  3. The Managed Retreat and Climate Change Adaptation Bill didn’t get a lot of chat during the campaign, but there’s a chance it could be one of the most significant and contentious pieces of legislation passed this term.

It could change parts of our economy and could lead to billions of dollars being paid out to New Zealand homeowners.

Managed retreat is the term used to describe towns and cities slowly withdrawing from coastal and low-lying areas that are vulnerable to the effects of climate change. As sea levels rise, many of New Zealand’s coastal areas will become uninhabitable.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/climate-news/300137847/election-2020-the-biggest-thing-the-government-will-do-that-youve-never-heard-of

Go buy your beach front asap.
Parker wants to bail you out from soething that ain’t ever going to happen.

A taxpayer-funded bailout of beachfront property has the potential to turn into a political Gordian knot, but leaving homeowners to their fate isn’t really an option either.

So once again the taxpayer and the ratepayer are prime targets for the socialising of lossess.

    You voted these pricks in.

    • Of course it is not climate change that is responsible for sea erosion.
It’s a natural occurrence and is continually happening.
There were some guys on TV recently putting in a concrete barrier somewhere down south.Trouble is the sea will eat away underneath and in time they will begin to tip over.
Man can’t stop what nature does.

    • This is a laugh. In Wellington last year they announced a major project –a new cycle way from the out skirts of the CBD along the foreshore to Petone. (there is already a rail line and an existing cycle/walk way but they want something that looks really fancy.). It will also involved moving the existing seawall out into the harbour or building a new one –no squeal from the Greens about marine life.

Two weeks after the announcement a report comes out about climate change, the probable effects on the region and the need to take it into future planning. The project was meant to cost $75million with an upper limit of $95 million. So here is a project on the water’s edge ( sea level rises, anyone!!) and on an earthquake fault line. Recently it was announced it will start next year and the cost is now $130 million. ( final cost –anyone’s guess like most projects run by Councils)

Did in 1856. and the West coast is going under so the sea there will always encroach. Unlike Kaikoura or the cost out over Wainui way. Go there and you can see the lifts from the past.

        • Hi – I never got from your post that you supporetd alarmist crap. A real problem is when Climate Skeptisism is determined to be “Hate Speech”. It could happen and is why its critical that Trump wins. However, no matter how much they silence scientists, huge fucking ice sheets can’t be stopped, nor can blizzards, crop failures , increased storms ( both in number and severity – the exact opposite to the warming alarmist propoganda)… and all the other calamities that made prior cold periods really shit times to live in. The cold is coming, just look at https://electroverse.net/ …. I for one will just sit back and laugh.

          • The first example of changes and the effects can be seen in China this year. We have not heard much about it but the massive flooding below the 3 Gorges Dam (and those above it) has ruined massive areas of crops. I not sure if the land is damaged permanently or semi permanently for future agriculture but they will have taken a significant hit this year.

    • I do not agree that either the taxpayer or the ratepayer should be even considered in meeting the costs of homeowners displaced by erosion or sea levels changing over time.

Simply put, you live near the sea knowing the risks as they have been with us since time began. Obtain insurance, read the hazard notices about coastal risk zones on the certificate of title. This is a matter of personal responsibility and not one to expect the community to cover.

You have enjoyed the location and you have to be ready to accept and absorb any consequences of it.

  4. US Justice Department files anti-trust lawsuit against Google, says breakup of company not off table
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/world/2020/10/us-justice-department-files-anti-trust-lawsuit-against-google-says-break-up-of-company-not-off-table.html

“Google is now the unchallenged gateway to the internet for billions of users worldwide … For the sake of American consumers, advertisers, and all companies now reliant on the internet economy, the time has come to stop Google’s anticompetitive conduct and restore competition.”

“Ultimately it is consumers and advertisers that suffer from less choice, less innovation and less competitive advertising prices,” the lawsuit states. “So we are asking the court to break Google’s grip on search distribution so the competition and innovation can take hold.”

Republican Senator Josh Hawley, a vociferous Google critic, accused the company of keeping power through “illegal means” and called the lawsuit “the most important antitrust case in a generation.”

  6. Up North Maori have the genesis of a plan to reduce homelessness. In this instance the initiative has come from an organisation set up to assist those with drug addictions.

