  1. History books typically depict Vikings as blue-eyed, blonde-haired, burly men sailing the North Atlantic coast to pillage wherever they set foot on land. While some of that may be true, a new genetic study of Viking DNA is flipping much of this history on its head.

In the largest genetic study of Viking DNA ever, scientists have found that Vikings — and their diaspora — are actually much more genetically diverse than we may have thought and were not necessarily all part of a homogenous background.

We should look at Maori in the same way.

    • This is true.
I have seen blonde, blue-eyed Maoris. (Correction: “People self-identifying as Maori.”)

Who would have self-identified as “Viking” back in the day?

      • Viking was a ‘trade’, so yes. It surprises me not that people outside Scandinavia who wanted to do a spot of pillaging and raping would join on a Viking venture.

  2. For too long now, a succession of Labour and National governments have hidden behind our pay-as-you-go system of providing welfare benefits. Leaders like Helen Clark, John Key, Bill English, and – more recently – Jacinda Ardern, have used it to avoid making the hard decisions demanded by New Zealand’s looming welfare crisis, secure in the knowledge that when that crisis hits, it will be someone else’s problem.

Instead, they have merely tinkered with welfare policy at its edges, their focus not on New Zealand’s long-term future but rather on the short-term imperative (for them) of re-election. In the meantime, huge future costs are being incurred that will have to be carried by New Zealanders yet to be born.

    • Don’t you trust your gut wiseowl? If it doesn’t sound kosher, it probably is too good to be true. Your decision who you vote for. Me, I’ve already decided the best party to put the country back on track is Act.

      Party vote Act 2020 ☑️ ☑️

      • My gut is normally right! Not about who I am voting for.
It is MMP that frustrates me.And no I didn’t vote for MMP.

A person like Fiona McKenzie strikes me as someone who would normally stand for the likes of National. After watching her I thought what a waste as I think she would be preferable as an MP to many of the career MP’s we have now.

        • I share your frustration or in my case disdain for MMP. I didn’t vote for it either as it was always going to result in splitting the vote into too many voices resulting in problems such as the Greens.

Voting for small parties who will not succeed this election is tantamount to handing the country over to communism!!
It is not the election to be voting for tiny parties who have NO CHANCE!

For what it is worth I’m voting strategically to maximise the chances of the MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED.

          – Act get my party vote. ☑️
          – National party gets our local candidate vote. ☑️

          • wg, you are on to it. 🙂
If National electorate seat has a big majority, why not vote for the Act candidate.

A reduced National majority that can be figured to be an ACT reaction, will surely have some affect on that candidate, and to the Nat Party officials.
Though a small way, it may get the candidate think of getting National to work in more with ACT policies, and to reconsider if hampering ACT. 🙂

The Nat Party itself will get a real message also. 🙂

            0

            • The message National needs to get is to very quickly find a way to reduce the fear in all those supporters who went over to Labour. They are the voters who have given Labour their big boast in the polls.
The Greens have not lost many to Labour, the drop in NZF and the rise in ACT balance each other out (I’m not suggesting all ACT’s increased support comes from NZF, just that they numerically balance each other out)
So Judith has to grab / motivate as many undecided and somehow drag those “new” Labour supporters back.

      • WGirl,
It depends on how strong your local National candidate is, it is unlikely that a local ACT candidate will win a seat so strategically Party vote ACT, Electorate vote National will give the best result.

      • Think me a bastard, I don’t care.

But after first-hand experience of seeing the behaviour of the cops during these lockdowns which include abuse, intimidation, lying and corruption I AM DELIGHTED TO SEE A DEAD GESTAPO OFFICER.

And by the way I am going to the PEACEFUL and SOCIALLY DISTANCED protest in Aotea Square at 12:00 pm TODAY and will have to tolerate the nasty and arrogant behaviour of the NZ Pigs. So be it!

Should I apologise for loving FREEDOM more than a DEAD COP!!!

        • Agreed.
The Brit police have been total bastards in the last 20 years and in the last 3 years- beyond the pale
The evil Head of the Met is as political appointment as ever there has been.
A lesbian woman who is involved -openly- with a female inferior in the farce.
If a stale pale straight male did that there would be hell to pay.
This lesbian goes by the actual name of Cressida Dick.

Their behavior last year was the same soft glove result on extinction rebellion that the NZ cops showed.
When a Brit cops comes to NZ and joins up here that is another nail in the coffin.
The Brit cops treatment of ‘the masses’ under Covid has been bad – very 1930s – 1980s Teutonic – and will get worse with their 6 month lockdown.

The guy came from NZ but made his home in UK.
I do offer condolences to his family but not sympathy.
It sounds like a failure of procedure.
I guess there are some white women up north who were repeatedly gang raped by paki gangs that will not have any sympathy either.

