  1. So no one arrived early this morning then?
In that case you won’t have noticed that as per usual and normal the National Govt. got the result it was always after with the report on the required new ferries.
Now remember who were on that committee. a former POT CEO. (coastal Shipping )
An airport Manager of a scummy tiny airport in the boon docks and a former Nat MP.
Hardly a group without there own particular interests.

The Government’s independent advisory group has recommended brand new Cook Strait ferries, similar in size to the current fleet, 1News understands.

Last week, Ministers received a report from the group in which it’s understood options were laid out for the specifications of the new ferries and when they could arrive.

The group has recommended that the ferries be smaller than the proposed iRex ferries and not rail-enabled, although rail would still be able to be shunted onto the vessels as often happened now.

So a complete attempt to derail rail despite wiser operators like Main Freight, who currently have the biggest transport business in NZ and complimented by a huge business over sea’s saying that rail needs to be enabled. Far be it from me to argue with Don Braid and he should have been on that committee. Much of their overseas freight will be rail-enabled.

and before we hear about Blue Bridge it’s clear they have their issues as well.
Both fleets are old and Blue Bridge is owned by an oversea’s venture company. Those companies usually have a 5 year time frame to quit as has happened with PBT. The courier customers were sold to NZ Post.
The couriers just got don’t come on Monday and never mind your investment. The trucks are about to go as well to Mainstream. The venture company is leaving with cash in its pocket and doesn’t give a shit about the wreckage it leaves behind. Totally normal for them. Toll did the same if you stretch your minds back a bit.

Either we get behind NZ and make it good or we continue down the track where places like Britain are going. We can thank the poms for that heritage. Colonialism at its finest.

    • V2 is right. Bluebridge is going to need a massive injection of capital to replace its antique fleet & an overseas investment company will fold the business & take the cash. The void left by taking two ferries off the Strait run will be massive. Once again the UK show their true colours.

The size of the ferry replacements as proposed is the correct one. The entrance to Tory Channel imposes its own size restrictions & all it would take would be a near miss by one of Labour’s gold plated monstrosities for all ferries to be routed around Koamaru & Queen Charlotte Sound adding massively to time & distance.

We need replacement ferries. Not wanked up ocean liners.

  2. Did you know that Lake Titicaca, located on the border between Peru and Bolivia, is the highest navigable lake in the world, at an altitude of 3,812 meters above sea level. With a surface area of approximately 8,372 km², it is the largest lake in South America by water volume and surface area. The lake is known for its rich history and cultural significance to Andean civilizations. According to Inca mythology, the god Viracocha emerged from its waters to create the sun, the moon and the stars. Pre-Inca cultures, such as the Tiahuanaco, also considered the lake sacred and established large ceremonial centers on its shores. Titicaca is home to numerous islands, both natural and artificial. Among the most notable are Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna, which are important archaeological sites with Inca ruins. The floating islands of the Uros, made of reeds, an aquatic plant, are another notable attraction; The Uros, an indigenous group, have inhabited these islands for centuries.

  3. Australia swamped by foreign home buyers spending $1.9 billion in just three months – most from China.

Foreign real estate investments worth $1.9 billion were approved in the last quarter of 2023, with the bulk of purchasers from China, despite the vast majority of Australians being in favour of the government putting heavier restrictions on Chinese buyers.
Chinese buyers had 592 successful approvals in the December quarter, followed by 154 from Indians, and 105 from Hong Kong residents. Foreign investors can also be Corporations and Foreign Governments.

The Great Replacement and Australia (Kalergi Plan)

A series of 2023 figures provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals that the foreign-born population of Australia now exceeds 30.7%. Today some 8.18 million foreign-born persons reside in Australia, a figure which has increased by 600,000 in just 3 years.

Between 2013 and 2023 some 467,000 Indians relocated to Australia resulting in in a doubling of the Indian share of the Australian population from 1.6% of the overall populace to some 3.2% today. More than 144,000 Nepalese relocated to Australia between 2013 and 2023, as well as over 223,000 Chinese and more than 143,000 Filipinos.

