        Interesting as that is our history in many ways. We lost men and had women left behind in the early days, then with the the first world war and then the second.
        In the early days if man got killed in the bush or on a farm he left behind family. They had to survive and often then next man down the track stayed and became the farmer with all the attachments.
        Maori were not isolated from this either. With all the wars and the taking of slaves and killing of the men many of the women were left without men.
        Nature abhors a vacuum so naturally enough thevacum gets filled.

      But, our Dads went to war to oppose supression of people.
      If we are to uphold that bastion of truth then we must uphold the right of people to go lawfully about their day.

      And sure we should respect those men and women but we should also be allowed to do that in our own way.

      Its a longtime since I bothered even though I grew up knowing so many who returned good and broken. Looking back I can see them more clearly now than I did then.
      Freedom to choose is important and coercing people to choose is not freedom to choose.

      I disagree with having to have days off to remember sky faries and Santa’s just as much as I disagree with having days off propping up the Treaty Fraud or the queens Birthday or some other provincial rubbish.
      People should be free to choose.

  27. Massive dairy operation goes into receivership

    Van Leeuwen Dairy Group, the large-scale dairy operation on whose farms Mycoplasma bovis was first detected in New Zealand in 2017, has gone into receivership.
    After being contacted by the Otago Daily Times this morning, Auckland-based Calibre Partners released a statement, confirming it was now in full control of the VLG business and assets in South Canterbury.

    VLG was founded by Aad and Wilma van Leeuwen and includes the world’s largest robotic dairy barn. In 2017, the van Leeuwens were on NBR’s Rich List, valued at $60 million.

    The couple arrived in New Zealand from the Netherlands in the early 1990s.

    Months after the first detection of M bovis in the Waimate district, it was revealed Southland was believed to be where the disease first took hold.

    Mohammed Fike Butt was given a life sentence today (April 23) for murdering Jason Llanwarne and injuring two men by driving at them in his car in Headingley.

    “There is compelling evidence of the defendant laughing at the time.

    “He was seemingly taking some sort of perverted sense of pleasure in what he was doing.”

    Butt then went to a takeaway and ordered himself a portion of cheesy chips moments after causing the fatal injuries.
    The court heard Butt carried out the attack to teach the three men “a lesson” during a dispute over drugs.

    Sentencing 32-year-old Butt, Mr Justice Jacobs said: “It was an act of savagery which showed no mercy.”

    • I find it odd that its ok for drivers/union refuse to work due to their demands on pay and conditions and yet its bad for the company to say sorry no work due to workers not accepting pay and conditions.

      Why do the courts not rule that the workers cant strike? Why the fuck are the courts even involved at all tbh, its between a company and its employees.
      Take it or leave it, those drivers are all free to resign and work somewhere else that will meet their demands no one is holding a gun to their head to stay and drive those buses.

  43. So there is going to be $190 million spent on cycleway along the foreshore out to Petone from the edge of the Wellington CBD.
    This project announced a couple of years ago for a cost of $70-$90 mill, then late last year it was $135 million. I got scoffed at on another site when I said it would end up north of $200 mill. Might have to re-evaluate and now say well north of $280 million.

    As our friend Maggy W said at the time –the irony of the climate change believing luvvies wanting to spend money on a cycleway along the foreshore when they fervently belive in sealevel rises. Also it is on a fault line.

    • Except that historically the foreshore that is there now didn’t exist as such prior to 1856. The earthquakes along there and out to the valley have tended to lift the land up and was the case with land in Mirimar and the basin reserve area. Water used to go through those places and indeed the basin was scoped out to be a shipping basin.
      So perhaps the nutters (and they are) are thinking that if the land rises then they will be able to ride their bikes out of Wellington to the valley for their supplies.
      There is a picture of that shore front that I have showing the passage was not really possible. Indeed when the Aurora arrived the valley was still much of a swamp and people decided to leave there and go to Wellington instead, as it was above the water level.

    • Agree V2. As a kid in the fifties & sixties I saw many of these men. In some ways the physically disabled were the lucky ones as people could recognise & make allowances for their disabilities.

      Less so those who never recovered from the effects war, death & danger had on their psyches. There were no drugs to numb the pain & if they turned to their GP they would be told to pull themselves together or have a few drinks & try to forget.

      Many took that advice. Bars full of them.

    I was just reading here that the
