WHERE IS THE MĀORI LEADERSHIP?
When an 86-year-old former Labour MP and Māori Affairs Minister, Dover Samuels, speaks this bluntly about what is happening to Māori children, perhaps people should actually stop and listen.
While talking with Michael Laws Samuels, has reportedly said Shane Jones asked him to come to the Kaikohe hikoi to wake up Ngāpuhi to the atrocities happening to their own children.
His message was brutal. He said he has no faith in the “born again unelected kaumātua” leadership, questioned what John Tamihere and Te Pāti Māori have actually done for their people, and said Māori have no leadership and that Māori themselves have to fix this, and Michael Laws says he’s over it too.
Too many Māori children are dying. Too many Māori are dealing with drugs and violence. There is no Māori leadership.
That should not be a controversial statement, It should be a wake-up call.
Because where is the introspection?
Where is the courage to stand up and say, we are failing our own people and we need to fix it?
Instead, too often we get another speech about colonisation.
Another demand for co-governance, Another Treaty hikoi, Another accusation that the problem is everyone else’s fault.
But meanwhile, children are being killed.
Catalya Remana Tangimetua-Pepene was just three years old when she tragically died in Northland. A man has been charged with her murder and has pleaded not guilty, while a woman has been charged with neglect in relation to her death.
She is not a political talking point.
She was a little girl.
And she should still be alive.
This is where I agree with Dover Samuels, If you are going to claim to be a leader of Māori, then leadership cannot simply mean demanding more political power or being given another seat at another table.
Leadership means having the courage to confront the problems inside your own community.
Drugs. Gangs, Violence, Family breakdown, Children being failed.
And yes, culture can be discussed honestly too.
Not every problem can be blamed on colonisation. Not every failure can be blamed on the Government. At some point responsibility has to exist somewhere.
And that responsibility belongs to all of us.
Parents have responsibilities, Communities have responsibilities, Government has responsibilities, And those who claim to represent Māori have an enormous responsibility to actually deliver better outcomes for Māori.
Mane Tahere has been presented as a leader for Ngāpuhi. He has a Master’s in Indigenous Leadership and has held an equity role in Northland health.
Fine.
But a qualification doesn’t make someone a leader, A title doesn’t make someone a leader.
Leadership is what you do when your people are hurting, It’s having the courage to tell your own people what they don’t want to hear.
It’s standing up against gangs. It’s standing up against meth. It’s standing up against violence.
It’s protecting children before another child becomes another statistic.
And if someone is prepared to call themselves a leader, they should be prepared to be held accountable for the outcomes.
This isn’t about attacking Māori, It’s about asking a bloody uncomfortable question.
Where are the Māori leaders prepared to put their own people ahead of politics?
Where are the leaders prepared to say enough is enough?
Where are the leaders prepared to stop blaming everyone else and start demanding better from their own communities?
Because decolonisation isn’t going to save a child from a violent home, A Treaty hikoi isn’t going to get meth out of a community, A political speech isn’t going to stop a gang recruiting another kid.
Leadership might.
But only if somebody is actually prepared to lead.
Māori children deserve better than political slogans.
They deserve leaders with the courage to tell the truth.
And if that truth makes people uncomfortable, maybe that’s exactly why it needs to be said.

I don’t actually believe it’s fair to pin responsibility for this issue on Maori in general. The Maori people I have and have had as friends over the years wouldn’t condone or accept such behaviour any more than I would.
I understand that Maori are more likely to be represented in crime statistics in general, but to make all Maori responsible is like trying to make me responsible for Brenton Tarrant’s actions, say, because both of us are white and of European descent.
Honestly, everyone knows which kids are at risk of turning into ferals when they’re older. It’s their parents’ fault at that point. Resources need to be put into those kids to try and give them an honest chance. And have much closer monitoring of their home life.
That said, there is also individual responsibility. I was friendly with a Maori kid from a Mongrel Mob family up the street. His brothers all become mobsters – he didn’t. Hard working family man. I’d love to see him to say hi; he always stopped to talk to my old mum and she appreciated it.

