Health Minister Simeon Brown has replaced the leadership of New Zealand’s medical regulator, saying the Medical Council has become distracted by politics and an “ideological agenda”.
Brown declined to reappoint Medical Council chair Dr Rachelle Love and deputy chair Simon Watt when their terms expired, despite both remaining eligible for reappointment,
The Medical Council is responsible for registering doctors, setting professional standards and ensuring practitioners are competent and fit to practise.
Brown said ministerial appointments were ultimately a matter for ministers.
“The Medical Council has become increasingly distracted by politics instead of focusing on its core responsibilities of improving patient outcomes and ensuring New Zealanders can get the care they need, when they need it,” he told The Post.
Brown pointed to the council’s recent consultation on draft statements covering cultural competence, cultural safety and Māori health and wellbeing.
Christchurch surgeon Rachelle Love (Ngāpuhi, Te Arawa) was elected chair of the Medical Council in March 2024.
The documents outlined expectations that doctors understand how culture can affect health outcomes and how bias and systemic factors can contribute to inequities.
“You only need to look at the council’s recent consultation documents, which ask doctors to examine their own ‘privilege’, to challenge the ‘dominant culture’ of the health system, to study the difference between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation, and to help ‘dismantle’ systems,” Brown told The Post.
“Kiwis expect the Medical Council to be focused on strengthening the medical workforce, not on an ideological agenda.”
On Monday, the council’s website confirmed former MidCentral DHB chief medical officer Dr Kenneth Clark had been appointed chairperson, with professional director Ming-Chun Wu appointed deputy chairperson.
“I expect the new council members to refocus on what matters most to Kiwis; putting patients first, improving health outcomes, and supporting the growth of our medical workforce. Those priorities should always have been at the heart of the council’s work,” Brown said.
The Post reported the council had supported Love and Watt continuing in their leadership roles when their terms expired.
Love, a Christchurch head and neck surgeon, joined the council in 2020 and was elected chair by fellow council members in 2024.
Neither Love nor Watt responded to requests for comment from The Post.
The move has prompted concern among some senior doctors, who say it raises questions about the independence of professional regulators.
Association of Salaried Medical Specialists executive director Sarah Dalton described the decision as “weird” and said it raised broader questions about the independence of professional regulators, The Post reported.
The leadership change comes as the Government considers reforms to the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act.
Last year, Love warned against politicians playing a direct role in determining who can practise medicine amid proposals that would allow the Health Minister to direct health profession regulators to implement Government policy.
In a statement, the Medical Council noted its members are appointed by the Minister of Health.
“Four medical practitioner members are nominated through an election of the medical profession and subsequently appointed by the Minister.
“Four medical practitioner members and all lay members are appointed directly by the Minister … Questions about individual appointment or reappointment decisions are best directed to the Minister’s office.”
Still a long way to go to modernise the medical profession. Will still be controlled by the chemical companies.

There are things that a free market will never do, and it’s usually for very good reasons.
Running fiber-optic cable down a twelve-mile dirt road costs a fortune, and the handful of households scattered along that road will never pay enough in monthly bills to justify the cost of laying the cable.
That’s why private companies don’t bother laying fiber in rural areas: the math doesn’t work.
But living out in the country is a choice— one that plenty of people gladly make. Some people value the space, the quiet, and the empty horizon far more than same-day Amazon delivery or 1 gigabit Internet.
And most people typically know about these trade-offs before they move out to the country. Urban and suburban conveniences are just that— conveniences. They are not inalienable “rights”. No one is entitled to fast internet.
Yet Congress has decided at least 133 times that fast Internet, is, in fact, a right. And one that they have decided to provide with your money.
Its biggest program is the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program, known as BEAD. It was created in 2021 as part of Joe Biden’s staggering infrastructure bill, and over $42 billion was allocated to wire up rural America.
Five years later it has connected almost nobody. The first BEAD-funded household in the entire country came online only this spring— a single home near Ogallala, Nebraska, hooked up in May 2026. About a hundred more followed in rural Louisiana. That was the triumphant achievement of five years and ridiculous money spent: a couple hundred connected homes.
BEAD is far from alone. In 2023, the Government Accountability Office— Congress’s own watchdog— set out to count the federal government’s broadband programs and found more than 133 of them, scattered across 15 separate agencies.
These programs are largely similar yet have no coordinated plan to prevent overlap, or wiring the same stretch of dirt twice.
The GAO told them to sort it out. When it checked back in 2025, most of the work hadn’t been touched.
So what do you do about 133 overlapping programs and a flagship that spent billions to connect a couple hundred homes?
If you’re the United States Congress, you add a 134th broadband program!
On June 3, the House Rules Committee advanced next year’s Agriculture spending bill with fresh loans and grants for the US Department of Agriculture’s ReConnect program— the 134th rural broadband fund, stacked on the $42 billion one that barely works and the 133 others nobody can keep track of.
A private company that spends so much money to connect a couple hundred homes would be bankrupt, and its executives likely facing criminal charges. A federal agency that does it gets a sequel.
What makes it worse is that the problem was already solved by the free market.
Anyone at the end of a dirt road can order a Starlink dish online and have high-speed internet running within about a week— no federal fiber, no years-long wait, no act of Congress.
For that $42 billion price tag, the US taxpayer could have bought a Starlink dish for every one of the top-end estimate of 12 million unserved households in America AND prepaid their internet service for the next five years.
So where did that money go?
It is egregious. The government borrows $2 trillion a year to do this sort of garbage, and acts like a single dollar cut from the budget would throw single mothers out on the streets. They literally wail that “people will die”.
And half the country thinks the answer is to collect more in taxes!
Keep in mind, this $42 billion is part of the legitimate spending — not the $600 billion a year the Treasury Secretary estimates is lost to outright fraud, the $186 billion in improper payments the government admits to, or the hundreds of billions in legal graft on top.
All that borrowing and waste gets paid for one way or another— a weaker dollar, higher taxes, more inflation.

