      It has been climbing like crazy for this week.
      A steady climb from about 66 cents at the beginning of November.
      This morning sitting at 70.8 cents per US$

      On a cattle beast it used to be a 1 cent rise, dropped the value of the beast by about $30 dollars.
      A “grass market” and an optimism, the Christmas New Year period with some rain has kept the market up.
      Farmers have been a bit cautious already, possibly due to drought worries imposed by Climate Change. 🙁
      and considering CoVid effects like what happened with an extended waiting time to get stock processed last autumn.
      The meat companies will eventually reflect the 5 cents as already the lamb market has in part.

      Fortunately world wide demand for food has increased to cover this, but there is a point when this drops away.
      The meat companies need to recover, re-balance where they may have over paid, and do so when the flow of prime livestock will kick into gear in the New Year.
      Basic supply & demand, but it looks like it will get rough next year.

      Fonterra may have been able to work some foreign currency forward cover, and so most of their production for the season will be covered. A postponing effect, and at the moment everyone is busy, and too far off to think about the next season.

      A funny blurb about a week ago about how exporters are not concerned about the $
      Sure there are problems like getting containers, shipping schedules etc. and they are important.
      The high $ effect does not go away and will catch up for NZ exporters, and even more so for the business’s that have got into down stream processing.

      However, life goes on, and never more sure that there will be change and even reversals, as David Lange said, “reef fish”.

      The imports, ware house, Christmas lights, even fuel, will keep people happy, and their big worries of not receiving their Christmas present for the moment.
      How will it pan out in the New Year if this $ stays high?

    Your comment last night about Scot Watson’s abilities to sail the treacherous waters of the East Coast reminded me of this…

    Three Wellington businessmen sailed a yacht down from Auckland to Wellington on behalf of another person, stopping off overnight in Gisborne where they spent the night drinking and clubbing. In the early hours, when they staggered back to the yacht like three drunken sailors, they got rolled by some local ferals and relieved of what cash they still had.

    One of the yacties put up a fight and got a tonking for his efforts, resulting in a trip to the hospital. When the A & E doctor began to examine his bloodied face, he said, “hey doc, can you check this out first”, and dropped his pants to reveal a badly swollen, bruised and lacerated scrotum and penis.

    He explained that while rounding East Cape, he had taken a shower and was having a shave while still naked. Unaware to him at the time, his bits and bobs dangled down into the opened top draw of the cabinet and as he leaned in towards the mirror on the last razor stroke, the yacht hit a large wave, throwing him forward into the drawer, slamming it shut with those bodily bits still inside it.

  7. Import frustrations and costs rise for NZ businesses as global freight jam worsens

    Managing director Don Braid has been advised by a major shipping line it will not accept any new space bookings from China to Europe until some time in the new year.

    “We’ve got 350 containers sitting on the wharf in Shanghai waiting for ships to go north to Europe. You can forget about those until January.

    “If you think we’ve got issues here in New Zealand which are frustrating and upsetting for customers and retailers, the same is applying round the world right now.”
    Bryan Johnston, managing director of Auckland-based First Global Logistics, said shipping lines have raised their rates by 400 per cent since July with more rises planned. On top of this is the Auckland congestion surcharge they’ve imposed since ships have been waiting 10 days at the port to be unloaded. The charge can be up to US$500 a container. This is worn by the importer and, inevitably, passed on to consumers.

    Due to Covid-19, importers have lost the equivalent of 600 containers a week of aircraft space for urgent Christmas freight, Johnston said. The space shortage is acute for imports from north Asia, particularly China.

    If you’re on the other end of the zoom date, this woman looks great. Put together, sophisticated, and happy. She is perfectly framed for the camera. Her face is proud and smiling. But deep inside she knows the truth. Or does she?
    The room she’s in is tiny. It’s filthy. There are multiple cats and a litter box right next to her. There is trash strewn about, used masks and gloves on the floor, take out containers with chop sticks poking out, and many many wine bottles on top of the fridge.
    When you look closer you see prescription pill bottles. You see hairy legs. You see soccer shorts and slippers on to go with that pretty shirt. You see amazon boxes..so many of them, some remain un opened. You see Cheetos bags, a bed that hasn’t been slept in, and one piece of fancy cookware sitting lonely on top of the cabinets.
    Everywhere around her is distress, symbols of waste, decadence, dependence…dependence on drugs, alcohol, fake appearances, and the ‘conveniences’ of modern life.
    The women thinks she is a strong independent female, but instead she is an isolated, dependent, drug using, self medicating, delusional conscript. She’s living a disgusting and empty life but puts on that pretty face for an unsuspecting man on the other end of the zoom call.
    The New Yorker published the cartoon, so it’s hard to tell what the motivations were. Are they making a self aware critique of modern women and the ills of modernity in general? Or are they just putting lipstick on the pig like the editors are likely doing at home in their own lives?
    You can’t be sure. But what you can know, is that the cartoon on the cover of the New Yorker has summed up the state of affairs perfectly. Modernity is killing us. And modern women are a disgrace.
    Unfortunately….most modern men are a disgrace too. In fact, most men are even more disgusting than today’s woman. Why? Because women get to have status simply by being young and beautiful. It’s hard to take that away from them. Their behavior isn’t tied to their value in the way it is for men. Modern women can be valuable despite their flaws.
    Modern men can not.
    Imagine the mirror image of this New Yorker cartoon, if it were a man. He’d be skinny fat, or just plain obese. He’d have no muscles. He would have trash and junk around him just the same. But instead of cats and wine there’d be weed and video games. Today’s men are soft and ambitionless. They’re manipulated man-children who haven’t built a fucking thing in their lives. Soy boys we call ‘em. Weak, isolated, unproductive masturbation machines. No kids, no future, no legacy.
    We’re sick and fucking tired of the loser men and disgusting women out there.

        My understanding is that Worksafe are handing out prosecutions like Xmas cards to everyone involved with tourism on White Island including the owners of the island itself. They relate to the companies ignoring the increase of volcanic activity that led to the alert level being raised.

        If there is any justice in NZ, which I doubt, the rescuers’ actions should be rewarded with an shitload of brownie points against any fines should they be convicted.

      Occam’s razor, keep it simple.
      On that clip, too much language control, the idiom, then building a series of small straw men to bend the argument, like who said the fire men were ever in the building, but any one in a certain large radius should be evacuated any way, considering the shocking loss of firemen’s life a bit earlier, and the radius of that disaster.

      Sure I am aware of some contention, but rightly or wrongly evaluated other reasons why it became known as a risk of collapse, as with the twin towers.

      Following that then leads to credibility issues, and what it means then leads to what is considered other issues but are they? That just follows a rabbit? and shadows of rabbits down their own warrens, with no real credibility.
