Christchurch EV charger maker Evnex expands as EV sales boom
ripple effect in Addington.
US President Donald Trump might have called electric vehicle drivers “crazy”.
But his foreign policy has pushed up petrol prices and diesel prices, triggering a surge in EV sales this year and, in turn, a boom in demand for smart chargers for homes and business car parks.
“It’s just been nuts,” says Evnex founder and chief executive Ed Harvey.
Harvey’s firm recently sold its 20,000th charger.
It took 13 years to shift its first 10,000, but just nine months to sell its second.
It’s been an export success story, too, with around 70% of sales offshore, primarily to Australia.
Together, Evnex chargers have now delivered more than 75 GWh (gigawatt hours) of electricity to New Zealand and Australian EVs, it says.
We chatted over time about batteries and chargers and cars.
This is a Kiwi success story, and while it’s quite a long read, well informed.
The Law is changing in October, I think, so that power companies have to allow you to buy according to 30-minute time frames on the spot market.
Christchurch-based building sector analyst Mike Blackburn has named the five busiest house-building businesses in his city, finding the 33-year-old Mike Greer Homes topping the list.
Blackburn found the sector extremely busy, with 4711 new residential dwellings consented in the Christchurch city area in the year to June 2026.
That was up 27.9% on the 3684 residences consented in the year to June, 2025.
Blackburn says the top five Christchurch residential builders, based on annual consents sought for homes in the year to June 2026 are:
Mike Greer Homes: 216 consents sought, average floor area 156sq m, average home value $397,000.Williams Corporation: 191 consents sought, average floor area 54sq m, average home value $146,000;Wolfbrook Residential: 131 consents sought, average floor area 128sq m, average home value $336,000;Four Avenues: 103 consents sought, average floor area 77sq m, average home value $233,000;Brooksfield Homes: 98 consents sought, average floor area 116sq m, average home value $381,000.Executive director Mike Greer is the majority owner of the eponymous business.
Boom. Here comes the recovery led by the south and regions such as Canterbury.
Canterbury and Otago share the lowest unemployment rates in the country, at 3.6%. The national figure is 5.4% with a massive divergence between the North Island (6%) and the South Island (3.7%).
Go south to get a job, set up a business, get a tertiary education or buy a house. And – dare I say it – a more relaxed lifestyle, with less tension across society. That’s a powerful combination.
Business creation
If you want an indicator that tells a simple economic story, look no further than growth in the number of businesses. Businesses create jobs and invest. They are the engine room of real growth. Employment impacts housing needs. If you shift into a region, you enrol kids in a local school.
Canterbury is on a roll. The region has seen an 8.6% rise in the number of businesses in the past three years. The only region to outshine Canterbury is Otago, which has seen 9.95%.
Our son lives in Rolleston and I have to admit they did a good job of it. I can remember when it was a dump with a prison on the other side of the highway. Growing like topsy now.
Had a tradie in yesterday, and he had been there last weekend. Said the town was humming. but bloody cold. so like a pommy place; cold as fuck, so all go to the pub to get warm, dressed up in ya wolly coats. Sheep country.
I find it incredible that this woman, finally after five or six decades riding Planet Earth around the sun, has struck on the way to get men to do work around the house. There it was, about halfway through the clip, the stark revelation……
There was a papa mole, a mamma mole, and a baby mole. They lived in a hole out in the country near a farmhouse. Papa mole poked his head out of the hole and said, “Mmmm, I smell sausage!” Mamma mole poked her head outside the hole and said, “Mmmm, I smell pancakes!” Baby mole tried to stick his head outside but couldn’t because of the two bigger moles. Baby mole said, “The only thing I smell is molasses.”
Regrettably I can’t link to an article on RCR Bites in which Ex National MP & now NZ First Candidate for Wanganui, Harete Hipongo-Browlie blows the whistle on the shenanigans the Nats engaged in during the Covid scam.
Selected extracts:
#. “she wanted to meet the protestors at Parliament but was told by the party not to engage.”
