UK wind farms are being paid billions to switch off and not produce energy, with Britain’s largest wind farm paid to sit idle 71% of the time.
It’s called “curtailment”.
Wind farms are built in places with no grid capacity to carry the power. Regulators then pay them for the electricity they ‘would’ have generated.
Originally meant as a short-term fix, it’s now a business model. Many companies make more money by not generating power than by selling it.
And the insanity doesn’t stop there.
Often the same companies that own the idle wind farms also own the gas plants paid to fill the gap.
So they win on both sides of the equation.
This grotesque system drives up bills, wastes resources, and exposes just how broken the UK’s green energy regulations really are.

Calls are growing for the Government to pay rates on Crown land, with the Labour Party considering the idea as mayors step up pressure for reform.
Currently, much of the property owned by central Government, such as schools and hospitals, is exempt from paying rates.
The law has long been an irritation for those in local government, with estimates suggesting cash-strapped councils are missing out on more than $200 million annually due to the exemption.
Last week, Wellington Mayor Andrew Little announced he would lobby for changes to the Local Government Act to repeal the measure as part of his council’s triennium plan.
It follows Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown saying the Government is getting a “free ride”, with Auckland Council estimating $40m in foregone takings.
Act leader David Seymour has long called for the Government to pay its share, a view he still holds “as a matter of basic fairness to local ratepayers”.
“Where Crown agencies own significant land and buildings, they should contribute to local infrastructure and services just like everyone else,” Seymour said in a statement.
“These facilities often compete alongside private organisations and ratepayers effectively subsidise the Crown’s footprint in their communities,” he said.
Now the Labour Party is mulling the idea, with local government spokesman Tangi Utikere saying the party will be considering campaigning on a change to the current rules.
“It’s an issue that has been raised many times, alongside a few other options. I can understand why, given the tight constraints that councils are being forced to operate under,” Utikere told the Herald.
“Given that it has been raised with me alongside of a number of other revenue options and the like, naturally we will be considering that,” he said.

The Future for Local Government report, commissioned in 2021 by then Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta, recommended the Government pay rates on Crown property.
The review’s findings and recommendations were rejected by Simeon Brown in 2024, with the then Local Government Minister saying the review had become distracted by ideological issues.
Maybe they could make the Maori land owners also pay rates. It’s not that they are exempt, it’s just if they don’t pay, unlike everyone else, they can’t sell the property to pay the arrears.
Of course Mahuta would say this.

“The Royal Commission has also confirmed that unredacted Cabinet papers reveal the Ministry of Health warned Hipkins the Auckland boundary was unnecessary and impractical and should be lifted. Despite that advice, he kept it in place for another 32 days over the Christmas and New Year period and never told the public.
“He knew that advice and chose to ignore it, leaving businesses shut, families separated, and people pushed past their limits for no public health reason.
“Put simply, Aucklanders were asked to sacrifice more than they needed to, and they were never told the full story.
“But the consequences didn’t stop when the lockdowns ended. Labour paired these extended restrictions with huge government spending that New Zealanders are still paying for today.”
Mr Brown says Labour ignored repeated warnings about the scale and effectiveness of its spending, with the economic consequences still being felt.
“Treasury told Labour from the beginning that COVID-19 spending needed to be timely, temporary, and targeted. Labour ignored that advice.
“The result was a $60 billion COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund across 821 programmes, around half of which had little or nothing to do with the pandemic.
“The Royal Commission found Labour’s highly stimulatory fiscal and monetary policies drove house prices to unsustainable levels and fuelled inflation.
“That’s why families today are dealing with higher mortgages, higher rents, and higher grocery bills. Many households are still paying the price for decisions Labour made during the pandemic.”
The Royal Commission found:
“It makes sense now why Chris Hipkins refused to front publicly at the Commission’s hearings.
“He owes an explanation to every Aucklander who endured a lockdown that went on longer than it needed to, and to every family still feeling the squeeze from Labour’s economic decisions.
“National has spent two years making the tough calls needed to repair Labour’s damage. The last thing New Zealand can afford is a Labour-Greens-Te Pāti Māori coalition with no fresh ideas and no lessons learned from its own failures.”

