  3. Facebook has decided to reverse its sweeping ban on news content in Australia after the tech giant and the federal government agreed to amendments to the impending media payment law.

    Last week, Facebook made good on a threat to pull news content from its platform in response to the Australian government’s News Media Bargaining Code.

    However, Facebook decided to execute its “nuclear option,” surprising government ministers with its news ban.

    The ban removed all news-related content from its platform in Australia and prevented users from sharing it.

    The ban caused major disruption across Australia with the accounts of several non-media Facebook pages, including non-profit organisations, unions, businesses, emergency services, the weather bureau, and government departments.

    Traffic to Australian news sites also took a tumble, with an estimated 16 percent drop in web visitation once the ban set in.

    • This is an interesting twist on what happened. I look at it that FB backed down because they could see the Australian’s strong stand could repeat all over the world.
      For example the fact that the Met Office page was taken down should not have mattered , they have their own website with the same information. Places like the Met Office just had FB pages as another way to spread the information, it is not their primary outlet (at least I hope it was not their main way to give information)

    Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court threw out Trump’s request to place a lower court ruling on hold that directs his accounting firm, Mazars USA, to comply with a subpoena that would turn over his tax records and financial documents to a grand jury convened by Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance.
    The former president sent out this full statement via email on Monday afternoon:

    “This investigation is a continuation of the greatest political Witch Hunt in the history of our Country, whether it was the never ending $32 million Mueller hoax, which already investigated everything that could possibly be investigated, ‘Russia Russia Russia,’ where there was a finding of ‘No Collusion,’ or two ridiculous ‘Crazy Nancy’ inspired impeachment attempts where I was found NOT GUILTY.   21. JAG should be culpable for cancelling the upgrade of that road. We drove it last weekend and it is appallingly bad for SH 1. JAG stopping the. building of a new motorway has not lowered the number of vehicles, it has just caused delays, frustration and plenty of accidents and deaths that could have been reduced if there was decent roading.     • Schools are safe. We know that cause Hipkins said so. All other large gatherings of people are not safe, even if its a small gathering on public transport so masks are needed there. But is perfectly safe for 25 kids to spend 6 hours together in rooms with no air circulation about a metre from one another. They also hug, share food and drink, ( and cigarettes) use common computer key boards and mice, touch desks and door handles, and generally do everything the rest of us are told not to, all the time. But, schools are safe. Interestingly the Papatoetoe spread is probably through he school kids doing this, but being safe. So it will be Ok. Hipkins and Cindy said they are not worried, as the cases are all linked, so even if it spreads, we’ll rest easy knowing where it came from.

  39. The Reserve Bank is forecasting that house price inflation will rise above 22% by the middle of this year before easing.

    The forecast is contained in the release of supporting material for the RBNZ’s latest Monetary Policy Statement.

    The forecasts, prepared by RBNZ and CoreLogic have changed markedly in the latest MPS compared with the last one in November, reflecting how fast actual prices have risen (between January last year and January this year they rose just over 19%, according to the Real Estate Institute).

    In the November forecasts the RBNZ/CoreLogic were forecasting house price inflation of just 7.9% for the year to June. Now the forecast is 22.4%.

    BUT, we should not be forced to live in fear.
    We went from being a free nation to being told we:
    🚫 couldn’t go to school
    🚫 couldn’t go to church
    🚫 couldn’t go to our grandma’s house
    🚫 couldn’t pay respects to a loved one through a funeral
    🚫 couldn’t leave our homes
    …and when we were allowed to do these things, we were told:
    📢 how long we could be there
    📢 how far apart we have to be
    📢 which direction to walk
    📢 what to wear
    📢 what we can buy/not buy
    📢 where we could shop/not shop
    📢 whether we could sing/worship/take communion
    📢 what time we had to be home
    Yes, our health matters.
    But you know what else matters?
    ✅ Family.
    ✅ Friends.
    ✅ Church.
    ✅ School.
    ✅ Sporting events.
    ✅ Family vacations.
    ✅ Neighborhood BBQs.
    ✅ Life.
    ✅ Fitness.
    ✅ Hugs.
    ✅ visiting the hospitalized
    Etc..etc…
    💔 One day, you’ll hug your grandma, mom, dad, or brother for the last time.
    💔 One day, your best friend will cry on your shoulder for the last time.
    💔 One day, your child will play their last ball game.
    💔 One day, they’ll have their last day of school.