    • If you look at southern africa it seems you have white slavery in the form of paying taxes to fund the masses , then you get white flight which means the nation turns into a mess. On a global scale european type whitey hasn’t come anywhere close to being large slave owners in the world, it is more of a north african /western asian thing.

Japan is a hold-out, but is suffering from labor shortages in fields where young Japanese do not wish to work. (Japanese wages have been stagnant for decades. In many prefectures there is no minimum wage.) Japan had better get its robot army up and running soon. (In 2023 some 30% of the Japanese population were aged 65 or older. That’s going to be a huge medical liability if you let it.

The legend of “obatsuyama” may come under some serious consideration. What to do with all the needy yet unproductive elderly in Japan?

        • South Korean society indulges the worst aspects of both Capitalism and Confucianism. On one hand, there is rampant consumption, materialism and obsession with “image,” and on the other there is excessive pressure to respect one’s seniors and to confirm to social norms.

          10

          • South Korea.
A days difference in birthday can make one senior to the other.
So the senior expects the junior to defer, sort give privilege to the senior.

In the junior level, it does seem that the seniors take it for granted, and the Junior just accepts it.
But then Junior replicates this where he is senior to some one else.

It does seem to me, where I have worked in such situations, that it can look like a dog eat dog world.

It seems to be a one way street, where the senior does not seem to have any concern or respect for the junior. Just that it is expected.

One would then wonder how that works, say in a marriage?
When the senior is a man, then if the woman is senior, though I expect in the latter, that may not happen very much.

And how close is that to in Japan, where the boss expects his juniors to go on a bonding drinks party?

            7

            0

            • “And how close is that to in Japan, where the boss expects his juniors to go on a bonding drinks party?”

That practice is still alive, but the younger generation are questioning it more and more. Japanese youth are heavily into SNS and have a very good idea of what is happening to their peers around the world.

In Japan I am seeing more encouragement for youth “volunteer” activities (once the preserve of the blue-rinse brigade) and the promotion of living in the provinces and “tele-working” (remote working). In the underpopulated rural districts, land and housing is very cheap, compared with the Kansai and Kanto areas. There are problems with living in the sticks. Can your children get a good education? Will they leave for college in Tokyo and never return?
Slowly but surely, I think that young Japanese are discovering that there’s more to their country than just Tokyo and Osaka.

  5. The Recent Rotorua GP CME Conference and the Glaring Absence of that Darn Elephant

Prior to the conference there were three emails advising of cancellations of sessions due to speaker illness and/or family bereavement.

Dr Shane Reti, Minister of Health, who had been a confirmed speaker several months before pulled out three weeks prior due to other engagements, a ‘diary clash’ officially. (Maybe he didn’t want to face a crowd of disillusioned GPs?)
Dr Curtis Walker, former Chair of the MCNZ, had been going to speak about “Healthcare in a Post-Pandemic World” but pulled out apparently due to having clinical duties to attend to in Palmerston North. (Maybe he is dealing with a variety of unusual and devastating, rapidly fatal medical diagnoses in Palmerston North?)
Dr Helen Petousis-Harris, vaccinologist, pulled out on Thursday night. She had been scheduled to talk on Saturday afternoon on “Three Vaccines that are Cooler than You Thought”. No specific reason was given for her absence.
One speaker had 4 children sick with covid? At least one speaker ‘Zoomed in’ due to being in recovery from illness.

  6. Children Among Mass Casualties After US-Supplied Missile Targets Crowded Crimean Beach.

The Russian Ministry of Health in a recent update said that five people were killed in a series of strikes from Ukraine, which injured 124 people including 27 children. Among the deceased, two were children, the ministry said. The casualty toll is likely to climb over the next hours amid the emergency response and as hospital data is reported.

Moscow is calling it a ‘terrorist missile strike’ on Sevastopol with five US-supplied ATACMS tactical missiles, carried out just after noon local time. What’s more is that Russia says they were equipped with cluster warheads, making for a bigger casualty strike zone.

