  1. Good morning fellow followers of this wonderful site, it is where I get all the news of the day. As a non watcher of the daily indoctrination from the liebour party from any other source, if I was not reading this I’d have not much idea as to what was happening around the place. Happy weekend. I so hope no one gets ‘The Corona’ this weekend//

Either way, he’s going to be in a foul mood, so please be gentle with him 😃

    • So this comment from Bob Jones probably won’t help then:

“Where the government has hugely erred is saying this deductibility rule will also apply to all existing residential landlords within four years. That’s dumb (and dishonest) on a number of counts.

First, the hundreds of thousands of current residential rentals will be forced to go on the market.

That will crash all house values which is not something the two thirds of New Zealander’s owning their homes will rejoice over. In other words a stupid political move.”

      • Maybe that’s the intention. I don’t own any property other than our own home but am unhappy about property values increasing at the current rate. I am happy for the value of my home to drop by as much as it has risen over the past few years. This would be welcome relief for many young people but bad news for those who only recently managed to buy their first home.

Property values going up at the current rate is unsustainable and can only result in huge problems.

  3. Even with fifteen Maori MP’s five Cabinet Ministersand the mouth of all mouths Willy Jackson Labour can’t find a way to help find jobs for their unemployed.
On going $50 million Training scheme creates four new Maori jobs in eight months.
The Government has been accused of working at a glacial pace on fixing Maori Unemployment as a ongoing $50 million training scheme has created just four new Maori jobs in eight months.
The Maori Trades and training funds a contestable Grant initiative from Covid-19 Response and Recovery package in Budget 2020, proposals must be by- Maori for Maori aiming to up skill participants and provide ” meaningful opportunities into employment”.
The proposals should be able to get up and running quickly to respond to the impact of Covid-19, so far $11.4 million has been committed to approved projects with $1.8 million paid out.
    https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/124666099/50-million-mori-trades-and-training-fund-produces-four-jobs-so-far-since-june
According to the latest Household Labour Survey over three quarters since the start of the impact of Covid-19 about 8100 Maori have been displaced or lost their jobs.

  4. What a holy mess. Hand break slammed on hundreds of new build rentals. Investors need clarity!!

    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2021/03/spooked-investors-developers-hitting-pause-on-housing-projects-over-government-changes.html

But the policy is clear as mud.

The factsheets say the removal of interest deductibility will apply to all investment properties other than potentially new-builds – purchased after 27 March – that’s on Saturday.

No one knows which side of the line in the sand new houses sit on.

“We need to understand what is a new-build, for how long are you exempt – is this forever? Is it only for part of the time or in the future are they going to change the rules again?” said Wheeler.

“The worst thing you want to do if you’re trying to do new-builds in New Zealand is create uncertainty for people who want to go out, invest their money and take on the risk,” he told Newshub.

    • Same fuckup as their rushed gun laws/bans, zero clarity and 100% uncertainty lead many gunowners to hock off their firearms to the highest bidder leading to massive problems now.

Every day the govt stalls on clarity of the new rules (or reversing their dumb decicion) equals another few families homeless and in a motel.

This is yet another glaring example of rushed unthoughtout crap made on the fly, similar to the aussie travel bubble theyve spent months blaming others (aus govt and housing investors) instead of researching and making a solid plan.

The idea of a canal between the Manukau and the Waitemata Harbours has been around since the early years of European settlement. While at one time there was widespread support for the idea, the rise of ‘militant Maorism’ might mean that as the the project will involve the mixing of ‘two waters’ and the associated ‘spiritual mingling’ it would now be virulently opposed . No doubt koha of a reasonable size paid to the appropriately-elevated members of the local tribes would however go some way towards settling their offended dignities…

  5. Peter Dunne’s latest article on Newsroom should provide talking points for prospective National voters. He pushes the theory that National, having abandoned pragmatism & getting re-elected as its guiding principles is overdue to find some new ones. The party of the rural conservatives & urban liberals has found another faction in bed with them in the form of evangelical Godbotherers determined to shape NZ’s morals to suit their Christian god.

    https://www.newsroom.co.nz/comment/national-needs-to-know-what-it-stands-for?utm_source=Friends+of+the+Newsroom&utm_campaign=21647282a1-Week+In+Review+27.3.21&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_71de5c4b35-21647282a1-97939384

I personally see it as the end of National where its inner liberal-conservative tensions kept it to a middle path. The original tenets required the party “to safeguard individual rights” which is the antithesis of religious busybodies who want the state to control the private lives of its citizens.

