Admittedly, I use it more to go after media hypocrisy.
This issue boils down to one thing. Is Hipkins Trustworthy. I have always maintained that he and truth are not closely related. He has lied about so many things. In fact if Hipkins says its “white”, its probably black, and he is shagging it. Nobody was forced to take the vaccine. Technically nobody held anyone down and shoved needles into their arms, but….You lost your job, your ability to live in society . He lied by omission by not taking the advice about not vaxing under 17s. He lied about the safety of the vaccine and its effectiveness. He probably lied to his ex wife on a range of issues.. Resources Minister Shane Jones unveils $50m fund for geothermal projectsProjects exploring potential new geothermal power station sites in the Bay of Plenty will receive a $20 million Government loan.
Regional Development and Resources Minister Shane Jones announced the loan at an event in Rotorua yesterday, as well as a $3m grant to drill three exploratory wells in Whakatāne.
The three projects are the first to gain support from a $50m fund ringfenced in the Regional Infrastructure Fund for developing geothermal projects.
Jones announced the new fund as he launched New Zealand’s geothermal strategy, From the Ground Up, at the Sir Howard Morrison Centre event.
A draft strategy launched last year said “supercritical” geothermal technology, involving drilling deeper into the earth’s crust, could offer up to three times more energy than current geothermal energy.
In 2024, $60m was ring-fenced from the Regional Infrastructure Fund for this, and the Government & Todd Energy were the preferred lead contractor to drill New Zealand’s first exploratory “superhot” geothermal well near Taupō.
In his Rotorua speech, Jones said the strategy was about doubling geothermal energy’s contribution to electricity and providing an energy source for manufacturing by 2040.
The $50m fund would focus on “small-to-medium projects that provide practical outcomes” and enable landowners with geothermal potential to make that potential available.
Jones said the fund would allow the Bay of Plenty to “watch the expansion of energy production”.
Specialist renewable energy developer Eastland Generation‘s Taumanu and Kopura geothermal projects near Rotomā and Kawerau had been approved for up to $20m.
Jones said this would enable underground surveys, exploration and well drilling.
The work could confirm whether the resource was “strong enough to stand intense use”, capable of being monetised, and if landowners and investors were capable of standing up the project.
Jones said the funding would be matched by another $20m in co-investment from Eastland Generation.

Regarding the Whakatāne exploratory wells, Jones said there was “energy of a lower heat” in the area, capable of being exploited and meeting the costs of manufacturing power.
The Whakatāne Geothermal Temperature Gradient Well Programme is a project run by the University of Auckland through the Geothermal Institute.
Jones said the data would be made public to the benefit of the manufacturing sector.
“The Crown has borne the cost and then they can seek to exploit it, turn it into a form of energy, and start to regrow manufacturing in this part of New Zealand.”
Jones told media it would be “several years” before the two Eastland Generation projects could start generating electricity.
“We need to ensure that any additional exploitation of our geothermal resource does not undermine the sustainability of the resource.”
An Eastland Generation statement said its projects near Rotomā and Kawerau “have the potential to be small- to medium-sized geothermal power stations”.
Chief executive Alice Pettigrew described the loans – up to $10m for each project – as “visionary” and said they would allow the sites’ geothermal resources to start being assessed.
“Our team is beginning the next stage of the Taumanu and Kopura projects alongside the landowners. Together, we aim to realise the potential of the resource below their whenua.”
The company recently completed its fourth geothermal power plant, the 49MW TOPP2, on the Kawerau Geothermal Reservoir.

In his speech, Rotorua MP Todd McClay said when energy was of scarce availability and prices increased, “our ability to be self-sufficient and have energy security is paramount for all New Zealanders”.
“We are lucky … to have an abundance of energy below us in the ground.”
McClay said the strategy was “extremely important” and cited a visit to Rotorua Primary School, which had solar panels.
“I mentioned to them it was not that many years ago actually, they used heat from geothermal here in the school to heat the classrooms for all the kids.”
( The locals stopped that, then had gysers popping up all over the place.)
He said cost and other challenges meant this was no longer possible.
“Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every single school in Rotorua had the kids were warm in winter, and the classes were heated with the geothermal energy?”
He said he believed that was “[no] longer out of the question”.
Expansion of Ngā Tamariki Geothermal Station completed
Jones, also the Associate Minister of Energy, officially opened the new generation unit at Mercury’s Ngā Tamariki Geothermal Station in Reporoa near Taupō on Tuesday.
The $220m expansion involved adding the station’s fifth electricity generation unit. Construction started in early 2024.
A Mercury statement said it lifted the station’s annual average generation output to about 1120GWh, enough to power the equivalent of all residential homes in Christchurch.

