The Department of Conservation met with Te Korowai o Wainuiārua, Ngāti Rangi, Te Patutokotoko and Ngāti Hāua in mid-February to “understand their views” on the site.
Another memo sent to Potaka in late February on iwi engagement was significantly redacted but stated iwi and hapū views around the Chateau were “relatively aligned”.
“There is a risk that any process to select a long term leasee for the Chateau may be viewed as pre-emptive to settlement negotiations,” Potaka was told.
Conservation Minister Tama Potaka is weighing up options on a potential lifeline for the derelict Chateau Tongariro, which shut in early 2023 following seismic concerns.
Potaka is still awaiting advice from the Department of Conservation (DoC) on long-term options for the Chateau and said no decision has been made.
DoC officials had briefed Potaka that “several parties were interested” in restoring the hotel “without Government funding assistance” prior to the launch of the official request for proposals (RFP).
“In their returns, they noted that the cost of restoration and strengthening made a longer lease term necessary than is legally possible under the Conservation Act 1987 to make the restoration viable,” the department told Potaka in December.
Officials provided advice to the minister in response to a petition from the area’s local council, spearheaded by Ruapehu District Mayor Weston Kirton, calling for the hotel to be “saved”.

There is so much shit on DOC and Potaka’s side. I know one of the people who is keen to restore the Chateau and specialises in restoring Heritage buildings and turning them into well run 4 or 5 Star Hotels and has a long record in this field. This Geezer has the funds at hand to cough up $100 Million for the Chateau restoration, has a signed letter (already given to DOC and Potaka about 1 year ago) from Ngati Haua, Ngati Rangi, Te Korowai o Wainuiārua, Te Patutokotoko and every other Grifter who claims interest in the Chateau and it’s grounds, confirming (the person I know) is their preferred Lessee and the length of the lease should be 100 years, given the cost of restoration. In this letter it also states that the Holder of the Letter, has agreed to pay the above Maori IWI full ground and Consultative fees for that 100 years in one lumpsum, in advance.
And still there is no progress. The flies in the ointment, Potaka and DOC and this is why no progress on the Chateau restoration has been made and will not be made for some considerable time.
What is the minister for racing going to do about this.?
The New Zealand racing industry is on the verge of a financial crisis that could see stakes slashed while iconic race tracks are slated for closure as the two equine codes face potential combined budget deficits of over $20 million next season.

New Zealand’s two horse-racing codes are run by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) and Harness Racing New Zealand (HRNZ), whose primary source of funding comes via TAB NZ, which passes on the industry’s share of profit from TAB betting in New Zealand.
The advisory committee is headed by Sir Peter Vela (NZ Bloodstock), alongside Sir Brendan Lindsay (Cambridge Stud), Greg Tomlinson (Nearco Thoroughbreds), Ken Breckon (Breckon Farms) and Steve Thompson (successful racehorse owner), the latter two from the harness racing code, Waikato Stud owner Mark Chittick and superstar Kiwi trainer Chris Waller, who is now the leading trainer in Australia.
All are not only racing experts but also successful businessmen, and represent a horse-racing industry dream team of commercial knowledge.
Among their recommendations are merging NZTR and HRNZ into one entity (with the working title Central Co) to save costs.
Perhaps more crucially, they want to establish a property vehicle or trust to combine some of horse-racing’s enormous real estate assets, to increase the industry’s liquidity and ability to fund some of the crucial infrastructure projects planned.

The Government will crack down on Run It Straight-type events and other combat sports following lobbying from sports and health organisations.
The lobbying is laid out in government briefing documents released exclusively to the Herald under the Official Information Act.
Speaking to the Herald after the documents’ release, Sports Minister Mark Mitchell said: “Unregulated activities, like run-it-type events, are not supported or associated with any government agency.

To buy SpaceX shares you need to trust a lot more than Elon. You need to trust the market will work, there won’t be manipulation, that the forced buying by index funds won’t distort the market etc. SpaceX and Elon could perform according to their offering and you could still lose money on the shares especially as the price they are being offered at looks a bit rich. My guess is that the ipo will go well initially especially with the forced purchase by index funds and the price will then fall back. But as I say it’s only a gut feel guess not based on any in depth analysis.

A few years ago, a female police officer arrested naaska, a 22-year-old white male, fornicating with a pumpkin in the middle of the night.
The next day, at the Masterton Courthouse, Naaska was charged with lewd and lascivious behaviour, public indecency and public intoxication.

i think the bigger issue here is emergency alerts for heavy swells… seriously wtf, im pretty sure anyone close enough for it to concern would be well aware of state of the incoming swells.
they overuse and abuse that emergency system

My guess is the emergency alerts are sent to test some aspect of a surveillance system.being built.