#. “Hipongo-Brownlie said a few months prior she attended a peaceful protest in Whanganui, put up a social media post supporting it, and within an hour was contacted by National’s hierarchy and told to take it down. Her turning point was hearing National’s “powers on high” refer to the protestors as “nothing but tinfoil nutters”. ”
She shows a touching naivety when she talks of a time when she thought that National had principles:
#. “”It was the antithesis of all of those core values I believed the National Party to hold,” she said.”
And the first take-away:
#. “Hipango-Brownlie described the current National Government as “left-leaning and woke”.”
The second is that we who were described as tinfoil nutters are still here, we haven’t forgotten & we still have a vote!
stupid boy is stoked, finally got my solar setup running.
quite a mission really but thats mainly due to sb having the silly idea to ground mount the panels… that creates a whole heap of extra work and costs that rooftop solar avoids but the benefits make it fully worth the hastle and cost.
anyways 940am and its already pumping out 10kw and the batteries should be charged by lunchtime 🙂 best be a good summer so the fucker can start paying itself off!
The rules are changing come October. Currently the big shits have control over rates but that is changing and you cna access to 30 minute tie pricing so you will be able to say charge when the price is X and stop when the price is Y. They are all avoiding talking a bout it but they have no choice.
By spending the extra & putting in batteries you should get a real payback even in sun starved Southland. When the power companies offer between 5cents to 24 cents buyback on excess peak power the sums simply don’t add up.
yep thats the plan, the panels only just got connected last night but the inverter and batts have been running a few days.
ive just been charging off night rate (½price) and using it during day time, ill do that through winter when its grey and shut and at least 50% charge overnight.
ill be adding another battery by xmas too and thatll take my storage to 45kwh and minimise grid import/export.
Be careful , if you are semi rural and some of the transmission line is just for you ,and you dont actually use enough electricity you may find your lines charges go through the roof.
LLOYD BUDD NEEDS A VISIT TO THE LUXON CLIMATE LIBRARY
It sounds like Christopher Luxon needs to have a serious talk with National’s new Whangārei candidate Lloyd Budd.
After all, we’ve seen this movie before.
When National MP Maureen Pugh questioned the evidence for human-caused climate change in 2023, she was quickly supplied with reading material by the National leadership and subsequently accepted that human activity was contributing to climate change.
Now Budd might need the same treatment.
Budd originally gave Newsroom a remarkably straightforward answer when asked whether he believed in global warming: “I don’t think so, no.”
He then raised an interesting argument about urban intensification, concrete, drainage and development making flooding considerably worse.
Hours later, however, the political emergency appeared to have arrived.
Suddenly Budd announced: “Rest assured, I do believe that climate change is manmade.”
Christopher Luxon welcomed the “clarification.”
Perhaps Budd’s next appointment will be at the Luxon Climate Re-Education Library, where the shelves presumably contain an ever-expanding collection of compulsory reading entitled: CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL — VOLUMES 1–47
Lesson One: Never give a straight answer before checking the party position.
Lesson Two: If you accidentally do, issue a “clarification.”
Lesson Three: Wait for Luxon to announce that the matter has been dealt with.
The funny thing is that buried underneath Budd’s political backtrack was a perfectly legitimate question.
How much flood damage is being made worse by councils permitting intensification, covering land with concrete, changing natural drainage systems and allowing development in vulnerable locations?
Accepting human-caused climate change doesn’t make those questions disappear.
But Budd has probably learned his first important lesson as a future National MP: When you wander off script, expect a call from the principal — followed by some recommended reading from Christopher Luxon’s ever-expanding climate-change library.
That Lloyd Budd seems quite normal, he drinks in the fishing club, owns a boat and talks to everyone he can. Can’t be worse than Shane Reti who’s greatest claim to fame in the last 3 years is making us all wear life jackets. He won’t be missed.
Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, the greatest living Russian of our times, cant wait to see what he does to the Cocaine Clown Zelensky, hopefully there will be a bit of Impalement involved

It is unfortunate that the map of Yugoslavia refers to Northern Macedonia as Macedonia. Macedonia is a province west of Thessaloniki in northern Greece. The Greeks are shit scared that some deranged towel heads will want to grab that part of Macedonia west of Salonica.

Why are we not surprized, so many of will not pay for the Horrid & wretched Stuff.
All to point to bad things in the health system, that even occurred during the Labour government.
Ani O’Brien shows up the stench of their vomit, they keep regurgitating.
So it seems “if the dates are missing, then it happened under Labour.”
Die media die ! ! & stop cruelly resurrecting the dead,
Die media die.
@aniobrien I again ask that NZ Herald include a date or timeframe in its headlines because this happened in 2022 with the woman dying in May 2023. This is one of many articles that are about dire situations in our health system but it is obscured that it happened under the previous govt. https://x.com/aniobrien/status/2099414203983671784
Though at this stage it seems that Ani has not time yet to put this into her substack with more detail & then to check back on possible other stretches by ommission of dates.
So the journalists, editors etc., are systemically milking peoples woes & the many issues in the health system.
Die media die
Many years ago when the now Mrs IAASB was scoping out prospective partners she sees our feral hero sneaking off one night & decides to investigate.
She follows his trail & finds him furiously humping a tree-trunk that has a curiously well-used looking hole in it. Initially disgusted, she’s mollified thinking, “At least he wasn’t doing it with animals like everybody else claimed. This was his best way to relieve stress for all those years.”
At that point, she decides IAASB need not go through that ordeal ever again.
The next night, she sits next to the gate, all dolled up & inviting, legs spread wide open, waiting for IAASB. When he finally makes his appearance, he sees her & makes an enquiring hoot to which she replies, “I know where you’re headed off to, you don’t need to suffer through that indignity anymore now that I’m here”, while gesturing to herself.
He looks her up & down considering, then nods his head, comes running at a full sprint & kicks her right in the crotch.
She, now rolling around in agony, anticipation all forgotten, asks him with tears in her eyes, “…why?”
An Open Letter to Every Member of Parliament: The Democratic to End Treaty Legislation
** MAORI MUST UNDERSTAND IT IS THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE THAT DON’T WANT TO BE CONTROLLED BY THE TREATY OF WAITANGI AND THE LAWS IT INSTILS. THE NATIONS MAJORITY WANT THE TREATY TO BE REMOVED FROM ALL LAWS AND ALL CLAIMS THEREOF.
To Every Member of Parliament,
This editorial addresses you directly on behalf of the democratic majority of New Zealand. For decades, the political establishment has allowed a framework of inferred obligations, separate systems, and specialized funding to dominate public policy. The public has been vocal, clear, and determined: New Zealanders demand an end to laws that create separate categories of citizenship and mandate specialized treatment based on race or ancestry.
The current system has created a deep division, fuelled by protests that consistently blame the government rather than acknowledging the shifting will of the broader electorate. A growing majority of citizens hold no reverence for historical Crown arrangements or the modern expansions of the Treaty of Waitangi, viewing them as having no constructive place in the day-to-day lives of a modern, unified population. The sentiment among taxpayers is firm: there is no longer a willingness to subsidise separate Maori groups, trusts, maraes, or iwi operations through public coffers or specialised funding mechanisms like targeted lottery grants. Every group and institution must pay their own way based entirely on their direct contribution, without reliance on taxpayer-funded handouts or historical preference.
To achieve a framework of true statutory equality where all citizens stand on identical legal footing, Parliament must shift away from piecemeal amendments and enact a single, comprehensive piece of legislation.
The Necessary Legislative Remedy: The Equal Citizenship and Treaty Repeal Act
To completely remove the Treaty of Waitangi from New Zealand’s active legal frameworks, Parliament must pass a blanket statute—which can be titled the Equal Citizenship and Treaty Repeal Act—encompassing the following components:
1. Total Repeal of the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975: This will formally dissolve the Waitangi Tribunal and remove its jurisdiction over both historical and contemporary public policy.
