Labour drops to 25.9% in new poll, Opportunity below 5%The Labour Party has dropped to its lowest level of support in a Taxpayers’ Union-Curia poll since July 2024 with just 25.9%.
It comes alongside Opportunity dipping below the 5% threshold required to enter Parliament without winning an electorate.
Labour’s slide follows a persistent attack campaign from National regarding potential taxes a Labour-led coalition could implement despite the Labour leader’s insistence the party will only introduce a targeted capital gains tax.
This month’s Taxpayers’ Union-Curia poll, which surveyed 1000 between September 1-3, had National with the largest share of support but still below 30%, dropping two percentage points from last month’s poll to 29%.
Labour had dropped 1.9 points to 25.9%, the party’s worst return in this poll since July 2024.
The Green Party had received a significant boost of 3.8 points to reach 13.9%. Act had also jumped 3.2 points to 10.5%. New Zealand First had dropped by 0.7 points to 8.4% while Te Pāti Māori had gained 0.5 points to 2%.
Opportunity, which had surpassed 5% in several recent mainstream polls, had fallen back below that threshold to 4.5%, a drop of 1.6 points.
Those numbers translated to National losing one seat in the House to 39 seats when compared to last month’s poll. Labour had also lost one seat to 35.
The Green Party had gained five to reach 18 seats, Act up five to 14, NZ First down one to 11 and Te Pāti Māori up one to three seats.
Given Opportunity had not met the 5% threshold, the eight seats the party was attributed in last month’s poll were reduced to zero.
That seat allocation meant the current coalition parties had 64 seats between them, up three from last month and enough to hold a majority in the House.
The “Opposition bloc”, a combination of Labour, the Greens Te Pāti Māori and Opportunity, had dropped three seats to 56.
In the preferred Prime Minister rankings, both the National and Labour leaders had fallen with Christopher Luxon dropping two points to 21.2% but still ahead of Chris Hipkins, who had dropped 2.9 points to 16.9%.
V2, you state “Labour’s slide follows a persistent attack campaign from National”.
I don’t think you can credit National for Labour and TOP’s slide in The Taxpayer Union / Curia Poll. In fact National’s campaigning has been very poor. You can thank the general public who have woken up to what TOP will do if they get anywhere negotiating with Labour to be a Coalition Partner and the public can see that Labour and the likes of Willie Jackson will drag this country down the same path as South Africa and Zimbabwe. National have done very little to expose what New Zealand will be like if governed by the Greens, TOP, The Maori Party and Labour.
I see it is more NZ1 and ACT, who have done more to explain to the general public what a disaster being governed by a Labour led Coalition, will be. You only have to look at the substantial attendance at public meetings that ACT and NZ1 have had compared with National to see that.
S1, you are correct about the Opposition being “Taxes In Waiting”. There is absolutely nothing from them and little from this current Coalition about growing the economy and making this country a prosperous happy country. As you know this country was once at the top of the OECD but every Government we have had since then has happy taken us down the path to servitude and financial failure.

