National voters are more inclined to get off their arse and vote unlike the indigent Labour voter who struggles to get out of bed in the morning. Traditionally, it’s been better for Labour to go for Spring election dates so that there is a chance of better weather. Similarly so for NZF voters – if the weather is horrible – the oldies are a little bit less likely to get out and vote. But all of a sudden Cindy is in favour of a winter election! It’s almost as if it was all part of a big world wide plan?

There will be much excitement in evil quarters about ultra-far left wing Victoria going into lockdown again – it sets a precedent that you can have your freedom and then you can have it taken away again.

If it was announced in November 2019 that you were going to have the tried and tested, heavily audited physical voting Gemeral Election regime removed and replaced with a postal voting system – there would have been widespread revolt about it.

If postal voting is announced in August when NZ has returned to lockdown (Fur ihre Sicherheit) – will there be such an outcry?

Two were discussing the Bullshit of the lockdown and all the false statistics.
i joined in as did couple of others.

Turned out of the eight, six (incl myself) were onto the bullshit and lies.
The other two then started asking questions.
Basically they had not bothered to research but were not sold on the ‘official line’

The WHO, The NZ Ministry of health and the media were trashed in the discussion.
This was Mt Roskill so heartland Liebour.

i took this as a good sign that there is a silent majority out there who realise the whole Covid story is massive manipulation.

How great if you are the Govt of Country X [insert name] and have a great excuse to lock up everyone in your home- you know…for your own safety!!
More than half the worlds population endured home detention without solving the ‘problem’ at all.
This is a massive power play and it has fuck all to with a medical virus.

I suppose that if favoring small government, common sense, logic, the fact that 2 + 2 = 4, fiscal responsibility, personal responsibility, and the rule of common law makes you “right wing,” then we are “right wing.”

What do most people in New Zealand think of when the phrase “right-wing” is used to describe someone? I know the connotation is negative.
If you surveyed the media and counted the frequency of terms “right-wing” and “left-wing” I am sure that the former would outnumber the latter by a factor of at least 10 to 1. This is strange in a nation that polls as Labour majority. One would expect the ratio of “right-wing” and “left-wing” to be about 50:50.

On the other hand, a “left-wing” media will see “right-wing” everywhere (under the bed, too).

The U.S. Roman Catholic Church used a special and unprecedented exemption from federal rules to amass at least $1.4 billion in taxpayer-backed coronavirus aid, with many millions going to dioceses that have paid huge settlements or sought bankruptcy protection because of clergy sexual abuse cover-ups.

The church’s haul may have reached – or even exceeded – $3.5 billion, making a global religious institution with more than a billion followers among the biggest winners in the U.S. government’s pandemic relief efforts, an Associated Press analysis of federal data released this week found.

    • Worth looking at a bit of the background that David Seymour should have stressed.

Most people’s opinion of gangs is formed by watching smelly, fat, belligerent yobs on Harleys acting like schoolyard bullies. The rank & file alternate their time between gaol & violent street crime financed by the proceeds of drug sales.

But those are only the foot troops. The real power & the real money is held by their leaders who work as eg lawyers, accountants; running legitimate businesses as fronts & money laundries. They wear suits, live in leafy suburbs & send their kids to the right schools.

Break them & you’ll break the gangs they run.

Bill Clinton gave backing to a convicted terrorist that is behind Thousand Currents and BLM Black Lives Matter when granting a commuted sentence, on his last day in 2001.

Now she has raised her head and morphed into major fundraising systems for BLM.

  18. What was it like to do 100km/h down the motorway, Dad?

It’s so long ago I can hardly remember, son.

    Must have been awesome.

Yes, I suppose it was. The car made it to top gear every trip. A bit different to now.

    What was top gear like?
    Fast, son. Quiet. Smooth.
Wow. You must have got to places pretty quick before the 50k limit came in. .
    We did.

We were very lucky. They were good times. We had beautiful big cars. Did granddad tell you about the old days with V8s and V12s and SUVs?

  19. Rokzfast reports:

Black Lives Matter-inspired demonstrations against symbols of history, in New Zealand and around the world, have focused on monuments to Europeans, but Ngāpuhi leader David Rankin has called on Tainui to take down Turangawaewae Marae, which he said his iwi had long regarded as a symbol of enslavement and oppression.