But what makes the difference is that here the housing offered are Porticoms set up on Maori land. Maori are not short of land. What they are short of is capital to build houses for their people because 1) properly no bank or financial organisation will loan against construction on communally owned land & 2) the standards of construction insisted upon by idiotic local body knowalls raise costs to a point where nothing can be attempted.

The latter are incapable of seeing that perfect is the enemy of good. Maori leaders worthy of their mantle should applaud the efforts being made, tell the councils to butt out & supply housing that is fit for purpose rather than photography.

    • The answer to lending money to them is in their own hands. Settle their bickering over their billion Treety claims with the Sealord deal, put it into the Bank of Ngapuhi and THEN lend it to their people to build houses on their own land.
If they are such a good risk, who better than their own landowners to hold the risk.

      13

      • Northland Maori are so fractured they couldn’t get together & agree on where or when the sun rose never mind run a bank. In any case a billion would provide loans of $250000 each to 4000 recipients which still wouldn’t fix the housing situation.

The solution (in my opinion) is to get the fucking councils out of micromanaging development & stipulating building standards which while relevant in Invercargill have no connection with the reality of sub tropical Northland.

  7. He had a column to write, a deadline approaching and no ideas until he saw three old men sitting on a park bench. A perfect public interest column! He got out his notebook and asked the first man, “To what do you attribute your long life?”
“Clean living”, the old man replied, “I never chased women, never drank or smoked, always ate right. I got lots of fresh air and exercise all my life.” “How old are you”, the writer asked. The old man replied, “I’m eighty-six.”
The writer asked the same question of the second man and he replied. “Hard work. I always get up with the birds and go to bed when the sun goes down and I keep busy all day. I take a lot of vitamins and supplements because I don’t have time to be sick. That’s how I got to be ninety-three years old.”
The third man was the oldest-looking of the three. His colour was bad and his voice was shaky when he answered, “ I drink a quart of whiskey a day along with a few beers. I have a wife and a couple of girlfriends that I visit several times a week. I smoke 3 packs of cigarettes a day and I’ll smoke anything you’ll offer me. I especially like to smoke weed. I’ll snort cocaine and heroine if I can get it and occasionally shoot it in a vein. I never go to bed before 2–3 AM because I play a lot of poker. As far as food is concerned, the spicier and greasier it is, the better I like it.”
“How old are you”, the stunned writer asked.
    “I’m twenty-seven”, the man replied

      Then the next one.
      and the one after that.

Living in a blind red rage the media filth were too stupid to see that Dozy Todd M. would have kept Notional in the darklands forever.
      That is what they want.

If Simon Bridges was a leaker then that fucker should be demoted to last spot.

Nick Smith was largely tolerated because he maintained a blue-green tinge in trendy 1970s hippy jive Nelson.

Denise Lee is poison and always has been even in Auckland Council.
Rebuilding from the current lot is tall order.
They have progressively selected weaker and weaker MPs esp under the John Key/Peter Badfellow combo.

The last 6 years has been shit for Notional and the electorate sent a message.

This together with Auckland Central shows Green support in NZ the same as in Australia and probably a few other countries. It is the centre of the big cities where they have no idea of how most people live and where their food is produced.

    • I am not OK with the censorship. Not planning on voting for this party either but even if the government or the media involved does not agree with their message, it should still be able to be published as the party is prepared to pay for. I’ll support a media company holding back though where they form a view the material is liable to create legal problems for the printer/publisher.

    • Summarizes the attack, the supposed better form of living constitution, on free speech.
You can click through to Bazelon’s original article, though it is long , in all its self righteousness.
Still interesting to note how they position their argument, the words used, to push the changes through, and to take in others for support.

Emily Bazelon believes that government and corporate censorship must be used to save free speech, and she made her case very poorly in an op/ed riddled with Orwellian doublespeak.

“It’s an article of faith in the United States that more speech is better and that the government should regulate it as little as possible. But increasingly, scholars of constitutional law, as well as social scientists, are beginning to question the way we have come to think about the First Amendment’s guarantee of free speech,” Bazelon wrote, effectively arguing for an end to the Bill of Rights.
      https://www.blacklistednews.com/article/78269/doublespeak-new-york-times-magazine-says-the-biggest-threat-to-free-speechis-free.html

I do enjoy some of the succinct points in that article.

