Philosophical question. Why do we actually celebrate New Year? Most other public holidays have a religious origin, or celebrate an important event or person. ( Can’t figure out stupid regional holidays like Auckland anniversary etc. – At least have them all on the same day). I know that ancient cultures celebrated the solstice as that meant the days would be getting longer again and summer would return. Seems like it is an excuse to get pissed, dress up, watch fireworks, make stupid resolutions, (get arrested), crash the car, start a decade long family feud, eat too much, fill the emergency wards, piss the neighbours off… but WHY?
Depends on the culture to a certain extent ROL. Instance my MIL who arrived in NZ from Dundee as a baby. Brought up Scots but Kiwi by nature she only regarded Xmas as an opportunity to spoil her grandchildren. The main event which gave cause to open the whiskey bottle & throw away the top was New Year or Hogmanay.
Anniversary days, at least in the provinces, are all over the place because they came into being in the 19th Century when central government held much less sway. NZ was divided into six provinces & fairly much ran their own affairs. Understandable when MPs were faced with long & somewhat dangerous sea voyages to attend sittings of parliament.