Mercury had also drilled two new geothermal wells – one to provide additional steam supply for the new unit and the second for the injection of geothermal fluid to support the sustainability of the reservoir.
Chief executive Stew Hamilton said adding more renewable energy was key for meeting future demand growth, building resilience and ultimately helping with energy affordability.
Mercury was also working with the Government on its investigation into supercritical geothermal energy, he said.

A Kiwi MMA fighter who died after attending the country’s biggest music festival took his own life while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Coroner Meenal Duggal has confirmed Hakaraia Wilson’s death in Gisborne on the morning of January 1, 2025, was not suspicious and was instead self-inflicted.
The 26-year-old had been staying at a friend’s house while attending the Rhythm & Vines music festival at the end of 2024.
According to a just-released coroner’s report, toxicology analysis found the amateur fighter was under the influence of alcohol. Cocaine and MDMA were also detected in his blood.

New Zealand formally rejects proposed amendments to IHR
The Government has rejected the proposed amendments to the WHO’s International Health Regulations, ending months of public debate over the potential impact of the changes. The Ministry of Health website states that, “Adoption of the IHR amendments by the World Health Assembly was not a legally binding step for member countries, including New Zealand. New Zealand has decided to reject the 2024 amendments to the IHR, and communicated this to the Director-General of the World Health Organisation on 16 March 2026”.
Many members of the public and advocacy groups argued the amendments could affect national sovereignty, individual rights and the country’s control over public health responses. NZ First Leader Winston Peters said: “We made a promise to put the national interests of New Zealanders first, to maintain our sovereign decision making, and to push back on globalist bureaucrats, and we have kept that promise”. RCR had urged greater scrutiny of the proposals through interviews, analysis and discussions, encouraging citizens to engage with their elected representatives.
Voices For Freedom’s Katie Ashby-Koppens said if the amendments had gone through, New Zealand would have set up domestic systems aligned with WHO frameworks, including a national authority responsible for implementing WHO recommendations and reporting back internationally.
“They also extended into areas like ‘risk communication’, digital health documentation aligned with WHO standards, broader border measures and the sharing of personal health information”, she said. We’re in the same predicament. Currently in Nelson and need to travel back to Dunedin with our Jayco. They are heavy and really get through the fuel travelling through the Passes. Our pension doesn’t cover it. So more dipping into savings.
The bright side is that they’re fairly well constructed compared with the Yank, British & continental alternatives. Ours travels at about 3 tons* but at least it gets there in one piece.

I stated yesterday that the Chris Hipkins scandal would come down to a credibility contest.
Most political executions in NZ are not initially fatal, but as the politician is snared in the trap they thrash around and often do themselves far more damage.
In less than 24 hours the Labour leader is now nursing self inflicted wounds.
Here’s what he said at his news conference yesterday:
“In the time that I’ve been in politics, I’ve made a very conscious effort to keep my private life private and to keep my family out of the spotlight, particularly my children. You won’t find photos of my kids anywhere on social media, you won’t find me talking about them beyond generic references to being a parent anywhere in public, I’ve made a real effort based on a conscious decision I made when I first got into politics, that I would keep my private life, private from my work, and I intend to stick with that. I’m aware that Jade has made some allegations or some references in the recent Facebook post, I reject her, I reject the allegations that she’s made and the characterization of those events.”
It didn’t take long for the Internet to fact check, and what emerged is that Hipkins appears to be using women’s magazines to portray a warm, family man image to Labour’s core constituency – women.
In doing so he has indeed posted clips of his kids to social media (without obscuring faces – I have done that in recognisable shots), and curated an image of the trusty family guy next door.
In that context, and after a barrage of magazine covers in recent months boasting of his family relatability, it’s perhaps more understandable why ex wife Jade Paul pushed the nuclear button. It appears she firmly believes he’s a “hypochris”.
The bigger problem for Hipkins is that his cast iron assurances to the media that he has not used his family for political purposes crumbled within hours, and if he could make that assurance with a straight face and emotion and be proven wrong, what does that say about the credibility of his other denials?
New Zealand is not ultimately electing Hipkins on the strength of his parenting skills, and we all understand about the turbulence of relationship breakups. There’s two sides. But where there’s what some might see as a cynical pitch to position on family values, and there’s evidence that things may not be as peachy and that your statements are factually misleading, that goes to credibility.
Just like I warned yesterday.
Can Hipkins be trusted in what he says?
Coming just a week after the Royal Commission on Covid revealed advice had been prepared on vax safety concerns for children – and Hipkins insists he was never told, his latest apparent credibility failure will be making swing voters think twice, I suspect.

Has cyber bullying dropped? doubt it. Kids are only “off” their phones from 0845 to 315. Plenty of time before and after that to stick the cyber knife in. Only thing that would work is completely removing phones from kids. and that won’t happen.
