The government announced on Tuesday that they are ending the practice of joint and several liability, also known as ‘the last man standing’.
For those that don’t know, under the current law, Auckland ratepayers must bear significant costs as the insurer of last resort, with uncapped financial liability in many building disputes.
The changes will make the liability proportional to each party’s involvement.
I have been pushing for this change since my original manifesto so it’s great to see the government listening to me rather than the bureaucrats.
Congratulations to Minister Chris Penk MP on a job well done. Next, I hope to see the exempting Auckland from the absurd earthquake-strengthening rules.

For anyone still interested cardan shaft (or driveshaft) parking breaks are used on light/medium trucks especially 4 x 4s. Instead of brake shoes being forced against drums or callipers pressed onto rotors at the wheel the mechanism works on the drive shaft just behind the gearbox. Heavy vehicles such as line haul, stock & logging units rely on wheel located air brakes which work differently.

What I don’t understand is why cardan shaft brakes rely solely on lever action to lock them on. If they were backed up with electric over air or hydraulics which most trucks have even a wet brake would do the job.
