The results of those who have not died from it, will discover interesting illnesses /diseases not been seen before within a year, but hey that’s all ok. At least they are not getting the rona 19.

      • The cock up in August 2020 was that the south line was in the wrong place on the Bombay hills. .
        Tuakau, Pokeno, Mangatawhiri and the likes are essentially dormitory suburbs to Auckland now.
        People were unable to go 5 km to work and/or spent 3 hours in line.
        After 10 days they had not sorted this in August 2020.

      I have been following the Auckland dam levels since August last year.

      There was 60 mm of rain on the 2 and 3 January 2021 and the level went up 7 percent.
      From about 58 % to 65% of storage capacity as I recall.

      There has been at least 50 mm in the last 24 hours on the plains so probably more in the hills and the rain has been steady since Midnight Monday so 42 hours now.
      Plenty of time for the water to flow in.

      The unit measure on this website at 11.57 am today (Tues ) after 36 hours of rain says the level is down 0.64% from a week ago.
      I’m calling bullshit by Water care.
      This is inconsistent with 2+3 January.
      They are clearly feathering the numbers for political purposes.

      2020 – 781 mm (about 30% below average)

      So far in 2021 we have completed full day 45 to 14 Feb. 12% of the year.
      There is 137 mm of rain per howick weather at midnight last night so 12% of average rainfall even thought this is the drier time.

      Sometimes there are large rain events in the first quarter mainly from an end of cyclone event eg. 28 Jan 2011 over 100 mm in a few hours from ex-Tropical Cyclone Wilma. I remember going to the Casino in Hobson Street and the downhill road was actually a torrent.

    I’m so glad we’re paying big bucks for health officials to keep us safe and will eagerly roll up my sleeve for the vaccine they assure me is completely safe //

  14. Yesterday Mangawhai and Kaiwaka became part of Auckland. This was apparently because it made it easier to set up a road block there. Apparently the checkpoints have now been shifted further south. I have quite a few customers out that way and they are not happy. Last time the checkpoint was at the north end of Wellsford, the border is actually in Te Hana. Who was the imbecile who came up with this bright idea? Will there be repercussions? Some of the people I know are talking legal action, they have deep pockets and aren’t amateurs. This could get interesting. My bet is they’ll be paid off by Cindy’s mob.

    • The govt failed to notify business’ in the north and south of Auckland that the border would not be placed where they were last time but moved kilometres further away from the rona infected Auckland outbreak. The positioning of the north and south borders affected staff accessing work, food preparation, stock delivery, numbers of customers able to access over the new border, etc, etc.

        • An ethnic Indian friend (born in Fiji but now a NZ citizen) told me that his wife had arranged a marriage (through her contacts in the Old Country) for their geeky 26-year-old son with an Indian girl from the Punjab region. The girl sounds like a good sort. She works in a bakery, but doesn’t speak any English and doesn’t drive. The plan will be for her to come and live with the son and his mother (my friend separated from his wife several years ago).
          Imagine this young Indian woman, living in the worst possible situation. i.e., with her mother-in-law and her dutiful son (the stuff of so much Japanese women’s drama TV). This girl will not have any social network in Auckland, and her husband and in-laws will be all that she has.
          On the other hand, if she is a plucky young thing, she can learn English, get her own smartphone and take driving lessons, and build up her own network of friends from scratch. It will be up to her. There are certainly plenty of young Indian women in Auckland that she can network with.
          I couldn’t help but ask my friend if the Kiwi Indian girls weren’t good enough for his son. He wouldn’t give me an answer, but my spider senses told me that his wife was the prime mover to get her son hitched up with a controllable partner before he became too old and stale. (And there was an inexhaustible supply of young things happy to get out of the Subcontinent and head to this paradise of the South Pacific.)

  23. A man goes for interview as a bus driver for the local council.. he does a written exam and a driving test and easily gets the job. They give him a smart uniform and tell him he starts 9.00 am Monday morning on bus route 36.
on Monday morning at 09:10 am the depot Inspector is doing his rounds and finds the new man still sitting in the bus..
    inspector says “What you playing at, this bus should have left 10 minutes ago!”. New driver says “ I can’t go, the ticket collector hasn’t turned up!”.
    inspector explains “ on these modern buses you collect the fares as well”.
    So the new boy drives off on route 36, 4 hours later the Inspector is wondering where the bus has got to as it should have been back hours ago, so he drives around the route looking forward it, finds it laying on its side in a village pond and the driver is sat on a bench with his head in his hands sobbing in a terrible state…
    the Inspector asks “ What happened, how did you end up in the pond?”…
    driver replies with a distraught voice “I don’t know what happened… I went up stairs to collect some fares and next thing it crashed into the pond!”.

    A quick point about NZ’s inexorable increase in the size, reach and cost of government and a prediction for the future.

    Since 1984-90, I have many times had occasion to discuss the Labour reforms with people and how we’re going today compared with if they hadn’t happened.

