Mike’s Minute: A deeper dive into the PISA numbers
As big of a fan as I am of good news, something wasn’t right in the latest PISA report.
Like all reports, you can look at stats in any number of ways.
For example, if you want to feel good about yourself have a look at the Australian results. They’re not good.
So for a bit of Trans-Tasman rivalry, their numbers will give you no end of good vibes.
The socio-economic gap the Government talked up seems real, so that’s indisputably good.
But I have two major worries:
We look good because essentially, we went nowhere, and we went nowhere against an OECD that went backwards. Standing knee-deep while others drown doesn’t seem to me to be a thing.
I mean you’ll take it. But I would’ve thought that comparing yourself to the ordinary is not quite as fulfilling as actually moving forward.
But the really big one is the OECD going backwards, and the ‘why’.
I surmise the ‘why’ is the death of critical thinking. Kids no longer think for themselves and it’s only going to get worse.
The reports raise issues around disruptive classrooms, the old screen-time issue, and of course the fact that kids don’t read.
This is global. We have multiple generations of non-readers and reading is the key to everything.
Mix the lack of reading with AI, which will answer whatever you want, and basically, we are headed for intellectual oblivion.
Like the calculator before it, technological advance is efficient and gets you the answer.
But the link to critical thinking is “do you know the answer is right”?
Of course you don’t and you don’t care either.
No one asks questions No one is inquiring. The rise of gormlessness is frightening.
It’s there in the PISA reports – our kids are going backwards. Not reading, not adding and not firing up the ol’ brains.
Nothing has changed, has it? All you old ones are the same.
In the intellectual swamp that is global education, we aren’t too bad. So instead of worrying about that, we decide to pretend it’s a good news story.
But being okay, or average, in a world of the hopeless isn’t what I call achieving.

Reaching Net Zero by 2050 would require mining 4.5 million tons of copper, 940 million tons of nickel, 9 billion tons of graphite, and 4 million tons of germanium.
At current global mining rates, that scale of extraction would take more than 1,000 years.
Mining capacity cannot be multiplied by orders of magnitude in just 24 years. Permitting timelines alone are measured in decades, and energy inputs rise as deposits degrade.
Most constraints are physical, not political.
Net Zero targets violate material reality.

The world isn’t particularly short of copper but at https://natural-resources.canada.ca/minerals-mining/mining-data-statistics-analysis/minerals-metals-facts/nickel-facts they reckon that in 2024, “global nickel reserves were estimated at over 130 million tonnes.”
The pressure will be on to meet demand for germanium too. 118 tonnes were produced in 2011. It retails at about $800/Kg.
Supply & demand is going to somewhat complicate the dreams of the net zero wankers.
Not going to happen in NZ, even if it it was lying on top of the ground.

Election 2026: Act Party releases its list, Paul Henry ranking
Former broadcaster Paul Henry has made the top five of the Act Party’s 2026 election list.
Henry, who was announced as an Act list-only candidate in July and has toured New Zealand in recent weeks holding public meetings, has been given the fourth spot.
He follows leader David Seymour, deputy Nicole McKee, and current Biosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard.
Children’s Minister Karen Chhour is ranked fifth, followed by current MP Todd Stephenson, who is currently a Parliamentary Private Secretary for Associate Health Minister Seymour.
James Christmas, the former National candidate and Beehive staffer who is running in Tāmaki, is placed at seventh. He is replacing Brooke van Velden as Act’s candidate in the seat.
Van Velden currently holds the electorate but is stepping down from politics. Her departure, as well as that of Mark Cameron, has created two spots for new candidates near the top of the list.
After Christmas is Simon Court, the current Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Minister for Infrastructure and RMA Reform.
He is followed by MPs Laura McClure and Parmjeet Parmar.
In the eleventh spot is Iain Murray, the next non-MP. He is the party’s Selwyn candidate, is a former airman with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and is currently a school principal.
Cameron Luxton is the last current MP on the list, ranked at 12.
“Act is brimming with talent, and we’ve got a team of New Zealanders ready to build on what we’ve achieved this term and unlock New Zealand’s potential,” said Seymour.
“Our list is a true representation of New Zealand society. There are tradies, engineers, farmers, small business owners, hunters, legal experts, health professionals, school principals and more. Speaking of Hoggard being placed at third, up from fifth in 2023, Seymour said he’d been critical in driving the party’s rural work.
“Andrew Hoggard has been the driving force behind cutting red tape and bringing common sense to climate policy this term. His promotion is recognition for the work he’s done and the continued importance of having an authentic farmer standing up for rural New Zealand.”
The most recent NZ Herald – Motu Research Poll of Polls, released earlier this week, had Act on 7.5%, which would give the party nine seats. It currently holds 11.
Another high profile candidate is Davina Smolders. She is an Act councillor in the Far North District Council and captured national headlines after raising concerns about the rights being given to unelected people on council committees. The Government later said it would move to stop unelected people being able to vote on the committees.
Smolders previously said that she would resign from the council if she secured a position in the top 10 or 11 places on the Act list for the election.
However, she has been ranked at 18 on Act’s list.
