The Patuharakeke Rohe Moana Committee and Te Rerenga Parāoa Rohe Moana Committee have each applied for a mātaitai reserve under regulation 18 of the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998. The applications are made on behalf of Ngāti Kahu, Parawhau, Ngāti Tu and Patuharakeke.
This is the first of 2 consultations to be held about the applications. For this consultation, we invite written submissions on the proposals from the local community.
The proposed mātaitai reserves in Whangārei Harbour and Bream Bay represent a significant assertion of indigenous governance by local hapū, aimed at reclaiming authority over traditional fishing grounds and marine resources .
These applications, managed by Fisheries New Zealand, aim to empower local Tangata Kaitiaki to manage ecosystems and prohibit commercial fishing, thereby strengthening customary guardianship and bypassing slow, centralized, state-led management processes [1]. MMH has been subsumed by Northport ltd who have just appointed a new CEO who will hopefully declare war on these grifters.
