New offshore exploration permit application lodged off northern Taranaki coast
A new offshore petroleum exploration permit application covering 645 square kilometres off the northern Taranaki coast has been lodged, with New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals (NZP&M) opening a three-month competitive application process.
The application, lodged by Sunda Energy, covers waters within the northern Taranaki Basin between northern Taranaki and southern Waikato.
Unlike the deepwater petroleum prospecting permit application lodged about 200 kilometres west of North Taranaki earlier this month, this proposal covers a much smaller area within New Zealand’s territorial sea off the northern Taranaki coast.
According to NZP&M, the proposed permit area includes the previously discovered Awakino gas condensate discovery, along with several other identified petroleum prospects.
If granted, the permit would allow exploration activities only. Any future exploration drilling would require separate regulatory approvals.

IRAN WAR – SAUDI ARABIA JUST ENTERED THE WAR.
While the world focused on Hormuz, a second front quietly exploded yesterday.
An Iranian Mahan Air flight, IRM1199 — left Tehran headed for Sanaa, Yemen’s Houthi-controlled capital.
Its mission: return the Houthi delegation that had attended Khamenei’s funeral in Iran.
Yemen’s internationally recognized government, backed by Saudi Arabia, said it had exhausted diplomatic efforts to stop the flight.
When the plane entered Yemeni airspace anyway, airstrikes hit Sanaa International Airport’s runway.
The Iranian plane diverted to Hodeidah airport, also Houthi-controlled.
The Houthis immediately called it what it was.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree called it “blatant aggression” and declared it had “ended the de-escalation phase.”
The Houthis then fired ballistic missiles and drones directly at Saudi Arabia’s Abha International Airport.
Saudi air defenses intercepted the missiles.
No casualties were reported.
But the attacks marked an escalation not seen since the Saudi-led coalition last struck Houthi-controlled areas years ago.
The Houthis then threatened to strike King Khalid Airport in Riyadh itself, Saudi Arabia’s capital, and warned all airlines against flying in Saudi airspace until the “siege” on Sanaa airport was lifted.
Now understand what this means for the global energy picture.
Hormuz, already operating at 12% of normal capacity carries 20% of the world’s seaborne energy.
Bab al-Mandeb, the strait the Houthis control, carries another 12%.
Combined — Iran and its proxies can theoretically threaten 32% of the world’s seaborne energy simultaneously.
Saudi Arabia just re-entered a war it spent four years quietly exiting.
The Houthis just ended a ceasefire that had held since 2022.
And Iran just tried to open an air bridge to its proxy, while simultaneously being bombed by America.

Police led changes dismantled this successful model, replacing it with a centralised approach that relied on paid staff. Now, as the Authority moves back toward community trainers who will again serve voluntarily, cover their own costs, and receive no pay, COLFO is asking a straightforward question:

My guess would be that the money is needed to prop up the expensive and pointless Firearms Registry which, contrary to the promises, is not preventing or solving any crimes nor making us any safer.
I got my renewed licence this week, nine months after applying for it. There is an important mistake on it so now I have to send it back to be corrected. Imagine if it took nine months to renew your drivers licence or passport!

My grandma has been catfishing scammers for six months and she’s weirdly good at it.
Okay so my grandma is 74 and lives alone since my grandpa died. We got her an iPad last year so she could FaceTime with the grandkids and she’s become dangerously online.
She got one of those typical scam messages like two months ago. The “Hey beautiful, I’m a soldier stationed overseas, let’s get to know each other” type thing. We’ve all told her about these scams.
But instead of blocking him, she decided to “play along and waste his time so he can’t scam real victims.”
Her words.
So she’s been talking to “Raymond,” who claims to be a 58 year-old Army medic stationed in Syria (red flag central). But my grandma has created an entire fake persona. She told him her name is Carolyn (it’s Janet), she’s 62 (she’s 74), and she owns a “successful cupcake business” (she’s retired from accounting and once burned brownies so bad we had to replace the pan).
She sends him stock photos of cupcakes from Google Images. He sends her clearly stolen photos of some random handsome dude in fatigues.
Here’s where it gets weird: she’s actually doing research. She watches YouTube videos about common scam tactics. She’s in a Facebook group about scambaiting. She has a NOTEBOOK where she tracks details of their conversations so she doesn’t slip up.
“Raymond” recently tried to move to the “I need money for a phone to call you” phase and my grandma strung him along for THREE WEEKS with excuses. “Oh the bank was closed.” “My account is frozen, something about taxes.” “I sent it but maybe it went to the wrong place?”
She’s never sent him a cent, obviously. She’s just wasting his time.
The family is divided on this. My mom thinks it’s hilarious. My aunt thinks grandma’s losing it and this is early dementia (it’s not, she’s sharp as ever). My uncle thinks she’s going to accidentally get doxxed.
But grandma is having the time of her life. She’s started messing with two other scammers. One thinks she’s a wealthy widow in Miami. Another thinks she’s a former pageant queen.
She showed me her notebook last week and it’s incredibly detailed. Different backstories, different names, relationship timelines. She’s put more effort into this than I put into my actual job.
I asked her why she doesn’t just block them and she said, “Every minute they’re talking to me is a minute they’re not stealing some poor lonely person’s retirement money.”
Which is kind of sweet? In a chaotic way?
Anyway “Raymond” is getting frustrated because she won’t send money and keeps changing the subject to cupcake recipes. I think he’s about to give up.
Grandma’s already got her eye on a new scammer who claims to be a widowed oil rig worker. She’s workshopping a new persona. Thinking about being a “former Vegas showgirl.”
I’ve stopped trying to talk her out of it. This is her retirement hobby now.
If you can figure all those things, then this is next step up to AI scammer.