The organisation receives support from other partners and funders but its main source of funding is from Creative New Zealand (CNZ).
The trust received $697,125 in 2023, $711,068 in 2024 and $725,289 last year. It will receive the latter amount again this year.

Whatever anyone thinks about Pride campaigns, drag entertainment or tā moko, an international airline should not turn itself into a platform for political, cultural and social activism. Its job is to fly aircraft safely, reliably and profitably—not promote fashionable causes.
This ideological obsession is an especially bad look after Air New Zealand reported a $242 million after-tax loss for 2026. The airline points to fuel prices, engine availability, maintenance expenses and rising aviation costs. Those are genuine pressures, but they do not place management above scrutiny.
When a company is losing hundreds of millions, its high administrative costs, corporate bureaucracy, executive appointments and every non-essential programme must be examined. Management should disclose exactly what these DEI initiatives and associated structures cost—and explain what they contribute to safety, reliability, customer service or profitability.
The Government owns 51% of Air New Zealand, and taxpayers previously supported a $2.2 billion recapitalisation package. Since receiving that taxpayer support, Air New Zealand increasingly appears to be behaving like the government departments surrounding it: top-heavy, bureaucratic, ideologically preoccupied and distracted from its essential purpose.

A genetic test would only show “Polynesian” as an outcome. No DNA test could resolve the differences between Cook Islanders, Rarotongans, “Maori,” etc.
One significant difference is that no “Maori” is 100% Maori. The best would be less than 50%. Look at the Willy Jacksons or the Taika David Cohens of the world.

01 Unlock new sources of capital
New technology can make it easier to divide, issue
and transfer ownership in productive assets,
including private companies, infrastructure,
renewable energy projects, farms and
commercial property.
That could give New Zealand businesses access
to wider pools of capital, lower transaction costs,
and new ways of funding productive investment.
But businesses need certainty about what these
assets are in law, how securities rules apply, and
how they will be taxed.
ACT will establish clear legal and tax rules
for tokenised securities and real-world assets,
making it easier to raise capital for New Zealand
businesses and productive investment.
02 Unlock faster and cheaper payments
Properly regulated stablecoins have the potential
to reduce the cost and complexity of international
payments, remittances and financial settlement.
But not every stablecoin is the same. A payment
instrument fully backed by high-quality assets
and redeemable for ordinary currency should
not automatically be treated the same way as a
speculative crypto asset.
03 Unlock innovation
Start-ups should not automatically face the same
regulatory burden as large financial institutions.
New Zealand should allow genuinely innovative
firms to test new products under proportionate
supervision, with regulation matched to the risks
they actually create.
ACT will establish a proportionate financial-
innovation sandbox that allows genuinely
innovative businesses to test new products under
appropriate supervision before moving into the
full regulatory regime.
04 Unlock long-term investment
New Zealand should not rely on subjective
assessments of why someone bought a digital
asset. Under a clear bright-line test, gains on
qualifying personal investments sold within 12
months would remain taxable, while gains on
assets held for more than 12 months would not be
taxed. Professional traders and businesses would
remain subject to the existing tax rules.
ACT will introduce a 12-month bright line for
qualifying long-term personal investment in
digital assets, providing certainty for investors
while keeping professional trading and business
activity fully taxable.
05 Unlock everyday use
Someone making a small personal purchase
should not need to calculate the acquisition price,
disposal value and resulting gain or loss on the
digital asset they used to pay for it.
That creates paperwork for taxpayers and Inland
Revenue while raising little revenue.
ACT will introduce a sensible tax exemption
for low-value purchases made using digital
assets, removing unnecessary tax compliance for
everyday users.
06 Unlock access to financial
infrastructure
A good regulatory environment is little use if a
legitimate business cannot get a bank account.
Financial institutions have important obligations
to prevent fraud, money laundering and other
illegal activity so they must be able to manage
genuine risks.
But whole categories of lawful businesses should
not be shut out simply because their technology or
business model is unfamiliar.
ACT will review whether New Zealand’s
regulatory settings are unnecessarily denying
legitimate businesses access to essential financial
infrastructure.

New Zealand will not unlock its potential by trying
to preserve yesterday’s economy. We do it by