  8. Two Distress Calls: UK Navy Reports Crew Abandoned Ship In Gulf Of Aden, Kamikaze Drone Attack In Red Sea

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported two maritime incidents involving merchant vessels on Sunday. The first occurred in the Red Sea, where a suicide drone struck a vessel. The second incident took place in the Gulf of Aden.

Iranian-backed Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden continue ramping up, with two more incident reports in under 12 hours (as of 0800 ET) on Sunday morning. In oil markets, traders ignore broader conflict risks in the Middle East as the Gaza war may soon spill over into Lebanon. If further escalation is realized, then expect increased drone and missile attacks on commercial vessels sailing through critical maritime chokepoints in the Middle East, where trillions of dollars in global trade flows each year.

If you think its OK for Houtis to attack ships because the US sold arms to Saudi who Houtis had attacked is justified then say I didn’t like Somalia and because Houris attacked my ship I am justified in blowing up any ship leaving Somalia in the direction of my ships and if that ships was sucessful carpet bombing every area of Somalia I considered to be used in such attacks, because both nations are islamic.

  9. The Radical Left Can’t Understand Why Normal People Are Angry…

The reality is that it is exclusively the left who believes they are immune or exempt from moral questions – that everything is fair game so long as it serves “the greater good” as they define it.
It is only the left who will demonize you, cancel you, and deplatform you for disagreeing with them.
It is primarily the left who will deny you services and abrogate civility on the basis of your divergent beliefs.
It is exclusively the left who will try to ruin your life for something as innocuous as a tweet – and then with a straight face explain why some crime they’ve just been caught red-handed at committing, is irrelevant, or lacks the proper context to have any consequences for themselves.
Even the rule of law must be set aside for them, if they’re embroiled in a situation that they feel is unjust.
And for some inexplicable reason – people who aren’t far-left, woketard, cultural Marxists are palpably angry.

He has written a couple of times to the WH calling for Biden to be given a cognitive test and has been ignored. He is writing again, also calling for Biden and Trump to be drug tested after their debate on Thursday. Unknown terrorists went on a rampage using automatic weapons against religious sited in Dagestan, Russia on Sunday night. Authorities in the southern Russian republic situated in the Caucuses say that police officers were killed and wounded as the gunman targeted a synagogue and an Orthodox church.

At least nine are dead, and 25 injured. An Orthodox priest was also slain. A fire also resulted at the synagogue, with emergency response crews subsequently battling the blaze. Some reports say that two Orthodox churches were hit in the assault, and that a priest was killed.

Russia has been on edge ever since the March 22, 2024 Crocus City Hall attack in Moscow, which killed at least 145 and wounded hundreds more after heavily armed gunmen stormed the mall and concert venue. 19. Green communism in Dunedin achieves its goals. An ideology shows what it wants by what it achieves. Study the fruits. Total green success:

    — ODT
A Dunedin business says George St retailers are “dropping like flies” as the number of vacant stores reaches its highest level in 10 years.

But a property investor expects the number of vacant stores will drop as three “significant international leasings” are poised to open in the street later this year.

    Visitors lost after cafe closed
According to the latest retail occupancy survey by Quantify Consulting, about 15% of all retail units across the three main retail blocks in George St are unoccupied — 31% of the Farmers block, 12% of New Edinburgh Way and 9% of the Meridian Mall block.

The figure is the highest recorded in the past 10 years, and has increased about 36% from the previous quarter.

The Chapman Store owner Amy Chapman said she was “not at all surprised” that the number of vacancies had hit a peak.

“It just feels like they keep dropping like flies.”

Mrs Chapman said she had noticed a few more people coming into town since the $105 million revamp of the central city was completed.

But there had not been the “huge influx” she had been anticipating.

Getting a park had been “a nightmare” while work was being done and she believed some people had become used to avoiding the area.

There were about four empty stores near her shop, some of which looked “so ugly” and “quite derelict”, and she would not be surprised if a few more stores closed.

“I’m going to blame it all on the roadworks.