    What next?

  10. I hope someone is keeping track of govts purchasing of houses for poor doers?

I have an inkling theyre gunna ramp it up now that theyve reduced a bit of their competion, if they continue to buy up houses then it makes a mockery of the reasons why they have rampaged against landlords.

The only winners i see from the new rules is the govt, increased tax take and decreased competitors for them to purchase syate housing. Disgusting

  11. We used to call them ‘busy bodies’, then they became ‘NIMBYs’, then ‘protesters’ and now they are ‘activists’. Every which way you look at their legal challenge it will cost the ratepayer/taxpayer.

Auckland councillor Chris Darby says a legal challenge against the $1.4 billion Mill Road project by climate change advocates All Aboard Aotearoa is a sign of what’s to come.
    https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/climate-change-activists-legal-challenge-against-auckland-road-project-sign-things-come

The 21.5km proposed Mill Rd arterial route, which would provide an alternative road between Manukau and Drury, would run parallel to and east of State Highway 1. Construction was expected to start next year and be completed by 2028.

All Aboard Aotearoa is a coalition made up of Generation Zero, Lawyers for Climate Action, Bike Auckland, Women in Urbanism, Movement and Greenpeace and its stated goal is to decarbonise the country’s transport by 2030.

“This is the year we enforce it and hold the Government to account. The Government simply cannot say it is taking the climate emergency seriously and then fund roading projects like Mill Road,” Sacayan said.

    • If any of their court challenges are unsuccessfull they should be billed the full amount for not only legal costs but compensation for any construction delays, they should also be required to put up a hefty bond before any legal procedings to ensure they pay up after their loss.

        • A mates consent for a new venture is currently being challenged in environment court by a newly formed “society” group, it was obvious to the judge what they were up to and he wouldnt hear the case untill they stumped up with a significant bond to cover all costs in their almost garunteed lost. They crowdfunded for it, so many idiots donated money to their stupid self serving cause.

What happened to that group in wakamarina that tried to stop a broadifacoum aerial drop? From memory they got hit with heavy costs when they lost, guess theyre ones that folded and didnt pay.

Just dont allow cases from those society groups etc unless someone is personally liable, same goes gor faceless corporates they all abuse it toget away with the burden of liability

Over the last couple of decades any number of environmental protests and protesters have sourced their funding from, you guessed it , our bloody government.
Ask who funds the Environmental Defence Society, or even Friends of Nelson Haven?
Woke governments trying to be all things to all people.
Why should it be any different for Climate Change nutters, er idiots , no perhaps activists.

        • It’s mental.

The government simply needs to treat property like any other investment.

That means NOT artificially increasing the cost of the investment by subsidising the market with billions in debt.

Many property owners are not investors. They are speculators living on govt welfare to make their speculation pay off.

  14. C-19 Pfizer Reaction Interview Part 3 – 24/03/2021

Peter: “Had a follow up text from Jane”

Jane: “I meant to tell you of the actual reactions that I had.

I had very bad body aches, felt like my bones & internal organs were on fire for days. Chronic headaches, ongoing fatigue, a very bad cough, slow reaction, chills, fever, difficulty breathing, continued leg pain, body weakness & no strength.”

The reaction was acknowledged in hospital though they failed to record it on my notes. So it is only recorded by me with CARM. (Center For Reaction Monitoring).

No one has followed up with me to see if I’m okay.”

Peter: “She says she is not going to have the second (Pfizer jab) and she worries about her future as a consequence.”

  17. then this today.

Carter Holt Harvey cuts timber supplies to Mitre 10, Bunnings, ITM

Builders are at risk of going under as Mitre 10, Bunnings, and ITM face a dire shortage of building timber after Carter Holt Harvey’s decision to cut its supplies to the three companies because of accelerated house construction.