The marae, he said, represented a dark period in the iwi’s history, when Tainui slavers abused his people to build their marae and grow crops for them.

“For us in the North, Turangawaewae Marae is a symbol of that slavery, murder and cannibalism, and so needs to be pulled down,” he said.

“The wealth that Tainui generated was made on the backs of Ngāpuhi slaves.”

He had the support of his Te Matarahurahu hapū, whose ancestors were among those captured by Tainui, and used as slaves. Sometimes slaves had become part of the communities of their captors, but in this case they were eventually killed and eaten.

“Tainui famously acquired corn by disembowelling my ancestor and removing the kernels in his stomach for seed,” he said.

“Tainui has a moral obligation to pull down that marae, which for us is a symbol of cultural hatred, and if they don’t pull it down, then we will come down and do the job for them.”

Several Ngāpuhi hapū were preparing a submission to the Hamilton City Council to request the marae be dismantled.

This is I guess where you end up once you start pulling down structures that cause some people distress.

So this guy swallowed seed corn without chewing?! I find that hard to believe.

Given the oral history and how it can be embelished over time, coupled with the nurturing of inter-clan grudges, I have no doubt that any move towards a Maori nation would be stillborn as old hatreds and animosities were revived.

    • …. oral history and how it can be embellished over time …
      … nurturing of inter-clan grudges, …

A good orator brings all this up from the dark to emerge into the light.
So that “feelz” can be developed and deep emotions also emerge.
So very easy to manipulate and be subjective and so develop its own narrative.

New Zealand to quarantine people ‘for months, maybe years’ as COVID-19 rages around world – epidemiologist Michael Baker
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/07/new-zealand-to-quarantine-people-for-months-maybe-years-as-covid-19-rages-around-world-epidemiologist-michael-baker.html

“Mistakes happen, and we have to learn from them and improve our systems so we don’t repeat those errors,” he tells host Simon Shepherd.

“We’re going to have thousands of people sitting in these facilities, quarantined in isolation facilities for months, maybe years ahead.

“Sensible risk management says when a mistake happens you figure out what went wrong, and you improve the system.”

Prof Baker agrees, warning the pandemic is “just getting started” and we can’t afford to be complacent.

“This virus has the potential to infect half the world’s population or more over the next one to two years. So that’s billions of people, maybe four billion people,” he tells Shepherd.

  25. Brian Tamaki claims Government wants to kill babies, bring about Marxism at Auckland CBD protest ride
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2020/07/brain-tamaki-claims-government-wants-to-kill-babies-bring-about-marxism-at-auckland-cbd-protest-ride.html

Church leader Brian Tamaki and the Tu Tangata Riders started their convoy in the south Auckland suburb of Manukau and travelled along the Southern Motorway, blocking it as they did so.

The motorcycle group then rode through Auckland’s CBD and joined the ‘let’s get NZ back’ march up Queen Street to Aotea Square.

“Bishop Tamaki is making a stand! He wants change in this Government, he is tired of our freedoms and rights being violated by this present Government and taken from us!” a Destiny Church spokesperson said in a statement.

“He wants to protect the Kiwi way of life!”

“We can not stay silent any longer, it’s time for our voices to be heard,” he said. “Politicians no longer represent the people. They are self-serving and represent themselves.”

Tamaki accused politicians of introducing extreme left-wing view and abortion legislation.

“They start to bring a strange type of ideology like socialism, Marxism, communism, all these other ‘isms’,” he said.

  26. Beware of billionaire do-gooders as their vision is ‘fundamentally incompatible with democracy’ – Anand Giridharadas
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/world/2020/07/beware-of-billionaire-do-gooders-as-their-vision-is-fundamentally-incompatible-with-democracy-anand-giridharadas.html

He questions how and why we have become reliant on the philanthropy of the super-rich to help solve our biggest global issues, and their role in eroding the public institutions that should be leading the way.

Giridharadas is an editor-at-large for TIME and was a foreign correspondent and columnist for the New York Times from 2005 to 2016. His two previous books are India Calling: An Intimate Portrait of a Nation’s Remaking and The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas.

He told RNZ he once rubbed shoulders with the elite at Aspen Institute but had a revelation when seminar rooms there were named after some of the “worst actors in American and global life, David Koch for example and others”.

“We were discussing how to make the world better. And it occurred to me that some of these very people in the room had flown into Aspen from their jobs making the world worse.