If cops want support and sympathy it would be wise to operate ‘for the people’ and not for corrupt politicians.
          You reap what you sow.
After White Island in Dec 2019 the NZ cops have divested any right to expect support from the people they, in truth, oppose.
It is not a long walk from oppose to oppress.

    • New Zealand has developed a budget based on “well-being” metrics, rather than GDP, to align public spending with broader objectives,

Those new “well being” measures are all in alignment of Agenda 21/30 as espoused by Ardern last year.
As for CCP virus “well being” of lock-downs, to carry that “fear bogey” into applying that for ‘climate change’ to continue the total control of the citizen.

As one of the tools was invoking “emergency powers”, so the bureaucrats want this to continue.

  8. A priest, a pastor and a rabbi are standing by a sharp turn in a road. They’re holding up a sign that says “The end is near! Turn back before it’s too late!”
Well, along comes a redneck, who’s driving his jacked-up pickup truck and loudly guzzling a beer. He screeches to a halt, surveys the three men of the cloth, and guffaws loudly.
“Haw! Ya relijus nuts!” he yells drunkenly, before spitting beer all over the pastor and screeching off.
There’s a pause, while the pastor and rabbi look at each other and the priest groans.
Suddenly, from around the corner, they hear a loud SCREEEEEEEEECH!!!! followed by a huge SPLASH.
The rabbi slowly turns to the other two, and sighs.
“Y’know, that’s the third one today.”
The priest sadly shakes his head.
“Maybe we should just change our sign to say “Bridge out” instead!”

NZ Election 2020: Could Sir John Key save National from Jacinda Ardern?
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2020/09/nz-election-2020-could-sir-john-key-save-national-from-jacinda-ardern.html

“There is always going to be risk for Key in attacking Jacinda Ardern, as she is extremely popular, and this might have a negative impact on Key’s own reputation,” Victoria University political analyst and researcher Dr Bryce Edwards tells Newshub.

“Similarly, in associating himself with National at the moment, he risks tarnishing his own brand, as National is clearly not very popular. And if he’s hoping to help National out in their campaign then he’s really taking on a very difficult task at the moment, as they are polling lower than in any time since before he took over the leadership himself.”

National is seriously down in the polls compared to Labour. Current National leader Judith Collins knows what’s at stake this election, telling one supporter on Wednesday this is her “one chance” at becoming Prime Minister.

She may need all the help she can get from her former leader. But does she want it – and would he give it to her?

“But he doesn’t seem to be particularly involved in the party, nor is he close to those in the leadership. His relationship with Judith Collins has been frosty for many years.”

‘Cruelty and inhumane’: Tenants’ anger as rent freeze ends, landlords look to recoup
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2020/09/cruelty-and-inhumane-tenants-anger-as-rent-freeze-ends-landlords-look-to-recoup.html

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the Government anticipated rent increases once the freeze ended, which was why the Residential Tenancies Act was updated under urgency to limit rental increases to once every 12 months.

While she would not comment on the group’s specific demands, she said the Government made the changes with tenants in mind.

“If they do see an increase, that will be the only increase over their tenancy that can happen in a 12-month period, and I think that’s really important.”

    7

    • So who in the Labour Coalition promoted no Zero rate rises by local councils?
So to allow “cruel & inhumane” relentless increase of rates.
That has to be paid by landlords!

Twyford told the civic leaders public investment is needed to give the private sector confidence and hope. If councils were to reduce their rates bill, that would “make matters worse”.
      https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/121250993/coronavirus-councils-warned-not-to-cut-rates-to-ease-covid19-pain

Insurance Premiums do not stay down either.

Increased landlord responsibilities, means increased costs for maintaining insulation levels, maintaining extractor fans, maintaining heat pumps etc.. and just the cost of maintenance, paint, safety & health requirements like scaffolding, then looking ahead, to be sure of disabled access, etc.. and these considerations have to be paid for by land-lords.

So it is advisable, experiencing these costs, plus looking ahead, rent rises are inevitable in many situations.

      -Rent freeze
      -Borrow and hope
      -reducing personal choice and freedom
-more government (under the current regime Govt jobs are held intact while the private sector gets thrown to the dogs; so on that alone – in relative terms – Govt is a bigger piece of the pie)
      – ‘shovel ready ‘ is just newspeak for ‘think big’

the more things change the more they stay the same.

    • There is an argument to be made that enhanced Anatarctic sea ice formation because of general reduced solar radiation increases dense saline sinking of very cold water (Antarcti Deep Water) which then pushes northwards until it reaches areas where North Atlantic Deep Water Formation is ocurring, but physically blocks the sinking of this water resulting in a slow down of the ocean conveyor belt and cooling in tthe NH hemisphere because of this. You dont need spurious melting of terrestrial Antarctic land ice to cause this. This has been known since the 1980s.