“I have been through two recessions in my time in business . . . but this is like a whole other level.

“I do think the street looks good, but I definitely don’t think it’s been worth it for the stress of the store owners and the people that have lost their businesses.”

Commercial property valuer Adam Binns, of Quantify Consulting, said this was the “single highest quarter”of vacancies since the company began collecting the data in 2014.

A mix of general economic conditions, a possible move to online retailing and “maybe, to some extent” the roadworks taking place in George St were to blame for the spike, he said.

Mr Binns said there was the possibility of more positivity along George St, now that the roadworks had finished.

Golden Centre mall director and property investor Jason La Hood said the number of vacant stores was “not a fair indication” of where the street was normally at, and he expected it to decrease over the next year.

The George St upgrades project had begun straight after the Covid-19 pandemic, which had been a “roadblock” to any new leasings.

But Mr La Hood said there were “three significant new international leasings” for George St he was aware of that had been signed and was expecting two of them to open within the next quarter.

These signings were “the type of tenant that people travel overseas to visit”, he said.

“They’re coming to Dunedin and that will definitely have a snowballing effect on their competitors wanting to be in Dunedin.

“I say let’s see where we are in 12 months, which I would say will be the barometer of how well George St is going to do in the future.”

In April, Australian and New Zealand cosmetics giant Mecca announced it was opening a store in Dunedin which a spokeswoman said would be “in the second half of the year”.

A Dunedin City Council spokesman said it kept a close eye on occupancy rates in George St.

The current rates were coming off the back of “historically high levels” in recent years and a short-term change did not point to a trend.

Current economic conditions and the cost of living crisis were contributing more significantly to reduced occupancy rates than any local conditions, he said.

The general condition and earthquake performance standards of buildings, as well as sensitivity to rents, could also contribute to vacancies.

“While we acknowledge the disruption caused by the George St retail quarter upgrade, it’s also important to acknowledge we pulled out all the stops to minimise this disruption and support businesses through this period.”

George St was proving to be a “drawcard” for new retailers, and staff had fielded inquiries from prospective tenants, similar to Mecca, looking to move to the street from elsewhere in Dunedin, he said.

  20. Germany has sold $300m in bitcoin over the last week.
It appears that they have much more .
The suggestion is that it was confiscated from a criminal years ago. The inference is that the criminal made money out of stealing livestream videos and selling.
He bought thousands of bitcoin with the money.
I wonder who that could be ??

  22. Well just learned something about public transport in Auckland. Mrs Saggy had to get a bus home from work tonight as I had her car. Turns out you can’t ride the bus without a HOP card. That’s right – they don’t take cash or bank cards. WTF? So if for some reason you’re caught short and are thinking about jumping on the Loser Cruiser, forget about it unless you have a HOP card.
Happy ending: Nice driver let Mrs Saggy ride for free.

    • Its not nice. Had to clean out a rental one day and there was this bucket sitting under the back veranda.
No idea what it was so went to tip it down the drain alongside of it. My god it didn’t smell that much but it was making me retch.
Thought it might have been a rotten placenda but maybe it was the same mix you had.

Thought I could handle most things but it was violent.

    • Yep, our fave is duck shit. but anything dead is great. The all time winner is a baby’s shit-filled nappy that some feral chucked in the bushes at the park. Bloody hell, and I had to chuck the dog in the boot to get it home before I could clean it.

    • theres a reason why hes been selective with his years hes provided data for.
go look for yourself, set the search function from 2000-2023. if hes worried about 2020-2023 then why dosent he give a fuck about 2013-2014?
yeah theres a jump but that can also be explained by cindys poo fingers shutting down the healthcare system for extended periods.
once again a smoking gun is just a fizzle of wet gunpowder, dont believe everything fed to you by nutter grifters on the internet.

  24. It very entertaining in our house tonight , we have all been a bit flu sick this week , the almost 14 year old daughter went and found an old covid test of her moms , took it apart drew a second line on it and snapchated it off to her school mates. The replies have been funny and even funnier when they find out her deception.
