There are many options to obtain or create energy. Water in dams, for example.
The basic premise for all this is that you cannot make or destroy matter. You can change its form, thus creating energy.
Our energy supplier is infact the sun. Everything comes from the suns contribution, be it oil, fusion, solar, storms, whatever.
Its how you harness the energy that matters, and there are different solutions for different places. These days, no one would build a dam on the Pacific Islands; they install solar, which works and is local.
Here in NZ, currently dairy farms are installing as fast as installers can add them, there’s queue.
Why, because it makes sense economically and from an energy security point of view. You still need to milk even if the tanker can’t get through or the power lines are down.
So we cannot discount any method. It’s a matter of the investment in science and innovation and the final cost.
It’s also about reducing your energy use.
If you have a decent-sized home energy bill, then that’s the place to start. I hear people saying it’s costing them $800- $1000 a month. $3.00 a day line charges or more.
Well, start with your hot water.
Put in a heat pump hot water system. There are several around. Rinnai, I know, have one, and your plumber possibly has more options.
We have had one at work for about 12 years and a second one for about 5 years. We are about to install a big bugger.
I have a couple of high-use units to sort then onto solar and feed the grid. We have a reasonably sized roof to do that with. Lots of big commercials are doing that.
Lots of work in that industry.
They aren’t milking on solar at 4 in the morning but it is a good way to help keep the milk cold during the day for the night pickup.

They are fitted with batteries that will do just that.

just an hour ago my mate showed me his solar setup for a workers camp theyve build to house workers for a windfarm being built.
90kw battery, was the size of maybe 2 chest freezers stacked ontop of each other.
40kw of panels and 50kva backup generator… 120k all up, the same in nz would be double, probs triple. kiwis get screwed.
Solar has some use, but it is no silver bullet. Ask the Australians who have to occasionally pay to feed their electricity into the grid. And unless you got huge storage batteries often the sun is shining when peak demand is on… JoNova has lots on this.

The payback on our solar system was 6-1/2 years and now making a profit. This is a no-brainer. Some banks are offering zero interest or low interest loans for solar installations if you can’t afford to pay outright.

Why then are Councils ignoring the Court’s ruling? Too many local authorities are placing burdens on ratepayers by claiming to provide specific items for Maori under the provisions of the Treaty, which is totally wrong!

The House of Commons just delivered a major boost to Alberta independence efforts. In heated exchanges this week, Bloc Quebecois MP Mario Simard pressed the Liberal government on the rules for any future referendum. Ottawa cannot rig the game with higher thresholds or endless delays. A simple majority wins.
Simard stood firm: “Democracy means 50 percent votes plus one. That is the rule wherever democracy exists.” He slammed any federal interference as an attack on self-determination. “The difference between a democracy and an anti-republic is precisely when government interferes with the democratic choice of its citizens.” He warned that changing the rules assaults Quebec’s own Bill 99, which upholds the 50 percent plus one standard and has survived court challenges.
Liberal Parliamentary Secretary Patricia Lattanzio responded directly, confirming the standard. “There needs a majority 50 percent plus one. There’s laws around it that need respect.” Later she doubled down: “Clarity Act, 50 percent plus one. We do not have the intention to go against that law which is very, very clear. We believe in democracy.”
This is a direct hit against Ottawa’s usual tricks. The Clarity Act gives the Commons a say on clarity, but lawmakers just admitted the baseline is a simple majority, not some super-majority dreamed up to keep Alberta chained. Alberta patriots gathered over 300,000 signatures to force the question. With Premier Danielle Smith ready to act, a vote could come as soon as October 2026.
Federally imposed roadblocks are crumbling. Albertans built this province with hard work, oil, gas, and grit. They send far more to Ottawa than they get back while watching their wealth fund endless waste, carbon taxes, and policies that punish energy producers. Enough is enough.
A clear 50 percent plus one vote will send an unmistakable message: Alberta decides its own future. The rest of Canada can watch as a free and prosperous Alberta rises. No more subsidizing failure. No more begging for fair treatment. Time to take control.