  11. Inclusiveness being well practiced in meritless diversity, with no vetting or even a Victorian company.
It just had to be “diversity” to comply to be the security company to run the quarantine system in Victoria.

This comes from a forum, and I figure was poached and assembled from papers behind paywalls.

History of Unified Security, company caught up in Melbourne hotel quarantine bungle
    July 29, 2020 4:01pm
Unified Security — one of the guard companies at the centre of the coronavirus hotel debacle in Victoria — has twice been in administration and once sold all its assets back to itself, including four Glock pistols.

When Luigi Trunzo’s Unified Security emerged from administration the first time, it sold all its assets — including four Glock pistols — to itself for $20,000.

The second time it came back from the brink, unsecured creditors owed $1.4 million got just 3.7 cents in the dollar.
On its website, Unified describes itself as “wholly Australian and Indigenous-owned.”
Mr Trunzo was born in NSW. His parents are from Italy.

The company is however certified as Indigenous-owned through the heritage of 51 per cent shareholder David Millward, who trained rugby league bad boy John Hopoate to the Australian heavyweight boxing title.
That certification requires at least half of a business to be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander owned.

Mr Trunzo, who drives a Lamborghini and lives in what may be the most expensive house in Earlwood, is not currently a director of Unified Security.
But he was between 1997 and 2005 and again from 2007 to 2015.

A 2002 deed of company arrangement executed while Unified Security Group Pty Limited was in administration saw it sell its assets to Unified Security Group (Aust) Pty Limited, including four Glock 9mm pistols and another gun, as well as computers, printers, a scanner, at least 12 armchairs, a TV, fridge, boardroom table, filing cabinets, safe, two-way radios and an alarm system.
The physical assets were sold to the new Unified company for $20,000.

That new Unified company called in administrators in 2008.
In 2012, that company’s administrator reported 12 unsecured creditors owed a total of $1.4 million would receive $51,000 between them. The largest creditor was the Australian Taxation Office, owed about $852,000.
Next was the NSW Office of State Revenue, whose debt was about $264,000.
The ATO was also a creditor in the 2002 restructuring, although the amount owed is unknown.

Unified was one of the companies that provided security at Carlton’s Rydges on Swanston, where many guards and their contacts were infected.
The NSW government has also hired the company to help guard a Sydney serviced apartment complex that is full of international arrivals.
Yesterday the company defended the performance of its guards, who earn as little as $19.84 an hour.

Also sounds like the contract was not even put out for tender.

Dan Andrews managed to push this one well under the bus, or is it the Melbourne Metro train? 🙂
Not sure if all the do not remember, no nothings, to the inquiry covered her ‘arse’ enough. 🙂
A day after her testimony to the $3 million Victorian government inquiry set up to investigate the ill-fated hotel quarantine program, evidence emerged throwing Ms Mikakos' sworn statement into doubt.
      .
extraordinary testimony to the inquiry on Friday, Mr Andrews squarely held his Health Minister accountable.
      .
In his statement tendered to the inquiry, the Premier said at the beginning of the hotels program, he regarded Ms Mikakos and Jobs Minister Martin Pakula as responsible for informing cabinet about “the initial overall service model and costings that had been determined for the program”.
      .
“I then regarded Minister Mikakos as accountable for the program,” his statement says.
      .
Neither the Premier nor any of his ministers or senior public servants were able to explain who made the decision to hire private security and knock back an offer of Australian Defence Force support to help with guarding returned travellers.

    • I cannot believe the incompetence of the Victorian Government and the media. Or maybe it is quite simply that they do not want acknowledge who was responsible for the decision to employ the private security guys.
All they have to do is go to the security firm and ask for a copy of the contract. Look at who signed for the Government and ask that person who gave them authority to sign the contract. If need be keep going up the chain of command. It cannot be too difficult.
If the security company will not give a copy then the media can ask for a copy under the freedom of information laws.

Italians back referendum to reduce size of Parliament by a third

The Italian people have voted to slash the size of their Parliament by a third, with voters turning out in big numbers despite the pandemic.

    Key points:
Italian Lower House MPs will be cut from 630 to 400 and senators from 315 to 200
The referendum was needed to approve the measures already passed by the Parliament
Italy recorded 1,350 new coronavirus infections on Monday and 17 COVID-19 deaths
With most of the vote counted, almost 63 per cent of Italians voted in favour of the reduction.

    • In 1999 New Zealanders voted to reduce our MPs in parliament from 120 to 99. The parliamentary lounge lizards ignored the voice of the people!