Country living has it’s ups & downs but realistically most addresses five kilometres down a gravel road an hour from the nearest town aren’t dole bludgers or civil servants. They’re normally farmers who are about the only industry group who produce goods that NZ Inc can sell as opposed to the hot air & unicorn farts of their city cousins.
To reiterate, it is this correspondent’s opinion that producing meat/wool/wood/milk are far more worthy pursuits than selling real estate & coffee to each other.
So where should systemic rural deprivation begin & end. Should we do without rural deliveries, phone lines, power, school buses & airlift wool bales to market? Are we undeserving of road access to supermarkets, digital banking, all health care? Should we resign ourselves to taking the horse & dray through the river & in to town every spring & autumn?
Ruling out broadband internet is only the start. Think of all the other savings to be made! /////

Which aspect of it?
It’s pretty common for government departments to not do proper due diligence on the software they’re being sold as “a perfect solution” and to find it’s either vapourware or difficult to integrate. I suspect that some of the higher-ups involved in the decision making get nice trips to exotic locations to see the software in action.
And $30 million or so will get eaten up really fast by a full team of contractors – especially if they’re provided by some of the consulting companies – I did see Datacom named, and I know the kinds of figures they charge people out at.
It was also MBIE; and what else might one expect from a bloated leviathan like them.
What fascinates me is that often with only a change of a few key people, a disaster in the making could be a success story.
Apparently this has been going on for 7 years. But the crucial bit is how they tried to fudge everything so it avoid Cabinet oversight. if those responsible are still there then they need to be sacked ASAP –no excuses.

I wonder if they asked IRD about their cgt policy. Loses in trading anything, shares, gold, crypto, are tax deductable, in the year you incur that loss. Any residue loss, IS carried over to the following year. As are any profits. It works both ways, so Liarbor are lying to the public again.
Only if you are a trader would you pay cgt or claim losses on non FIF shares. FIF shares have their own regime where you can’t claim capital losses. (Unless you are de minimis and hold less than 50k at purchase in said FIF shares) For gold and crypto you would have to show that you didn’t buy with the intention of selling to avoid cgt. Pretty hard to do.

My accountant told me that this has never been tested in court. It’s just IRD’s interpretation of the law. All it would take is someone with deep pockets to test it in a court and see.

Today “Rainbow Action Tamaki” sent me a letter threatening legal action against my previous post calling them a self-important, egotistical, bunch of rent-a-crowd protesters when they protested about NZFirst’s definition of a woman bill last Sunday.
They want me to delete my post, apologise, and donate money to their ‘charity’.
My post is now passing 1.7million views on Facebook. So no. I won’t be deleting it with all the positive responses it is receiving from kiwis with common sense who are backing our stance.
We also won’t be donating any money to their cause mainly due to not knowing which kind of flag it will be spent purchasing seeing as they can’t make their mind up what protest they are at.
And as for me saying I’m sorry:
I am sorry. I am sorry that you have proven us right. Your egos know no bounds.
I called you a bunch of egotistical mouth-breathers who think the universe revolves around you – and this threat of legal action, thinking that you are the most important thing in this whole conversation, is precisely why ordinary kiwis have had a gutsful of you and your rent-a-crowd.
If you want to take me to court, go ahead, we will ensure we use discovery to read all the emails and communications you had with the Green Party and whomever else you coordinate with and find out who is really behind all of this.

That was a great job. The stage is old and is unusual in the sense that it actually slopes from back to front. The reason is that it was built for choirs, and so the people standing at the back are raised. The curtain itself hadn’t been down ever and was really grubby. It’s an old type of curtain, and all those droops held dust and dirt. The mechanism had been played with and is actually working the wrong way around.
We also cleaned all the dust and cobwebs from all sides and the ceiling, as that hadn’t been done in years either.
The worst part was being in there when the fire siren went off.
One of the parts of that job was to treat the curtain with Fire Retardant.
It’s the only stage that I am aware of that still has that style of curtain.
The crew really enjoyed that job, and it was a great challenge.