2. Omnibus Removal of All Treaty Principles: The Act must feature a blanket clause that automatically repeals every statutory requirement directing government agencies, local councils, or private entities to “give effect to,” “honour,” or “take into account” the principles of the Treaty. This would instantly strip out provisions across all existing statutes, including the Conservation Act 1987, the State-Owned Enterprises Act 1986, and the Crown Minerals Act 1991.
3. Abolition of Race-Based Funding and Structures: A statutory ban on the allocation of public funds, tax exemptions, or dedicated gaming grants to trusts, iwi corporate structures, or cultural entities based on ethnic identity.
4. Codification of Legal Uniformity: Establishing a strict statutory rule that all citizens possess identical fundamental rights, ensuring that no individual or group is granted distinct legal status, co-governance roles, or separate consultation privileges under public law.
The message to our elected representatives is simple and unembellished. The public expects its politicians to do their bidding and uphold the democratic majority. It is time to pass blanket legislation that clears the Treaty from our laws entirely and moves New Zealand forward under one universal rule of law for all.

JD Vance goes after corporations putting migrants ahead of American workers. It’s time for NZ to have a MNZGA govt who values kiwis
August featured a substantial decline in residential property sales, deepening what was already a significant slump.
The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) recorded 5430 residential sales in August, down 13% compared to August last year. That’s the sixth lowest number of sales the REINZ has recorded in the month of August in data going back 35 years.
The biggest decline was in Gisborne, where sales numbers were down 35%.
The slump also affected all the main urban regions with sales in Auckland down 15%, Waikato down 19%, Bay of Plenty down 1%, Wellington Region down 14%, Canterbury 10% lower and Otago down 24%.
The median days to sell figure jumped to 51 days, up three days on August last year. That was the fourth-highest days-to-sell figure for the month of August ever recorded by the REINZ.
In addition to the reduction in sales, REINZ members also received 5% fewer new listings in August year-on-year, suggesting both buyers and sellers are being extremely cautious.
Even with the decline in new listings, there were a total of 32,908 residential properties available for sale through REINZ members at the end of August, up 9.7% compared to the same time last year. This suggests a very strong buyer’s market had developed leading up to spring.
ACT wants to freeze the minimum wage for three years, create a training wage set at 60% of the adult minimum wage for all workers under 20, shorten time limits for personal grievances and end the compulsory employer collection of union membership fees.
ACT small business spokesperson Laura McClure said the party was “committed to going further to cut costs placed upon businesses, and make it easier to comply with our regulatory settings.”
“Laws designed to improve pay and conditions haven’t done the job. Truly higher wages require businesses that can grow,” she said. “ACT’s policies will grow productivity so people can genuinely take home more at the end of the week.”
ACT’s promise included a three year freeze on minimum wage increases, saying it had “outpaced productivity.”
Set the training wage – which would be for workers under 20 for the first year of working for an employer – at 60% of the minimum wage.
Allow protected employment exit negotiations “without triggering a personal grievance simply by starting the conversation.”
Decrease the time limit for personal grievances, with a requirement for personal grievance proceedings to be lodged within three months of it being raised.
End compulsory employer collection of union membership fees.
Recognise modern digital investment as depreciable property the same as physical investment.
The current minimum wage is $23.95 an hour, with the starting out and training minimum wages at $19.16 an hour.
The starting out minimum age is for certain young employees under 20, and the training wage applies to worker over 20, usually for the likes of apprentices, both set at 80% of the minimum wage.
The latest Statistics NZ labour market figures show the underutilisation rate for 15 to 24-year-olds rose to 37% from 34% in the 12 months to June, with the number of underutilised people in this age group rising 21,600 annually to 180,200.