“A referendum on reducing the number of MPs from 120 to 99 was a citizens-initiated referendum held in New Zealand on 27 November 1999, the same date as the general election.[1] The proposal was supported by 81.5% of voters, with a turnout of 82.8%.[2] This referendum was non-binding and the number of MPs in parliament was not changed.” wiki

Dr Donnelly says the End of Life Choice Act is a “dangerous law” that will put the lives of 25,000 vulnerable people at risk, whilst Seymour says it will give people a choice to die with dignity, and there are numerous checks and balances to prevent it being abused.

    • It is excellent to see a politician who can hold up his end of a debate with facts and not obfuscate or back down when challenged. We have had years of weak or obsequious political debate. Great job David Seymour! 👏👏👏

  15. Of course that Doctor is influenced by her religion, I think all people who are religious would have that bias. People still die in dreadful pain and distress in hospices there are situations where the medical staff are unable to keep patients pain or stress free, people should have the right to decide for themselves. It should be a basic right.

    • Kea

One of the frustrations of the internet is locating an article, recalling parts of it but Google resists all attempts to relocate it.

About ten years ago I read a NZ item written by a woman whose mother had recently died of cancer in a hospice. The wretched woman had the misfortune to be allocated a Catholic doctor. During the last week of her life she was denied morphine up until the final hours & instead prescribed barbiturates which apparently destroyed recollection of the pain but not the pain itself.

The doctor should have been shot on sight.

  18. WG

I’ve been reading a PDF document https://dwdnsw.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/dying-badly-new-zealand-stories.pdf It was compiled by the End-of-Life Choice Society of New Zealand from submissions to the Health Select Committee. Extracts:

……” the doctor overseeing the patients had extremely conservative attitudes on pain relief and Joy was in constant agony. He’d visit once a day and until his word was given, dosage could not be increased. Angered by this, I cornered one of the nurses and demanded that she do something. She burst into tears. “My husband and I have a smallholding,” she said, “and if we allowed our animals to suffer as people suffer here we’d be sent to jail.””…… Page 20

……”The desperation in their eyes and the pleading for the staff to end their suffering was hideous to see and the prolonged grief of their families who just wanted their loved one to be free was something no one should have to go through.”….. Page 26

It would challenge me to describe the contempt I have for the religious scum who have orchestrated resistance to the Death with Dignity legislation. The hospice’s available in NZ & too many of the doctors who “care” for the inmates are largely hostage to the ideology of the churches.

If you have time to read it I would be interested in your conclusions.

  22. The immigration bullies are winding up.
One wonders how much we pay these wankers to represent our interests. They certainly have noe sense of application of common sense. Like the Mad Queen and herHealth bod they need to go.

Three German nationals detained in Bay of Islands after breaking Covid-19 border controls
The crew of a German yacht have been detained in the Bay of Islands after they broke New Zealand’s Covid-19 border restrictions.

Their 16-metre vessel, Anita, arrived in Opua yesterday afternoon despite being declined permission to enter the country by the Ministry of Health.

The three crew, all German nationals, have been refused entry and Immigration New Zealand was arranging for them to be flown home on the next available flight.

    Hmmm, Next available flight.
    Why when;
The Ministry of Health said the three crew had all returned negative Covid-19 tests and had been isolated on board their yacht for more than 14 days.

Elms said the crew had requested an exemption to the Covid-19 border restrictions but chose to travel before getting approval.

“The request for a border exception was refused and they chose to continue to sail to Opua regardless. None of the crew made any request for an immigration border exception for themselves.”

The crew advised the ministry that it intended to continue its journey to New Zealand. That information was passed to Customs, which intercepted the boat yesterday afternoon.

Anita was met by the Customs NZ patrol vessel Hawk V and escorted to a quarantine dock at Opua marina.

The Customs spokeswoman said the vessel was liable for seizure and duty liability and was being held in Customs control for further investigation.

A ship tracking website says that Anita had last docked at Taiohae on Nuku Hiva Island in French Polynesia.

The 4000km journey to the Bay of Islands took two months and 18 days, the website says.

A Ministry of Health spokeswoman said the crew had applied for the exemption on humanitarian grounds and to repair the ship.

“While there were aspects of the case that were unfortunate, these did not rise to the threshold of a compelling humanitarian need.

“As much as our country is known for its hospitality, New Zealand cannot become a maritime Covid-19 safe haven for everyone in unfortunate circumstances.”

Elms said the refusal of entry to New Zealand could have long-term consequences for the crew. Their visa waiver status could be suspended and it could affect their ability to travel to other countries.

The closure came back in July after Northland’s one-in-500-year flood.

Eight slips have completely blocked the highway since and it has been made worse by ongoing rainfall, NZ Transport Agency’s Jacqui Hori-Hoult told 1 NEWS.

“Not only have we discovered we’ve had the major underslip where the road has actually completely given way but we’ve also got an overslip that is sitting above that,”