Some of the comments are good, but some go over the top, that unwittingly wreck, and sideline their points.
From one of the better comments:-

“All propaganda has to be popular and has to adapt its spiritual level to the perception of the least intelligent of those towards whom it intends to direct itself.” – Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf
      – – – – – – – – – – – – –
“The control of information is something the elite always does, particularly in a despotic form of government. Information, knowledge, is power. If you can control information, you can control people.” Tom Clancy
      – – – – – – – – – – – – –
“We’ll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false.” William Casey CIA Director (from 1st staff meeting 1981)
      – – – – – – – – – – – – –
“If you don’t read the newspaper you are uninformed. If you do read the newspaper you are misinformed.” Mark Twain
      – – – – – – – – – – – – –
“It is the absolute right of the State to supervise the formation of public opinion.”
      – Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Minister of Propaganda

Know the enemy, know our selves,
Understand the reasons, the major points for free speech., all the better to defend it.

  13. Well no shit, Sherlock. Left it a bit late.

“President Emmanuel Macron is increasingly concerned by what he calls Islamist separatism: the attempt by elements within France’s large Muslim community to impose conservative Islamic beliefs over the traditional values of the French Republic in some communities.”

    11

    • Macron must walk around all day with his head up his arse.
France is infested with the filthy rodents. Along with the UK..its only a matter of time before the full takeover. Ally Akbar.

    • Laws are being put in place to bolster,-
“Laïcité which takes a stricter stance on separation of church and state.
A French citizen is to be regarded as a citizen first.
In public places/buildings like public schools, administrative buildings, court rooms citizens are regarded as equal. These are secular spheres.
So people are not allowed to wear overt religious symbols in these places.”

From the other side of French politics:-

…….. the attack demonstrates the necessity for its already-proposed law on Islamic “separatism,” which will be introduced before parliament on December 9, and may now be further strengthened.

It includes a ban on Islamic schools where girls wear the headscarf, but no similar restrictions on Christian educational institutions, and gives the state vast powers to dissolve any association which does not adhere to “Republican values,” as determined by the prime minister. ……

…… It is difficult to describe the hypocrisy involved in the attempts by Macron to present himself as a bulwark for democratic traditions and free speech.
His government is perhaps best known for being condemned by international human rights organizations for its police violence, and for video images of riot officers using tear-gas and shooting rubber bullets at “yellow vest” protesters.
It is involved in imperialist wars across the Sahel and the Middle East, deliberately allowing thousands of refugees attempting to reach Europe by boat to drown in the Mediterranean.

As for “free speech,” the Macron administration has pursued Disclose journalists who revealed illegal French arms sales to support the Saudi Arabian war against the impoverished population of Yemen ….
      https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2020/10/19/fran-o19.html

This lot believes it can take all on board, and not sink under a very strong ideology.

The question of controlling “free speech” like about islamophobia, but all these things should be discussed, debated, as also immigration.
The koran should be read, in chronological order, observing the abrogation verses, that Mohammad commanded muslims should do, to be assured of Paradise.

Then an understanding of what islam is about, and endorsed by hadith, sira, scholars, sheiks, imams as also current universities are ok with.

A little bit musim is like just a little bit pregnant.
Then it devolves into the “abortion debate”, which would seem to see the writhing in France in its current politics.

      4

    • France will not really change, that is how these students believe and what they make of “free speech”.

A student speaks around the silence:
“ For several years, freedom of expression has been threatened because some journalists lack respect for religions and do not take the laws into account…
If we go beyond the limits, there are will have attacks.”

In the room, everyone nods. In the middle, the professor is annoyed.

” We had yet made a large reminder of what the law allowed ,” he swears.
“For them, the law is something abstract. They are not based on texts, but on their personal distinction between good and evil. ”

      https://www.marianne.net/societe/education/liberte-dexpression-a-lecole-pour-mes-eleves-charlie-hebdo-cest-lextreme-droite?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter&Echobox=1603092712#xtor=CS2-5
      I did use google translate.