    Very briefly, I am of the firm view that overall they had a positive effect and that, contrary to some New Zealanders views, they were a necessary antidote to the decades of protectionism, subsidisation, inefficiency, cementing of privilege, government control, excessive regulation and legislation that had been built up by successive over the preceding decades.

    Some New Zealanders ‘blame’ Roger Douglas for the disruption and pain that followed the reforms and many subsequent Labour politicians have, hypocritically in my view, disavowed the reforms while simultaneously doing little or nothing to reverse them. They know we’re better off now but they think they improve their electoral chances by lying and saying the opposite.

    If blame is to be accorded for the pain we went through I am of the firm view that it lies squarely with the politicians, unions, industry leaders, crony-capitalists and others who, over decades, actively built the goddam mess that Labour inherited in 1984.

    Roger Douglas, and his mates, was the doctor not the disease.

    Everywhere I now look I see the same thing happening all over again. History is repeating.

    This current generation of Labour politicians, abetted by their Green fellow travellers, are re-establishing the same or similar protections, distortions, subsidisations, granting of privileges, controls and interventions that have no place in the economy that New Zealand deserves.

    An exaggeration Swifty, you ask?

    Well, let’s see.

    Who would have thought just a few years ago that Labour would take the great leap backwards to the 1970s and reintroduce tripartite wage bargaining. That in setting wages and conditions, company owners will now have to negotiate and reach a consensus with both government and unions and across their whole industry?

    Bye bye the free market.

    Who would have thought just a few years ago that Labour would now directly fund media companies. – a development no other political party is likely to challenge in fear of a wide-spread media backlash (proving the conflict of interest that the funding creates)?

    Who would have thought that the government would have expanded it’s reach, scope and size so massively that for the first time in our country’s history central government spending is now more than 50% of our GDP?

    Who would have just a few years ago forseen the explosion in the numbers of Ministries, NGOs, working groups and consultation bodies that we’ve seen?

    Who would have foreseen that the government would bring in rules requiring that companies tendering for government work must have ‘diversity and inclusion plans and officers’, and demonstrate their success at implementing same or they won’t get a sniff of any work on offer? These companies might have the best products or services and at the best price in the world but these will be denied to New Zealanders because the companies fell short on diversity and inclusion indoctrination.

    On the social side, who would have thought even 5-10 years ago that we would be facing a majority government hell-bent it seems on criminalising New Zealanders speaking with each other about things a similar period in the past would be absolutely normal and healthy conversations?

    Who would have thought an organisation as august as our Human Rights Commission in launching an enquiry into an apparent racial pay gap and before their investigations have even started claiming that not only does it exist but that the cause is racial discrimination by European-New Zealanders and that they are determined to stamp it out?

    I could go on and on.

    This mission creep by our government, this endless enlargement of government meddling in our lives; law, rule and regulation-making to dictate how we live our lives; this relentless call by politicians and others for the government to increase it’s number, breadth and depth of its functions, I say will end in tears.

    I don’t know when; it maybe 10, 15 or 20 years away but there will come a correction. I hope there will be a correction. And when that ‘corrector’ comes let’s do the honest thing and not blame him or her for the pain that comes – let’s reserve our blame, anger and opprobrium for the politicians, unions, do-gooders, media and crony-capitalists of TODAY; the ones who actively created the conditions for the correction to be required.

    Ingredients:
    Mince
    2 Eggs
    Finely chopped onion (optional)
    Chutney (optional)
    Papadums (optional)
    Rice
    1 Jar Patak’s brand “Vindaloo” (warning – contains very hot chilli – not for the feint-hearted)

    Method:
    Blend the mince, 2 eggs and optional onion and shape into rissoles. (Alternatively purchase pre-formed.)
    Start to fry the rissoles in a frying pan. Add the Patak’s Vindaloo.
    Cook the rice while the rissoles cook in the sauce.

    SERVE with rice and optional papadums and chutney.

    ENJOY.

    If you thought Perth’s bizarre five-day lockdown over a single person, who wasn’t sick and infected no one else, was strange, then Victoria’s statewide third lockdown of 6.6 million people is so freakish it raises a worrying possibility.

    For three German and Spanish economists, it’s time to ask this question: have we forgotten the rationality that’s meant to define policymaking in advanced liberal democracies? Their new research paper, COVID-19 and the Political Economy of Mass Hysteria, lays out how our biological tendency to overreact coupled with a social and mass media that profit from panic, plus powerful welfare states, make mass psychosis likely, and hard to reverse.

    “Governments have prohibited activities that reduce fear and anxiety, such as sports and socialising, thereby contributing to anxiety and psychological strain,” one of the authors, Philipp Bagus, told The Australian.

    “They have instilled fear in the general public to achieve political goals, exploiting the negativity bias of the human brain,” he said, revealing how a leaked German government paper last year recommended scaring people to ensure compliance with health advice. “Politicians have an incentive to overshoot the mark in their responses to a threat because they are largely exempt from the risk of possible wrong decisions and their costs, which they pass on to others,” Bagus added.