The largest increase in underutilisation for this group came from unemployment, up 12,200. The underutilisation rate measures the untapped capacity in the labour market. ACT leader talks minimum wage and NEETs
Asked if ACT could guarantee that this policy would reduce the number of young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEETs), party leader David Seymour told reporters at Wellington’s Tākina convention centre: “There is no question. If you create another opportunity for people who are not in employment, education and training to work, more people will work.”
“How many people will take advantage of this policy to employ more young people and give them a chance? That is impossible to know, but it will be better than we are now,” Seymour said.
Asked how confident ACT was about its policy (which it also proposed in 2023) getting through in any potential future coalition agreement, Seymour said they had been consistent.
“The ACT Party can be accused of many things but we’ve never been accused of inconsistency.”
If people looked at what ACT’s Brooke van Velden, as Minister Workplace Relations and Safety, had delivered, there had been much smaller increases in the minimum wage than the previous government, he said.
“So we have done a really good job of containing those increases to be fair to business. I believe that we can go further and so we put out this policy again. Last time it got us minimal increases, this time I suspect it might get us zero increases.”
On the cost of living crisis and people on minimum wage, Seymour said: “There’s no question that we have a challenge with the cost of living but people on minimum wage are not the people you think they are.”
“They’re not people who are head of household, and the very few who are – less than 10% – those people are getting tax credits to help them with the cost of living crisis.”
“If I wanted to help the most hard-up New Zealanders, based on the numbers, the last thing I would do is increase the minimum wage. It puts cost right through business, but it doesn’t actually direct the help to the people who have the most problems with the cost of living crisis,” he said.
Asked what he would say to people who were hoping to get a bump in their minimum wage, Seymour said you can’t pass a law to become wealthy.
“You can only invest and innovate. The law is there to create the opportunity to have a go. But higher wages can’t come from the Government just legislating up … We tried legislating up wages under the Labour government. All we got was inflation.”
you wont be happy unless youth rates are under $5 an hour.
as for the min wage freeze, why stop there? why not index it to productivity/gdp per capita.
the ending employer collection of union fees is a good one, finally someones thinking.
with cost of living, if employees got a monthly or yearly invoice of their union fees im sure quite a few will ditch it. when its taken out before it hits their account it dosent hurt as much cuz theyre in a way not paying it themselves… fuck the unions
Youth rates from school leaving age (16YO) to 18YO which is considered adult seems eminently sensible. Was much the same in the 1960s until some halfwit got the idea that a school leaver automatically had the work output & value to an employer as a seasoned hand.
When introduced the near abolishment of youth rates resulted in higher wages for a few & unemployment for many.
fuck off back into the scrub.
Starting at 60% is about right, but it needs a training program and regular ups in the rates. i.e. indexing it to productivity.
Bugger me, you even managed to get that right.
That’s not hard to do, nor is it hard to measure these days.
It should be the same for all wages.
Protection for those on the youth rates.
How the hell else are we going to recover our young people and stop bringing in immigrants?
When it comes to using your brain in a workplace, you should be on the low wage rate.
then youll be all confused why young folk continue to flee to aussie etc and you still get stuck hiring kumar.
minimum wage should be a floor not a target like so many kiwi employers think it is.
any half decent employee should be paid far more but many arent, the problem isnt the min wage or youth rates… the problem is the fucking miserable, shit kiwi employers.
this is 2026 not the 1970s, pay your staff a decent wage, give the good ones a few extra perks and bonuses and pay min wage to the young cuz your adult staff should be at least $35 per hour esp if theyre as good as you claim they are. only a stinking adult kumar should be on the min wage.
Former New Zealand First MP and prominent Northland educator Jim Peters, the older brother of party leader Winston Peters, has died.
The New Zealand First party announced his death in a social media post this afternoon.
“It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of New Zealand First Life Member and former Member of Parliament, Jim Peters MNZM,” the post read.
“Jim dedicated his life to public service, education, and regional development. A widely respected educator, he shaped countless young minds throughout his career.”
A renowned educator, he served as a Head of Department at Mount Albert Grammar School in Auckland, a Principal at Northland College in Kaikohe.