At all times the students will support any form of now the super encompassing “racism”.
No reason, no understanding, but they know they are good, as they know what is good and what is evil.
The student’s decisions seems to be final and absolute.

So France will seem to be torn apart.

      • Good point Sooty.
Would Ardern call for another ‘adhan’?
Could hijab’ed infidel Ardern pass the koran to her?

[2002 Labour MP. Ashraf Choudhary] He was sworn in on the Qur’an, something which Winston Peters (leader of the New Zealand First party) criticised as a breach of proper procedure.
The rules, however, contained no prohibition against it, allowing the taker of the oath to specify any religious text they wished (or, alternatively, use none at all).
Because Parliamentary officials did not have a copy of the Qur’an, they obtained a copy from the FIANZ office, which was then donated to the Parliamentary Library for use in the future.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashraf_Choudhary

Then the stand Labour MP., Ashraf Choudhary made about abstaining on voting about prostitution per above wiki link
He also came to public attention in 2003, when he abstained in a vote to legalise prostitution.
The Muslim community were upset by his decision to abstain from voting since prostitution is seen as a violation of their faith.
Well they do have a quick hitch marriage system, and 3 times just saying “divorce” system.

Note how the koran will be handled?
Would an infidel woman be allowed to even touch it, or even hand it to her, to swear on?
As a muslima is she allowed to hold the koran as some may consider her a “prostitute”.?
Will she even hand shake a man’s hand?

After the Revolution, [Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah] Khomeini opposed allowing women to serve in parliament, likening it to prostitution.
        “We are against this prostitution.
We object to such wrongdoings … Is progress achieved by sending women to the majlis? Sending women to these centers is nothing but corruption.”

So does she take on the real meaning of “a ho” as many NZ radio journalists declare now?

        Labour MP Choudhary also

Mr Choudhary was asked: “Are you saying the Koran is wrong to recommend that gays in certain circumstances be stoned to death?”
He replied: ” No, no. Certainly what the Koran says is correct.
“In those societies, not here in New Zealand,” he added.

        https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/some-stoning-okaynbspsays-choudhary/IKKIXQUUWARTR3MZ6O2LGANCBM/

It will tie in with the new speech laws, that the koran will not be a book to make fun of as New Zealand moves in a parallel form of islamic control.
So no mocking, no ridicule, no singing, no music, not even a joke.

[Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini] ….. “There are no jokes in Islam.
There is no humor in Islam.
There is no fun in Islam.
There can be no fun and joy in whatever is serious.
Islam does not allow swimming in the sea and is opposed to radio and television serials. ……..

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_thought_and_legacy_of_Ruhollah_Khomeini

By the very travels of the prophet Mohammad on Buraq one night.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “I was shown the Hell-fire and that the majority of its dwellers were women who were ungrateful.”
It was asked, “Do they disbelieve in Allah?” (or are they ungrateful to Allah?)
He replied, “They are ungrateful to their husbands and are ungrateful for the favors and the good (charitable deeds) done to them.
If you have always been good (benevolent) to one of them and then she sees something in you (not of her liking),
she will say, ‘I have never received any good from you.”

So what islamic wisdom and science will this muslima Labour MP push in a NZ parliament.
Oh yeah, Uses and studied in the western education system and science, but leverages of the back of islam.
Note how Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in the above link, would many times say one thing, and then practice the opposite, when more able to.

  15. Māori Party’s Rawiri Waititi promises ‘disruptions’ to the ‘system’

Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi promises to be an “unapologetic” voice for tangata whenua in Parliament, saying Labour’s Māori Caucus is “subjugated”.
    https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/m-ori-partys-rawiri-waititi-promises-disruptions-system?auto=6203277533001

If he ended up in Parliament, Waititi promised he would make changes in the “system” he says keeps Māori “in second place”.

“That system doesn’t belong to us. So our job is now to go through and start to manipulate that system and make disruptions here and there.

He said he wanted to see changes to the Māori Electoral Roll. Currently, Māori are only able to switch between that roll and the general roll every five years.

The Māori Party campaigned to register all Māori to the Māori Electoral Roll and allow them to switch rolls at any time.

    • You have your ear to the ground Kea. I read a comment on the other blog saying the rumour around town (Wgt) is that Robertson wants Foreign Affairs , not Finance. Have you heard anything? If true it tells you a lot –he knows the economy is going to be really difficult and he is too lazy to hang in there to work on it.