I did something similar about 20 years ago. It was at a time share scam in Turangi. We were invited to this sit down at the timeshare resort. I was not interested in buying anything. It progressed with the sales rep trying all sorts of ways to get me to commit. The first sin I committed was not sitting at the round table were he asked me to sit. Instead I sat opposite were he wanted me to sit. I did this knowing full well that he wanted to be able to see and get instructions from his boss, if I had sat where he wanted me. It progressed a long time with me asking all sorts of questions, usually starting with a “Why”. I could sense his frustration as it went on. It ended when his boss came and asked if I was a genuine buyer.
“Of course not” I said “just here to see how long it would take you to realise Im am taking the piss.
The “free watch” they gave me didn’t last long, just cheap crap.
I never did get to the “free watch” stage, even though some of those meet up venues were not that far away.
And of course, the “no obligation” would have made them bite their tongue.
However I used to pretend, I was old, a bit tiddly as I explained, had a glass or 2 of the top shelf, just after dinner. as you do.
However the hook was I had a great cruise in the Carribean, or Alaska, & so much enjoyed my time as I enjoyed new sites & places, though finding it was a bit fast pace, wishing I had more time explore any one of those places.
So sometimes they would ring again, & sometimes when played out, had a good breaker was that my travel agent had got in touch or just checked my calendar & so I had booked another far off cruise,
I’ve never played along with any time share leeches but I had a bit of fun with life insurance agents in the late 60s. For persistence those scammers took some beating.

Fuel costs usually get the blame, but in fact in June we spent -1.7% less on fuel, even as we generally spent less on almost everything else. So the fuel cost savings did not boost other spending. Within that, durables fell -3.9%, apparel -2.2% and hospitality by -1.9%.

National proposes to designate a specialist Building Consent Authority for large building projects and wants to allow engineers to sign off some building work without needing council inspection
The National Party is proposing to allow qualified engineers to sign off certain building work without needing council inspection and it also wants to designate a specialist Building Consent Authority to use a single pathway for consents.
Making the policy announcement on Wednesday, National’s Building and Construction spokesperson Chris Penk says “for too long, building has been slower and more expensive than it needs to be”.
If National is re-elected into government, Penk says they would kick off these changes with commercial buildings, which make up around $9 billion of consented work each year.

Thanks Paul you hit the nail on the head,im 83yr old ex builder,built my last house 2yrs ago,As I did 50 yrs ago I did most things myself under the do-it- yourself rules,what a nightmare, the council and building compliance people hated me for questioning their costly beauacratic nonsense.
They always arrived on site for compliance inspections with 2 inspectors,was for fun or a good argument,I dont blame them as they are only the messenger, its the behind the scenes academic elite who’ve written the rule book I blame but I can’t find or confront them.I could go on but will end with a couple examples.
Don’t expect costs to lower as the govt takes 15% gst on everything you purchase or supply.
First home buyer purchasing a 3 bed home on half a normal section at 835k $ package with whatever debt,plus rates,plus insurance,etc is not a property ladder its a prison.Its govt promoted as govt gets over 125k $ GST tax on that deal.
My brother and I built houses in on wellingtons steep hills in the 1970s.We completed a house every 6 weeks,We mixed and poured approximately 18 cubic mtrs of concrete by hand each house,did our own pre framing pre cut,pitched and laid roof roof,interior jib linings,hung interior doors all on site in 6 weeks,ill admit today’s houses are.of better quality but ours are still standing the test of time plus the total cost inclusive of section was approximately 5yrs gross income.

It’s made round to go round, or so we’re told, but did you read the comments to the article? The first one was a lengthy peroration on the sinful relationship between the writer’s DIL & their son’s best mate. Eventually the clandestine affair became public & broke up both marriages.