KiwiMart: A $6 Billion Socialist Gamble With Other People’s Property
The Green Party has correctly identified a serious problem: New Zealand’s supermarket sector lacks effective competition. The Commerce Commission has found that competition is not working well for consumers and that the major supermarkets retain 82 percent of the national market.
But identifying a problem does not make every proposed solution sensible.
The Greens’ answer is KiwiMart—a government-owned supermarket chain created by forcing Foodstuffs and Woolworths to sell 120 existing stores and two distribution centres into public ownership. The proposed acquisition and establishment cost is approximately $2.8 billion, while the complete “Affordable Kai” package would cost taxpayers more than $6 billion over four years.
This is not simply another government assistance programme. It is a substantial expansion of state ownership into a major private industry.
Changing ownership is not creating competitionThe Greens say New Zealand needs more supermarket competition, yet their plan would not initially build 120 new stores. It would transfer ownership of existing stores to the government.
That distinction matters. Changing the name above the door does not automatically create additional retail capacity, improve productivity or reduce the wholesale cost of food.
The Greens would be taking stores from existing operators and placing them inside a taxpayer-backed chain. That is a transfer of ownership, not the same thing as attracting a genuinely new competitor that brings additional capital, stores and distribution capacity into the country.
What happens if the owners refuse to sell? These would not necessarily be voluntary commercial transactions.
If Foodstuffs or Woolworths refused to sell the selected assets, Parliament would have to establish a compulsory-divestment process. Legislation could authorise court or regulatory orders requiring the sales to proceed, with the purchase price determined through negotiation or an official valuation process.
That would almost certainly create disputes over which stores were selected, what they were worth and whether the owners were being fairly compensated.
Foodstuffs also differs from a conventional corporate chain because it operates through cooperatives whose supermarkets are owned by individual members. Compulsory divestment could therefore affect local owner-operators—not merely one large overseas corporation.
Whatever people think of supermarket profits, these are lawful businesses operating under New Zealand law. Forcing them to surrender assets because the government wants to operate a competing chain would create a troubling precedent.
Investors would reasonably ask: if a government can compel supermarket owners to sell today, which industry could be targeted tomorrow—banking, fuel, electricity or insurance?
New Zealand depends upon businesses being willing to invest, construct buildings, employ workers and accept commercial risk. Investment becomes less attractive when successful assets can later be earmarked for compulsory sale.
Who pays when KiwiMart loses money? The $2.8 billion estimate may only be the beginning.
KiwiMart would require management, branding, computer and payment systems, employment arrangements, supply contracts, insurance, regulatory compliance and working capital. Integrating 120 stores taken from different businesses would be a substantial commercial undertaking.
If KiwiMart sold groceries below sustainable commercial prices, the difference would eventually have to be recovered somewhere. It could come through reduced services, pressure on suppliers, additional borrowing or continuing taxpayer subsidies.
Customers might pay less at the checkout only to pay again through taxation and government debt.
The policy also creates an obvious conflict of interest. The government would own KiwiMart, regulate its competitors, strengthen penalties for “price gouging” and decide whether prices charged throughout the sector were acceptable.
Would ministers protect consumers when doing so could weaken the value of the billions invested in their own supermarket chain?
Government ownership does not guarantee affordable pricesNew Zealand already has evidence that public ownership does not automatically place consumers first.
The Crown owns 51 percent of Genesis, Meridian and Mercury. These electricity companies still operate commercially, and government ownership has not guaranteed cheap household electricity.
Air New Zealand is also 51 percent Crown-owned. That ownership has not eliminated expensive domestic fares, service reductions or the financial risks associated with running an airline. Calling Air New Zealand a complete failure would overstate the evidence, but it remains a clear warning that government ownership by itself does not guarantee affordability, competition or consistently good service.
State ownership does not make wages, fuel, freight, electricity, maintenance or imported goods cheaper. Nor does it remove the need for competent management and sound commercial decisions.
KiwiMart would face exactly the same economic realities.
More than $6 billion has an opportunity costEvery dollar committed to this programme is a dollar that cannot also be spent on hospitals, roads, policing, debt reduction or tax relief.
The full policy includes expanded school lunches, larger food grants, increased food-bank funding, community food programmes and a legislated right to adequate food. Some of those measures may assist struggling families, but collectively the programme commits more than $6 billion over four years.
New Zealanders deserve more than a promise that such enormous spending will somehow make food affordable. They deserve credible evidence that the programme will deliver lasting savings greater than its cost.
Fix the barriers insteadThe supermarket market does need reform. The Commerce Commission has identified practical barriers, including difficulty obtaining suitable store sites and competitively priced wholesale supplies.
Government should address those barriers directly. It could free up suitable land, prevent restrictive covenants, strengthen wholesale-access rules and make it easier for new domestic or international operators to establish stores.
That would create additional competition instead of purchasing existing shops and placing politicians in charge of them.
KiwiMart is being presented as a supermarket owned by every New Zealander. In reality, New Zealanders would carry the financial risk whether or not they ever shopped there.
The Greens have diagnosed a genuine competition problem, but their proposed cure is a socialist gamble involving compulsory asset sales, political control and billions of dollars of public money.
New Zealand needs more competition—not another protected state enterprise that begins with promises of cheap food and ends with consumers paying at the checkout and taxpayers paying the losses.
The market and ownership details are supported by the Commerce Commission’s grocery findings, Treasury’s company classifications and Air New Zealand’s shareholder information.
How will the “Gnomes of Zurich” [thanks nasska] figure Winston Peters drive of taking over the BNZ & merging with Kiwibank to become the ‘National Bank of New Zealand’?
Seems that Chloe Swarbrick & Winston Peters can coalesce for the first big investment by’ NB of NZ’ into Kiwi-‘Mart’.
Will be great as many superannuation investments can be put into the new bank, to finance the food for the superannuiants too.
Or as the EU President, Ursula von der Leyen will insist, term deposits need to be where they can really be of use [harvested]
Both of those parties do not want Kiwis to miss out on things as the “living wage” & pensions will now show NZ as a “Land of Plenty”.
Ross, sounds like Jobs for the Boys (again) in National. From your Post.
“She is engaged to Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary and chief executive Ben King.”
Just look at the most useless Rangitikei MP, Suze Redmayne as an example of Jobs for The Boys. M/s Redmayne worked in the offices of Simon Power and then Ian McKelvie as his Electorate Secretary. I know very, very good Candidates who stood for Nomination in the 2023 National Rangitikei contest, but because she was so up Ian McKelvies arse, no one got a look in, surprisingly and I would suggest McKelvie put a very good word into the Rangitikei Selection Panel, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
I can honestly say, M/s Redmayne is the most useless National MP I have seen in my many years of Voting
To reach the status of “the most useless National MP” is an accomplishment in itself. To distinguish oneself as a bland, unintelligent, sheeplike moron in a sea of obtuse, vanilla, ovine fuckwits is no mean achievement.
My local MP, Suze has worked hard at it. In Suze case, it would be rare to admit that an MP has actually succeeded in reaching the top of the achievements you have outlined, but in her case, the success is spectacular.
Much as I respect your opinion A.H I find it hard to believe even the most useless cretin anyone could think of could possibly be more useless than the true master himself, Matt Doocey though I must admit that Watts bloke is snapping at his heels.
Must’ve been well underage. Even worse, he’s in a comparatively safe seat so he’ll probably become the next Brownlee, these sort of lemons never go away.
Doocy is more like Kale. Woke and best avoided except by vegan or alternative lifestyle enthusiasts.
The humble but very useful lemon gets a bad wrap. 🍋