      • Well, that would be hospital pass of the decade if he pulled that off. How could he get away with that tho? Would they give Finance to Phil Twiford, or maybe the Kelvinator?

Coronavirus: 23 new imported cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand, two cases linked to port worker
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/10/coronavirus-23-new-imported-cases-of-covid-19-in-new-zealand-two-cases-linked-to-port-worker.html

There are 23 new imported cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand, the Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday, and two new cases connected to the port worker who tested positive over the weekend.

It follows the confirmation of 11 new imported cases on Tuesday. It was revealed that 11 fishermen had tested positive for the virus while isolating at the Sudima Hotel in Christchurch. A large number of seamen from Russia and the Ukraine arrived on Friday and were taken to the facility to complete their 14 days of managed isolation.

    • The companies importing the workers will have to pay for their quarantine.
All of their fishing boats are tied up in Lyttelton. Big factory boats. They catch and process most of the fish on board. Quite an impressive sight. They will fill each boat with around 150000 litres of light fuel oil ( LFO) and that will last them about 6 weeks of 24/7 fishing around NZ. They return to port, offload, refuel and do it all again.
Expect to see the price of fish go through the roof. 550 imported crew at 3100 bucks each for quarantine..1.7 million bucks for starters.

        • I’ve got a few mates in the crayfish industry but once the quota’s been caught there’s not a lot of work on offer. In the 90’s a couple of these deckies did a few trips on the trawlers operating in the Southern Ocean. They signed on one of the Talleys boats out of Nelson after doing the mandatory course at the Westport Deep Sea Fishing School.

The trips were six weeks on & six weeks off. As our friend Mike Hunty stated above they came into port, unloaded, refueled, reprovisioned, signed on a new crew & off back to sea. From accounts the money was good (wages & a share of the catch), the hours were long, sleep was a luxury but the food was excellent & you could buy a couple of cans a day if you wanted.

Except! About this time the Maori Fisheries deal had been signed & it guaranteed work for Maori on any of the boats fishing Maori owned quota. A minimum of two Maori had to be crew members for each trip. Apparently our brave descendants of Kupe & Maui started crying for their mummies when the land disappeared from the horizon.

Many hours & many days were wasted trying to get two token Maori on board before the boats could sail.

          • Local Maori, in Nelson, bemoan the fact Sealord prefers the local South East Asian community for their factory staff. While it’s Maori owned.

Maori in my rohe didn’t get rich by being tribal.

          • The wages on those freezer trawlers are great. I knew a few women who worked in the factory on board –they loved it, great money , really hard work but well worth it. This was 20 years ago but I’m sure it would still be the same.
Back then NZ trawlers were much better than the Russian or Korean boats which were generally much older. Talleys, Sealord and Sanford tended to have newer purpose built boats. Peter Talley got a lot of bad press from the uninformed media but he was the only one in the industry who refused to use foreign trawlers. He steadfastly stood his ground and said all his quota should be caught by NZ owned boats.

  19. David Seymour on how ACT differs from National and why Greens should ‘resist being hugged to death by Labour’
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2020/10/david-seymour-on-how-act-differs-from-national-and-why-greens-should-resist-being-hugged-to-death-by-labour.html

“I imagine it will be a very collegial relationship with the National Party,” he said of ACT’s relationship with National going forward. “There are areas where we agree but there are also very good reasons why we have different parties.”

Seymour said ACT is sceptical about how much of a role the state should play.

“I look at the election campaign and in many instances, it seemed National was trying to compete with Labour for the Government to tax more and do more. Somebody’s got to be asking the question: is the hardworking taxpayers’ dollar being used well?”

    • …..”Seymour said ACT is sceptical about how much of a role the state should play.”…..

I hope he doesn’t forget that statement. This previous National voter became an ACT supporter because he wants the state to fuck & beyond out of the private lives of its citizens.

What women do with their reproductive organs, when we die & what we smoke are personal decisions while government should concentrate on drainage bills, defence & how to pay for the lifestyles of the workshy.

Though pretty much everyone shows a different side of themselves sexually.

The difference with leftists is they are more into power and control shit.