Interesting that the herald has missed the report so far but stuff managed to report what they consider the truth.
The Government’s broad approach to vaccines was solid and based in evidence
The report noted that several submitters were concerned the development of Covid-19 vaccines was rushed, and important safeguards were abandoned.
However, on balance, the Government’s decision to adopt a vaccine strategy early on in the pandemic was “appropriate, and consistent with overwhelming scientific advice,” the Commission found. They concluded that decision-makers “carefully balanced the benefits of Covid-19 vaccines … against any potential risks.”
The Commission went on to review MedSafe’s process of approving the vaccines – and praised it.
“Medsafe was agile and adaptive in its regulation of Covid-19 vaccines during the pandemic. This allowed rapid approval of a vaccine without taking shortcuts.”
The question is who bribed them with what or who coerced them into changing their original decisions?

Once the vaccines were being used, and rare but serious side effects – like myocarditis – were occurring, the Commission noted that “decision-makers took extensive steps to mitigate risks”, and strengthened systems for monitoring their safety.
On the vaccine mistrust that came to dominate, the Commission found that “declining levels of trust and social cohesion cannot be solely attributed to Covid-19, or the response. Other issues undoubtedly contributed.
In New Zealand, as elsewhere, misinformation and disinformation affected several areas of the response, particularly the vaccination campaign and lockdowns.”
The report noted that the Government followed established communications procedures and could not have foreseen the extent to which anti-vaccine sentiment would take hold.

New Zealand First pushed for this covid inquiry, and pushed to scrap the sham original inquiry, to get some facts and accountability for the impacts the mandates, lockdowns, and vaccines had on kiwis.
We were the only party to fully campaign on this issue and to walk around with the protesters at parliament – when no other party in parliament would.
We ‘agreed to disagree’ when this inquiry was announced because we didn’t think it went far enough – nor did we think the original sham inquiry should continue. But even this inadequate report today has proven that we were right to challenge the Labour government on these issues – they tried to call people “cookers”, the “river of filth”, and that we were all “going down a rabbit hole”.
The report brings questions that need to be answered by Hipkins and Verrall and all those other former ministers.
They cannot brush this off.
It outlines that clear advice from officials was ignored – in particular the advice about the risks of mandating the vaccine for children and the increased risk of myocarditis.
The report finds that the failure of the Labour government to provide advice to the public about the risks of the two doses for children was “significant”. Not only did they not properly advise the public of those risks, they then mandated the two doses of the vaccine.
Those risks, forced under mandate, directly affected over a hundred thousand children aged between 12-17 years old. This cannot be ignored.
The report also shows that the Auckland lockdown went on far too long – and Labour knew it.
It shows those Labour ministers did not provide a complete assessment to Cabinet of the lockdown measures against economic, social, and educational outcomes.
What is worse, is that the employment and wage scarring impacts of the mandates were significant. The Labour government made no attempt to monitor these impacts and the devastating results that would come to our country.
These mandates and lockdowns cost thousands of jobs and had a devastating effect on our economy and people’s health and livelihoods – all of which were avoidable.
It is any wonder those Labour ministers didn’t want to front publicly to give evidence.

European refineries slowed by not getting Russian sweet crude which was a constant, sort of specialized on that. and so did not need adjustments for the different shipments.

Refineries in the Middle East, getting hit, sort of left, right & centre.
Australia shutting down refineries, but paid to keep 1 chugging along.
The supposed word is that one is supposed to have super large refineries to have the scale to keep the cost low.

Marsden Point was set up to take pretty much heavy crude oil, which would probably work ok with the Venezuela very heavy crude.
A bonus is getting good tarseal for our roads too.

Crude oil from NZ’s wells was always sent to Australia for refining. It was referred to as light sweet (low sulpur) crude & not compatible with the Marsden Point refinery built to process ‘medium sour’.
On a tangent but I can vaguely recall, while on a family camping holiday in the Taranaki, watching an oil derrick operating on New Plymouth’s beachfront. That would have been about 1956.

• 11,000 teachers for the next 30 years

• Huge nationwide school rebuild programmes
• Billions in roads, rail and infrastructure

With the average dental check-up around $100, $30 billion would fund roughly 300 million dentist visits.
That’s basically every New Zealander going to the dentist every year for the next 50 years.
Instead, it sat in a giant pot labelled “Covid funding” and went…. Somewhere else….where? No one seems to really know.
Hard not to wonder what New Zealand might look like today if even a fraction of that had been spent somewhere it’s actually needed.
