I don’t quite know how that one works. Pretty much all the land around Marsden Point belongs to Northport – used to be Marsden Maritime Holdings but they are now made up of ports of Auckland, Ports of Tauranga and, Northland Regional council I think. Them, Chanell Infrastructure and Meridian own pretty much all the land out there including Marsden Cove Marina. None of it is for sale. Meridian are covering most of their land including the are between Rama road and Marsden point road along Port Marsden Highway with solar panels. That backs onto the beach where they should be putting up hotels, it’s beautiful down there. At the very least it would have been great industrial land. I’m hopeful this idea goes ahead as it would be good for the area but it does sound like another buy the BNZ moment. I don’t trust Winston or Shane.

I just cannot comprehend how the Department of Conservation (DOC) manages to convince successive governments to provide significant amounts of scarce taxpayer funding for what can only be described as landscape-scale ecocide , i.e. aerial spreading of 1080 poison.
Globally, the population of humans has more than doubled, since 1970. In stark contrast, during a similar period, global wildlife has collapsed, by more than 60%.
Studies have suggested a 75% reduction in global insect wildlife, in the past two or three decades.
More than 93% of mammalian biomass on the planet now is either human, or the animals humans farm to feed themselves.
We are amidst the sixth mass extinction .. which some have dubbed the Anthropocene Epoch, because our species – humans – is the primary causal factor.
Eco-toxin
And yet, here in New Zealand, we aerially, indiscriminately apply thousands of tonnes of a WHO-classified Class 1A ecotoxin — originally developed as an insecticide, and which kills everything that consumes oxygen –across millions of hectares of otherwise pristine bush and backcountry.
It’s bad enough that our agricultural farming practices are a major contributor to the loss of insect biomass (due to the use of pesticides to improve crop efficiency) — but to then turn around and, completely discretionarily, carpet-bomb our backcountry — with poisoned cereal baits formulated to mimic food?
It’s no wonder they kill target and non-target, introduced and indigenous, mammalian, avian, and reptilian, vertebrate and invertebrate species alike.
The whole exercise by DOC is based on lies. DOC says the poison doesn’t enter the food chain – but everything enters the food chain.
Good gosh, the method of killing mustelids as admitted by DOC,,is via secondary poisoning i.e. eating poisoned carcasses.
If that’s not evidence of the poison entering the food chain, then what is?
For years, they tried to cover up how 1080 kills kea, and other species — then they couldn’t cover it up any more.
Madness
Only one country in the world is stupid enough to do what DOC does here in New Zealand, on the scale we do it – and with the blessing of naive governments.
It’s mankind doing — what mankind does.
It’s the kind of thinking that result in mankind having such a destructive effect on the species we share our planet with.
As Einstein told us (paraphrased) “we cannot fix the problems we’ve created .. with more of the same sort of thinking we used when we created them.”
It is sheer, unadulterated madness.
As the late Dr Jane Goodall told us, when she last visited New Zealand .. we must be able to find a better way than 1080 poison Governments’ responses – dramatically increase the usage of the poison!
David Attenborough won’t have a bar of 1080. I personally have a handwritten letter from him saying so.
The sooner we bring the ecocide of 1080 poison to an end, the better.
One day, future generations will look back on this period – and it will not be regarded as good reading.
Meanwhile DOC and MPs should hang their heads in shame and then swiftly act to bring an end to the ecocide.

Had occasion to take the Gulf Harbour ferry into Auckland today. Ferry goes right past Port of Auckland which is usually bustling with the activity of ships being processed. I can report that this afternoon I saw only a single ship being loaded with containers. I hope there is some good reason for this other than the slow economy.