According to BusinessDesk, Carter Holt Harvey is unable to fulfill supply commitments to the companies, citing “critical supply issues” as demand for new houses spikes.

However, Carter Holt Harvey (CHH) had reportedly maintained its supply relationships with its biggest clients – Placemakers and Carter Building Supplies – industry insiders told BusinessDesk.

“This is a massive decision on CHH’s part and one that will have ramifications for years to come,” the memo said.

“We spend almost $34 million with CHH per annum so I know this will have a significant disruptive impact on many of your businesses.”

That’ll teach them. No wonder that Maori housing outfit we fund is buying ready made and is out bidding first home buyers.

    • Goldpine and placemakers have both told me in recent weeks to expect alot of empty slots on their shelves, big shortage in certain timber sizes and they likely wont return for many years.

The industry cant compete with carbon farming plantaitions and chinese hunger for logs, to compete one guy rekoned timber products would need to at least double. Cue even more expensive housing!

Its economic conditions index – which measures economic indicators like GDP, export volumes, inflation, debt and consumer and business confidence – is also down two per cent on the previous quarter.

BusinessNZ Chief Executive Kirk Hope said many firms were close to the edge.

“Our rate of growth is forecast to be modest until the border is properly reopened. Until then, we face prospects of a two-speed economy, with some sectors and regions growing while others struggle,” he said.

    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2021/03/act-judith-collins-on-attack-after-grant-robertson-s-latest-rent-comments.html

This shows the Deputy Prime Minister is remarkably out of touch with just how tough it is in the rental market.

National shadow treasurer Andrew Bayly also weighed in on Twitter.

“Not only has Grant Robertson created an uncertain environment for developers trying to build new houses (see TV3’s story last night), he is now upsetting the huge number of Mum & Dad investors with possible rent caps. This follows stricter tenancy laws. Why own a rental?” he wrote.

If we want to make things better for renters AND first home buyers the solution is simple – build more houses…

Contagions aren’t conducive to organising protests, nor are authoritarian regimes reluctant to use them to tighten the political screws. Nevertheless, Barrett, Chen, and Li show that whatever dampening effects a disease outbreak may have at first, it brings a “heightened risk of a major government crisis – an event that threatens to bring down the government and that typically occurs in the two years following a severe epidemic.”

  27. NZ.
Summary of an Official Information Request about Pfizer – 22/03/21

Q: What due diligence was taken to investigate Pfizer’s ethics as a company? Given that Pfizer has successfully been indicted and fined for fraud in the past, what changes to the management of the company were made that reassured you that Pfizer was no longer fraudulent?

A: Our due diligence focused on assessing the performance and delivery of Pfizer’s vaccine. We did not investigate Pfizer’s management team or its ethics as a company.

Q: Were you concerned that Pfizer were so wealthy that any damages caused by their product could simply be seen by the company as a “cost” against their eventual profit?

A: We are satisfied that Pfizer has not been reckless… Medsafe conducted an extensive review of the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, and granted provisional approval for its use on 3 February 2021.

Q: Can you please state the reasons as to why NZ Government indemnified Pfizer against
    damages?

A: Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment advised the Minister of Finance to grant an indemnity to Pfizer on the basis that doing so was in the public interest.

Q: What method will NZ government use to deal with harm caused by Pfizer Coronavirus or COVID-19 vaccines?

A: ACC can provide treatment and support for injuries caused by COVID-19 vaccination if the injury meets the criteria for a ‘treatment injury’.

As of 16 March 2021, MBIE is not aware of any deaths or permanent disabilities that were caused by Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine.

  28. 2 dead, eight others injured after shooting at Virginia Beach Oceanfront Friday night

Neudigate said police responded to an initial shooting at 20th Street and Atlantic Avenue. Dispatchers said the initial calls came in around 11:20 p.m. EST.
Neudigate said numerous shots were fired and eight people were injured.
As officers were actively working that scene, there were additional shots in the area of 20th Street and Pacific Avenue. That resulted in an “individual being confronted by a uniformed Virginia Beach police officer, resulting in a police intervention shooting.” That person was shot and killed, Neudigate said.
A second person who wasn’t part of the officer-involved shooting — and believed not to be a part of the original shooting incident either — was also shot and killed.
