Defence Force’s $490m housing upgrade for Waiouru military camp
The New Zealand Defence Force is moving ahead with a $490 million expansion and upgrade of housing at its military training base in Waiouru.
The first $75m stage of the project will build 50 new homes for military families on newly developed land in partnership with local iwi Ngāti Rangi.
The Defence Force says it needs 211 homes to support military and civilian personnel at Waiouru Military Camp.
It plans to modernise a further 161 homes in a second stage.
The poor state of Defence Force housing has made headlines in recent years, with homes described as cold and damp.

People on their restricted driver’s licence will now be able to apply to become a police officer following changes to NZ Police’s eligibility criteria.
The changes, announced today, will allow applicants to apply while on their restricted licence, Assistant Commissioner Jill Rogers said.
However, successful applicants will need to obtain a full licence before beginning their training.
It’s expected to increase the potential pool of new recruits by thousands of people, with more than 250,000 people currently holding a restricted licence in New Zealand.
The changes also include a return to the 2017 eligibility criteria which allows people who hold a residency visa allowing them to work in New Zealand to apply.

Leighton Smith has George Friedman on today. I starting listening to it and it soon became very clear that George is selling the incompetence angle very strongly. At this point I haven’t really formed an opinion. Occam’s razor would say the the simplest conclusion is an inside job but then Hanlon’s razor reminds me that we shouldn’t attribute malice when things can be explained by incompetence. European Commission was wrong to redact Covid vaccine deal details: EU court
The European Commission was wrong to redact details of multi-billion-euro deals it struck to secure Covid vaccines during the coronavirus pandemic, an EU court said on Wednesday.
The commission failed to show how divulging indemnification details would harm the commercial interests of the pharmaceutical groups supplying the vaccines, the EU General Court ruled.
It also failed a “public interest” test by keeping secret the names of the EU officials involved, the court said.
The ruling hands a victory to EU lawmakers and individuals who had requested the details from 2.7 billion euros’ ($2.95 billion)) worth of Covid vaccine purchase agreements the commission had negotiated in 2020-2021.
The commission — run by President Ursula von der Leyen, who is in trouble separately for allegedly keeping secret and deleting text messages with the boss of Pfizer over vaccine purchases — had offered only redacted versions of the contracts it had signed.
It argued that releasing the blacked-out details would jeopardise the commercial relationships with the pharmaceutical companies, notably where it came to liability and indemnification in the event of vaccine defects.
