Just had a quick look at today’s favourite topic. The ceremony at Waitangi. All the usuals were there.
What occurred to me was the lack of thinking that these usuals seem to have.
Let’s face it, Waitangi has become a place where the Maori Elite and their henchmen get together, supposedly to agree on their Treaty Grievances and then invite the people they want to abuse.
For that’s what they do.
Get the govt. i.e. the taxpayers’ representatives there and then abuse them with a diatribe of their latest demands and expectations, never mind that the Document they hang their arguments on was a simple one with quite a clear meaning. (well until jurists decided that the English language meant more than most of us would ever dream it meant. silly us.)
Abuse them in any way they can, whether it be in your face or with the subtleties of a groomer, is much of what the day is about.
It was not our founding document, as some claim, it was not even a treaty by definition, as a treaty, by definition, requires that both parties to the Treaty are Soverign Nations. Now Britain certainly managed that, but an assortment of 500+ iwi and Hapu certainly wasn’t.
So its real purpose was to bring peace among the tribes and stop the war mongers from anahilating other tribes and hapu etc. The way that was to be done was to allow the British to take over the colony and, therefore, introduce their military forces as the peacekeepers. It was a British playbook operation, as the same was done in lots of other countries. (was of course about trade and money.)
We should remember that by that time, much of the countryside had already been sold to Europeans, especially the NZ Company and that already there was intermarriage and trading going on.
Forward to the yearly debacle that has been and will always be Waitangi Day.
It is a falsehood built on misconceptions and untruths that has used to bully Kiwis into believing our Nationhood is founded on a peace treaty and that the rights inferred by jurists are sacrosanct and continually growing.
Now that’s not to say injustices were not done, nor is it to say that they shouldn’t be fixed.
The question is, when do we stop?
When do the abusers decide that it’s time to stop that process and live as one people?
And more importantly, when do the elected representatives stand up and say that is so?

Any truth to the narrative that the drop in gold and silver was China trying to manipulate the market?
Probably not. If they did, the effort failed because prices have bounced halfway back in a matter of days. The immediate reason given for the gold and silver crash on Friday was Trump’s appointment of Kevin Warsh to be the new head of the Federal Reserve. The markets viewed Warsh as a hawk who would keep interest rates high, make the dollar stronger, and fight inflation. That description may be true. Still, Warsh was more of a catalyst than a cause. The real reasons for the gold and silver price plunge had to do with hedge fund traders taking profits, automated momentum trading, stop loss algorithms, trend following and some panic. Let’s look at those causes closely.
Hedge fund traders don’t really care about gold as money. For them, it’s just another commodity like coffee, soybeans or lumber. They trade it on a leveraged basis using futures or over-the-counter derivatives. Hedge fund traders get bonuses based on their gains but only the gains that are booked. They generally do not get paid for mark-to-market profits unless the trades are closed out and the money is in the bank. Imagine a hedge fund trader who bought gold on December 31, 2025, at $4,340 per ounce using five-to-one leverage. With gold at $5,355 on January 29, the unleveraged profit was 23% but the leveraged profit was 117%! Time to cash out and take your money off the table. Of course, the trader can go back into the gold market whenever he wants, but profits of over 100% in one month are too good not to cash out. Next comes the automation. Once some traders start to cash out and the price starts to go down, computers tell others to do the same. They follow suit and the price goes down more. At that point, the stop-loss algos kick in. Traders pre-set a maximum loss, and when that threshold is hit, the computers automatically close out their position. That drives prices even lower. At this point, longs are getting margin calls on the futures exchange (or from OTC dealers like Goldman Sachs) and they sell their positions for cash to settle up with the dealers.
Selling begets selling. Trend following traders jump on board. Panic selling from all sides is not far behind. That’s how markets actually work behind the curtain of CNBC fake news about Kevin Warsh. The good news is that all of those phenomena are temporary. Once they work their way through the system, gold and silver will be back on their way toward new highs.

Tauranga Moana Iwi Meet with Prime Minister and Senior Ministers in Waitangi

Tauranga Moana Iwi Chairs have met with the Prime Minister and a delegation of senior Cabinet Ministers in Waitangi to chart a pathway as the hard work toward recovery begins in our region.
We were humbled by the Prime Minister’s recognition of how we deployed our people and resources in the immediate aftermath of this massive weather event.
During the hui, we outlined and presented a three-step process to help guide our collective direction.
We agreed the national inquiry should be conducted by the central government, but it was critical that the terms of reference were populated by an Iwi perspective. To ensure the investigation is robust we believe this cannot be conducted by the Tauranga City Council.
The other two points we raised were community and infrastructure resilience.
We advocated for investment in marae led emergency response capability. funding to support welfare coordination and a focus in areas that have the highest impact on our people.
During the event the current infrastructure failed to cope with the impact of the storm and we believe there is direct link to the rapid expansion of Tauranga. We have sought targeted drainage upgrades, geotechnical assessments for vulnerable marae, better roading into our Maori communities, water quality monitoring and a priority on housing, including insurance and consenting.
We have committed to working with agencies directly to ensure our people, marae and communities are fully engaged in the medium and long-term recovery effort.

Te Rangi are right in the heart of Tauranga but claims land in the county.
They are constanlty scrapping within themselves.
Today in New Zealand history, 4 February, 1840, James Busby drafted a version of the Treaty of Waitangi. It was one of many and is referred to as ‘The Littlewood Treaty’. Busby is also the man who wrote the final English draft of the Treaty which the Maori version (or versions) were based upon.
This original English text had never been found and long missed. On the other hand…might it not have been this one from 4 February? The long lost document was apparently re-discovered by Ethel Littlewood of Pukekohe’s children upon her death among old papers in 1989. It is signed “William Hobson, Consul and Lieutenant Governor.”
If the Littlewood document is the long-lost text then that would explain why it is a match for the Maori Verison of the Treaty but not the English one we have. The big difference it makes is that the Maori-Littlewood version is clear that New Zealand is for all New Zealanders. The version we have now can be, and has been, contrived to mean that Maoris had special ‘citizenship plus’ status.
It matters because historians want to know what Maoris believed they were signing up to in 1840.

Michall Laws spoke with Paul Moon the other day. As with other ‘public figures’ the notion that the Littlewood document is the draft of the Treaty was rubbished. However, that is standard – of course Littlewood will be decried because to accept it would mean 50 years of Treaty industry would be destroyed. Unfortunately I’ve not seen recently any interview with Martin Doutre.
