      • When I see an agency with a Te Reo name, I assume that it is specifically for people who self-identify as “Maori.” If it were for the general public, surely its name would be in a language that all citizens could understand.

      • If a government department gets a Te Reo name, sure this must be an expensive process that involves a huge amount of “consultation” and “permission.”
        Does the government actually “own” the rights to the names of these agencies or does a licensing fee have to be regularly paid to the iwi think-tank that approves the final name?

        • Not to mention taxpayers paying the cost of changing all department signage, stationery and advertising to include the joint maori name. That cost isn’t insignificant. Multiply those costs through all departments. It is nothing though compared to the cost of a whole separate health system for the special people.

          Maintaining speed limits while making safety a priority.
          And also funding 51% of maintaining rural roads.

    • I would like to see the age and comorbidity statistics for the 42 of the 39,000 who died “with” or “from” the Indian variant.
      It could be that the vaccine is only really effective for a specific strain of the virus (like with annual influenza shots that have to be changed each season).

      I am sure that governments around the world have learned so much about how to manipulate their populations in the wake of this pandemic. What is amazing is how closely governments have followed each other.

  19. Some observations from a rural South Islander driving around the East Coast, yesterday Tokomaru Bay to The Kaha Hariki, about 180 kms.
    The roads are shit, not the windy hilly bit but the potholes, bumps, slumps and rough condition of the seal. It is a S.H., NZTA should be ashamed.
    Rubbish on the roadsides everywhere, worst we seen since Spain and they were the worse of 34 Countries in Europe.
    The town ship buildings are very run down, Ruatoria, Hicks Bay etc.
    Graveyards of wrecked cars at frequent intervals.
    Seat belts not being worn.
    Lots of horses everywhere.
    Lots of useless non productive land.
    Cleared pine tree areas not replanted but have seen good land planted in pine and why would native trees be planted.
    Maori have often a darker shade than South Island, I guess we mix and match more readily.
    Mongrel Mob members strutting around with very arrogant look.
    Noticed young Maori boys looking at them, are they impressed, probably.
    Saw 2 young slim attractive well dressed teenage girls walking in Ruatoria, what does the future hold for them if they cannot get away?
    So many Marae’s, almost all empty even though it is a Sunday.
    So many Latter Day Saints Churches, Mormons.
    100 km speed limit with most corners 25, 35, 45, 55 advisory. Why bother.
    Electric Car rechargers in most towns, can not see any locals owning one, their cars all seemed to be low slung black with dark tinted windows.
    Best ever Fish and chips from Waihau Bay.

      I worked in student days in a pub in Wellington and there was a large contingent from Tolaga Bay who drank there.
      I picked up on their lifestyle pretty well.
      It s largely slow and non changing.
      Even this century the kids regularly ride horses to school.
      Shoes are not a big thing in the area.

    The fish of the day was something called Ta-ra-hi-ki. (BTW, “tara” is Japanese for “cod” so I thought at first it was some type of cod.)

    Our waiter was a very serious white guy with a ponytail.

    It took me a bit to realize that he was talking about the fish name in English usage that is pronounced as “tera-ki.”

    I wonder how long it will be before all the common English names of fish are replaced with the officially approved Te Reo ones? For example, restaurant staff will be forbidden to use the name “snapper” and will have to say “tamure” or risk losing their jobs.