“They worked for some of the Silicon Valley tech companies putting our democracy at risk, monopolising the economy and political power, they worked for food companies … lobbying against nutrition wavering, they worked for employers that fought against … raising minimum wages. And then they would fly to Aspen to talk about solving problems they were causing.”

Trump commutes prison sentence for former campaign adviser Roger Stone

US President Donald Trump commuted the sentence of his longtime political confidant Roger Stone on today, just days before he was set to report to prison. The move, short of a full pardon, is sure to alarm critics who have long railed against the president’s repeated interventions in the nation’s justice system.
    https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/world/trump-commutes-prison-sentence-former-campaign-adviser-roger-stone

Stone had been sentenced in February to three years and four months in prison for lying to Congress, witness tampering and obstructing the House investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election. He was set to report to prison by Wednesday.

Stone told The Associated Press that Trump had called him earlier today to inform him of the commutation. Stone was celebrating in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with conservative friends and said he had to change rooms because there were “too many people opening bottles of Champagne here.”

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany called Stone a “victim of the Russia Hoax that the Left and its allies in the media.”

“Not only was Mr. Stone charged by overzealous prosecutors pursing a case that never should have existed, and arrested in an operation that never should have been approved, but there were also serious questions about the jury in the case,” she said in a statement.

A commutation does not erase Stone’s felony convictions in the same way a pardon would, but it would protect him from serving prison time as a result.

  29. A lawyer dies in a car accident on his 40th birthday & finds himself at the Pearly Gates. A brass band is playing, the angels are singing a beautiful hymn, there is a huge crowd cheering & shouting his name & absolutely everyone wants to shake his hand.

Just when he thinks things can’t possibly get any better, Saint Peter himself runs over, apologises for not greeting him personally at the Pearly Gates, shakes his hand & says, “Congratulations son, we’ve been waiting a long time for you”.

Totally confused & a little embarrassed, the lawyer sheepishly looks at Saint Peter & says “Saint Peter, I tried to lead a God-fearing life, I loved my family, I tried to obey the Ten Commandments but congratulations for what? I honestly don’t remember doing anything really special when I was alive”.

“Congratulations for what?” says Saint Peter, totally amazed at the man’s modesty. “We’re celebrating the fact that you lived to be 160 years old! God himself wants to see you!

“The lawyer is awestruck & can only look at Saint Peter with his mouth wide open. When he regains his power of speech, he looks up at Saint Peter & says “Saint Peter, I lived my life in the eternal hope that when I died I would be judged by God & be found to be worthy… but I only lived to be forty”.

“That’s simply impossible son” says Saint Peter. “We’ve added up your billing hours”.

  30. Team NZ renting Viaduct headquarters for $1 a year resulting in $13 million council revenue loss

Team New Zealand is paying $1 a year to rent the Viaduct Events Centre as its headquarters for next year’s America’s Cup, resulting in $13 million of lost revenue for Auckland Council.
    https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/team-nz-renting-viaduct-headquarters-1-year-resulting-in-13-million-council-revenue-loss

He said using the Viaduct Events Centre was a way of using existing infrastructure to reduce costs and limit imposing more buildings on the harbour’s edge.

Team NZ set up their base at the Viaduct Events Centre in 2018, with the first three years provided at nominal rent. If Team NZ continue to occupy the centre after the regatta next March, the lease agreement requires them to pay market rent.

RFA is now working with Team NZ to find a suitable new base for it to move to after the America’s Cup.

  31. Love this comment from the sorry story of the left eating it self,
It is my bold emphasis. 🙂 🙂 🙂

    Nurse Ratchet.
I am opening my first business venture in August 1. I am 56 years old. Opening a business during this time of plandemic has been nothing short of a nightmare. Yet, I persisted and I will be successful.
    .
I voted Trump and will do so again. All my friends – who are themselves business owners who have supported my upstart business – voted Trump and will do so again.
    .
What these idiots don’t realize is that we don’t care that they complain and boycott.
    .
What these idiots don’t realize is we have already cancelled and boycotted them.
    .
Some of the best early advice shared with me was to buy a sign – “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone” – and to keep a gun behind the counter. Done and done.
    .
I don’t want these idiots’ business. I will kick them out of my new store if they even show one ounce of libtard. They will never be part of my model for success because they can never contribute to anything of value.