Tom Homan promised to rid NYC of criminal aliens under Operation ‘Rotten Apple’ with or without access to local prisons to collect imprisoned criminals. “Feckless” socialist mayor Mamdani passed a law blocking local police from assisting ICE. It hasn’t worked.
Winston Peters announces Citizen only Superannuation, and reminds voters you have TWO votes, “keep an eye on the polls and give us the Party vote… you are the master you make the right decision”
A resident in NZ only needs to spend 20 years in total since age 20, and 5 of those years after 50 to be eligible for Super.
That means they only have to be in NZ for one year out of every three after the age of fifty, and they can get the same full amount as someone who has worked their entire life paying taxes since they were fifteen years old.
There is now 42,000 super annuitants who became resident in NZ aged 50 or older. Annually, this costs us $1 billion.
That sum has more than doubled in the past 10 years – from $500 million in 2015, to $1 billion last year.
When will we learn its alway the lefties that fuck things up? ⛽️ A GASOLINE STORY:
WIFE: “Four dollars and fifteen cents a gallon! I nearly fell over at the pump. Thanks a lot, Trump. And that whole mess with Iran.”
HUSBAND: “Whoa, whoa. Not so fast, hon.”
WIFE: “Not so fast? Gas is through the roof!”
HUSBAND: “Here’s the crazy part. Oil is actually about forty bucks a barrel CHEAPER than it was under Biden. The barrel isn’t the problem.”
WIFE: “Then why am I paying four fifteen?!”
HUSBAND: “Refining. Turning the oil into gasoline. That’s the bottleneck. And get this – we haven’t built a major new refinery in this country since 1977.”
WIFE: “Nineteen seventy-SEVEN? I was in high school!”
HUSBAND: “Not one. And we keep shutting down the ones we’ve got. California alone is closing about eighteen percent of its refineries!”
WIFE: “Who shuts down a refinery when gas costs this much?!”
HUSBAND: “The Democrats. They spent fifty years regulating them to death – permits, lawsuits, fees, and a promise to ban gas cars. Who’s going to spend a billion dollars building something Washington swears it’s going to outlaw?”
WIFE: “So it was never really about Iran.”
HUSBAND: “Iran nudges the barrel a little. But the real story? We’ve got more oil than any country on Earth and we STILL import six million barrels a day, because we can’t refine our own.”
WIFE: “That is absolutely insane.”
HUSBAND: “Here’s the good news. Trump just broke ground on the first new refinery in almost fifty years, down in Texas.”
WIFE: “So I’ve been blaming Trump and HE is the only one actually fixing it?”
too right HP, mrs sb is a trooper by fark shes been working pretty hard to fund my laziness and spending!