If the Government is now rightly winding back “Fees-Free” because it costs roughly $350 million a year and fails to deliver meaningful outcomes, then the same discipline should apply elsewhere. The Māori Language Act 1987 is associated with roughly $100 million a year in government spending on te reo Māori initiatives, which over time likely adds up to something in the order of a billion dollars or more in taxpayer funds—enough that it’s reasonable to question whether this, too, remains a justified long-term use of public money, or whether it should be reconsidered, even repealed, in the broader effort to rein in persistent state spending.
The End of the Fees-Free Mistake. The so-called ‘Fees-Free’ policy was one of the most wasteful and ineffective ways of helping people that the then Labour-New Zealand First Government put in place. It cost taxpayers nearly $350 million per year, but did nothing to help disadvantaged students access an education.
Because the Government has been running a deficit for as long as it existed, the money to fund it was borrowed -a debt for future taxpayers. It reduced some students’ loans, but the same students graduated into a country with more Government debt, including extra debt from tire-kickers who took the free year and never finished their course.
ACT opposed Fees Free from the beginning. We were right then and we’re proud it’s going now. Tertiary education is still subsidised at around 70 per cent, when you include subsidies to institutions and interest write-offs on loans. If someone doesn’t want to carry the other 30 per cent, perhaps taxpayers shouldn’t carry the other 70, we said.
Our country has a problem with incomes and the cost of living. That needs to be addressed with innovation and investment to create higher paying jobs. There is no other way. Those who say they can just borrow a bit more, or tax someone else, are not telling the whole story. They’re telling you just enough to (they hope) get elected for another three years of managed decline.
We came into Government to cut wasteful spending so the country has a sustainable future. Today’s announcement by the Finance Minister confirms we are headed in the right direction.
Tertiary education is an investment in their (hoped for) ability to earn a higher income. If attending uni doesn’t cost them personally it attracts those with less ability to achieve success.
Personal cost motivates the struggle and perseverance to succeed.

Iran is moving to seize control of seven critical undersea internet cables running through the Strait of Hormuz, forcing foreign operators to beg for permits, cough up transit fees, and submit to Iranian law while handing all maintenance over to local regime-tied firms.
These cables carry 15 to 20 percent of global internet and financial traffic linking Europe, the Gulf, and Asia. Gulf states depend on them for over 90 percent of their connectivity, banking, and cloud services. Iran, by contrast, routes less than 40 percent through them and leans on overland backups through Turkey.
This latest power play follows repeated threats from the IRGC to simply cut the cables amid rising tensions. Tehran has long treated the strait as its personal toll booth for oil shipments. Now it is extending that pirate mentality to the digital world, weaponizing data flows the same way it has menaced energy routes.
The regime knows exactly what it is doing: creating a new digital chokepoint to blackmail the region and the West. While Gulf economies hang in the balance, Iran holds the leverage with minimal risk to itself. This is not governance. It is economic terrorism dressed up as sovereignty.

Australia has opened the Southern Hemisphere’s first commercial green steel plant — the Whyalla Green Steel facility in South Australia — using hydrogen plasma direct reduction to convert iron ore into steel without any coking coal combustion, producing zero-carbon steel at commercial scale.
The Whyalla facility operates a 700-degree Celsius hydrogen plasma shaft furnace where pure green hydrogen — produced from South Australian wind and solar electricity at the site — reacts with iron ore pellets to reduce iron oxide to metallic iron without any carbon involvement. The resulting direct reduced iron feeds into an electric arc furnace powered by renewable electricity to produce finished steel, eliminating all process CO2 emissions that account for 7 to 9 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Steel production cost at Whyalla reaches 620 Australian dollars per tonne — within 18 percent of conventional blast furnace steel costs at current energy prices, making green steel commercially competitive without any carbon price. Whyalla has contracted green steel supply to Toyota, Komatsu, and the Australian federal government’s infrastructure programme for the first three years of production.

Committee recommends disestablishing Environment Ministry despite public oppositionThe Environment Select Committee has recommended disestablishing the Ministry for the Environment, despite overwhelming public opposition.
In its report, the committee said the creation of a new Cities, Environment, Regions and Transport mega ministry under a bill currently before Parliament would not significantly change the functions of the current ministry.
The committee received 588 written submissions. All but five submissions were overtly opposed to the bill.
It has recommended by majority that the bill be passed, despite strong opposition from Labour and Green Party members.
The Green Party members slammed the bill as ”yet another action by the most anti-environment government that Aotearoa New Zealand has ever had.”
The Labour Party members said they were ”appalled by the constant attacks on the environment by this government.”
Greens environment spokesperson Lan Pham said the government’s plan to get rid of the Ministry is ”an absolute travesty for New Zealand.”
”The Ministry for the Environment was established because years ago New Zealanders decided that a voice for the environment at the heart of government was actually essential. It was established at the same time as the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, reflecting how important New Zealanders believed environmental oversight should be,” she said.

I am so surprized that as in Viking’s link that they seem to be shutting down the Environment Ministry.
Though there are many other parts that will continue on, so still a concern that some may receive some of those monies, powers,& controls.
