      This is like feeding money into a system like Bill Clinton’s money making “speech circuits”.

      • Years ago, some ordinary public built a row of flats, or invested in them.
        I recall land lords often also lived in one of the flats, to keep an eye on things, had their own formula for what was a good tenant, and could keep up maintenance, easily.
        Seems to have stopped long ago.

        Now with more government regulations that seems impossible, so no more private investment,
        Only councils seem to provide that housing, and at the same time put the fix onto rate payers.

        Not sure when this concept stopped, but it sure will not go back to that with the envy, verbiage, regulations, pushed by authorities then constantly wound-up, pushed by media.

      On their own the efficacy is not known.

      • The story of matariki has changed several times in the last few decades, its just another round of chinese whispers that a woke ass govt ran with.
        Average kiwi (incl bulk of maori) had never heard of it pre 2000, they just swallowed the narrative and ran with it.

        Maori new year, kumara day, navagation aid etc. To me none of those reasons are good enough to be a national holiday its a fucking joke. A national holiday to celebrate 1 race that continually drags said nation down.

          FWIW: Having as recently as this morning had conversations about this with several people, it appears that many (otherwise) sane people think it’s actually a great idea, if only to break the ‘holiday drought’ between the Queens Birthday and Labour Day holidays.

          Many (but not all, because it’s sometimes not THEIR tribe) Maori think it’s great as well, claiming that it gives ”Recognition’ to the indigenous people’ (etc. etc. etc. (Cue pre-recorded tape).

          It does seem however that the average Kiwi really doesn’t care about the ramifications and po9liticking though, and merely sees it as another (Welcome) day off to help pass the time and shorten their working week.

          Whether this ‘generosity’ will result in any ‘gratitude’ votes for labour in the future remains to be seen…

      A ‘holiday’ in the literal middle of winter.
      3 weeks after Q Bday weekend.

      It would be more useful for a holiday in early Sept when the weather is warming up and a more sensible break time between Early June (QBdy) and Labour day in late October.

    • It’s a copy of how Singapore deals with the problems of housing its people. The government allows married couples to buy apartments with favourable rates but they must be sold back to the government. It’s part of what proved to be Baity’s undoing when he used to bang on incessantly about Singapore being the ultimate conservative open market success. He was doing well until a few of us did some research. 🙂

      Leasing of sections for housing was common in NZ in the 70s & 80s. The land was owned & developed by community trusts. In the Wairarapa both Greytown & Masterton had such arrangements but when market rates drove the rentals skywards along with the tenants bleatings they sold the land to the occupants & concentrated on commercial development.

    • When I was primary school age up on the East Coast women were not allowed to speak on the local marae. That is not to say they didn’t have an influence on proceedings.

      It was customary for the women to sit to one side but close to the speaker. Being female they knitted & chattered like stoned starlings while the esteemed orators banged on at great length about very little.

        owned company. My manager and foreman are young
        enough to be my sons. Their Dad is my age, a good bugger
        and we all get on like old mates. No stress, no wanky politics
        just a good, honest small business that values their staff and
        treats them as equals. The money, I don’t give a shit about.
        They look after me and I get some great perks. Couldn’t be happier.