Considering that nothing, no nada, has been reported in the TV news or the press, that information can only have come first-hand from the leader of the group.
USSIA TEARS UP THE DEAL!
Russia: “Russia has completely severed its natural gas pipeline supply to Western Europe, effective immediately.”
EU Chief: “You cannot just freeze half a continent! This is brutal, ruthless blackmail!”
Putin: “You weaponised your sanctions against us.
Why should we keep warm the hands that try to strangle us
EU Chief: “This is an act of economic warfare! You will suffer total global isolation for this!”
Putin: “Isolation is a myth of the West. Cold winters, however, are very real.”
Have you noticed that all decent AI now says at the bottom AI can be wrong?
But Russia can play that hand.
However, they are strangling Ukraine quite effectively.
The drought has cut their back-gate waterway for their grain exports big time. The Blue Danube is the shallowest it’s been in a long time, with even less water to come. That leaves the Ukrainians with no income, as they also cannot get to the black sea ports anymore either. so buy up some wheat forwards.
Trump also wants repayment for the supplies the yanks have supplied as well.
Winter’s gonna be cold for them buggers. There’s also infighting among themselves as well. All is not happy in that corrupt place.
And the Panama Canal has the same problem. The number of boats is being cut. No water to run the thing. Someone didn’t do their homework. wider canal takes more water to run. It all goes to the sea, and the lakes are running down with no rain and El Niño on their doorstep. The euro’s will be running out of milk as well. so aussie and NZ should do well this year provided we don’y have a drought.
Germany just crossed a historic red line. The far-right AfD has officially won the Saxony-Anhalt state election, seizing nearly 45% of the vote. This is the FIRST time a nationalist party has claimed real regional power since 1945. Establishment parties are in complete PANIC mode right now. Do you think this will spread across Europe?
Is National Burying Its Race-Based Policy Reviews Until After the Election?
You have to wonder whether National has a pre-election strategy of quietly shelving contentious race-based issues until polling day is safely out of the way.
The Waitangi Tribunal review has reportedly been sitting on Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka’s desk for some time. It has not gone to Cabinet.
Why not?
Then there is the review of MAPAS—the Māori and Pacific Admission Scheme used for entry into medical programmes. Reviewing these admissions policies was part of the National–ACT coalition agreement. The work has apparently been completed and is now sitting with Associate Health Minister Matt Doocey.
Has it gone to Cabinet? No.
Has it been released publicly? No.
Once again, why not?
Could it be that National is less committed to removing race-based policies than it claimed during the election campaign? Or does it simply not want to rock the boat before voters return to the polls?
The more interesting question and something to fll your day.
Comparing those polls and the actual result.
What was the accuracy of the polls?
Bloody piss poor IIRC.
AI can do that for you.

How will the “Gnomes of Zurich” [thanks nasska] figure Winston Peters drive of taking over the BNZ & merging with Kiwibank to become the ‘National Bank of New Zealand’?
https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/politics/595496/nz-first-plan-to-buy-bnz-back-headline-grabbing-rather-than-serious-policy-economist
The day the first “compulsorily acquired” supermarket changes hands will coincidentally be the last day of overseas investment in NZ.
Nothing scares the horses (or the Gnomes of Zurich) quite like confiscation of private property.
The Greens will argue that they’re going to tax the shit out of anyone who tries to make a success of himself, and that’ll magically cover it.
My first take on this is here: The Greens’ Supermarket Nationalisation Plan: Ideology First, Arithmetic Later – No Minister
A different take on the US “debt problem”. Or as corporal Jones would say don’t panic, don’t panic.

This is interesting. National have not “parachuted” Willis or Goldsmith into Penk’s electorate.

She was formerly seconded from MFAT to Nanaia Mahuta and Simon Watts’ offices and is now a ministerial advisor in Louise Upston’s office.
well, that’s a froall from me.
Most useless? She is up against some tough competition.
Maybe SA, but Suze has worked hard at it and at $181,000 pa, it has been something to strive for.
Simon Watts = ‘The Ostrich’ MP for sticking his head in the sand
One wonders who the choir boy was Doocy caught nudenut with, to enable him to keep his cabinet job

And in Starmer news. It has been reported the former UK PM/twat wants to take over from Paul Rutte as head of NATO. 🙄
The fight for the role will be interesting handbags at dawn anyone?
Have they asked Trump?
By the time they do, NATO will be buggerred.
Ukraine has drained them dry, and Trump wants his money back.

Another good policy
A $billion funnel for those who’ve found it nice to come home to retire while they’ve paid taxes somewhere else.
Life choices have consequences.
Another reason to vote for NZF 🤨
I think it’s awesome the MSM aren’t hounding Hipkins about poll results and whether he should go.///

HUSBAND: “Now you’re getting it.”
WIFE: “Wow, I had no idea…”
Orange man good.

Cold winters, however, are very real.”
hahaha. Russia knows a bit about harsh winters.
Thats bullshit. Ask any ai and see.
The euro’s will be running out of milk as well. so aussie and NZ should do well this year provided we don’y have a drought.
looks like AFD have won their state in Germany.

Congrats AFD.
A spokesman said another state in Germany goes to polls in two weeks time which AFD is expected to also take.
Or does it simply not want to rock the boat before voters return to the polls?
https://www.facebook.com/?ref=tn_tnmn
There are 3.6 million enrolled voters in NZ.
Since 1993 there have been approximately 1253 political opinion polls with an average of over 1000 people polled.
How come I don’t have any friend of family that have been polled in 30 years?
I wonder who gets polled.
The more interesting question and something to fll your day.
Comparing those polls and the actual result.
What was the accuracy of the polls?
Bloody piss poor IIRC.
AI can do that for you.