Given the amount of taxpayers’ money spent there, it should be going gang busters. Taken how long and they are still fixing broken homes.
Our son lives in Rolleston and I have to admit they did a good job of it. I can remember when it was a dump with a prison on the other side of the highway. Growing like topsy now.

The truth about men
https://x.com/kthopkins/status/2099547018905690407?s=12
I find it incredible that this woman, finally after five or six decades riding Planet Earth around the sun, has struck on the way to get men to do work around the house. There it was, about halfway through the clip, the stark revelation……
“I never even Nagged”.
Friend: “Why is your wife so upset with you?”
Me: “She asked me who I’d choose for a threesome if I had the chance.”
Friend: “Oh? Let me guess… you picked one of her friends?”
Me: “Two of her friends…”
Be careful , if you are semi rural and some of the transmission line is just for you ,and you dont actually use enough electricity you may find your lines charges go through the roof.
plenty of big dairy sheds, barns and grain complex around me.
the grid is congested around here, still dosent stop them ripping me 4bux a day tho.
Trump is an babe in the woods compared to NZ. In 1988 we had 13,000 products under tariffs. Some as high as 60%.
And some families with import licences got very wealthy.
Went hunting a couple of times with the guys with one of the running shoe imports. Seriously wealthy until that rort got stopped.

Budd originally gave Newsroom a remarkably straightforward answer when asked whether he believed in global warming:
“I don’t think so, no.”
He then raised an interesting argument about urban intensification, concrete, drainage and development making flooding considerably worse.
Hours later, however, the political emergency appeared to have arrived.
Suddenly Budd announced:
“Rest assured, I do believe that climate change is manmade.”
Christopher Luxon welcomed the “clarification.”
Perhaps Budd’s next appointment will be at the Luxon Climate Re-Education Library, where the shelves presumably contain an ever-expanding collection of compulsory reading entitled:
CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL — VOLUMES 1–47
Lesson One: Never give a straight answer before checking the party position.
Lesson Two: If you accidentally do, issue a “clarification.”
Lesson Three: Wait for Luxon to announce that the matter has been dealt with.
The funny thing is that buried underneath Budd’s political backtrack was a perfectly legitimate question.
How much flood damage is being made worse by councils permitting intensification, covering land with concrete, changing natural drainage systems and allowing development in vulnerable locations?
Accepting human-caused climate change doesn’t make those questions disappear.
But Budd has probably learned his first important lesson as a future National MP:
When you wander off script, expect a call from the principal — followed by some recommended reading from Christopher Luxon’s ever-expanding climate-change library.
That Lloyd Budd seems quite normal, he drinks in the fishing club, owns a boat and talks to everyone he can. Can’t be worse than Shane Reti who’s greatest claim to fame in the last 3 years is making us all wear life jackets. He won’t be missed.

It is unfortunate that the map of Yugoslavia refers to Northern Macedonia as Macedonia. Macedonia is a province west of Thessaloniki in northern Greece. The Greeks are shit scared that some deranged towel heads will want to grab that part of Macedonia west of Salonica.

All to point to bad things in the health system, that even occurred during the Labour government.
Ani O’Brien shows up the stench of their vomit, they keep regurgitating.
@aniobrien
Another headline on the front page that looks like a current failing of the health system but which occurred in 2021.
https://x.com/aniobrien/status/2099584483276329347
So it seems “if the dates are missing, then it happened under Labour.”
Die media die ! ! & stop cruelly resurrecting the dead,
Die media die.
@aniobrien
I again ask that NZ Herald include a date or timeframe in its headlines because this happened in 2022 with the woman dying in May 2023.
IAASB shrugs, “Checking for wetas.”
Even I wouldn’t post that. It’s terrible.

All we got was inflation.”
https://www.interest.co.nz/business/140248/act-wants-freeze-minimum-wage-create-training-wage-set-60-youth-workers-arguing
A half cocked proposal that is a bit better than none at all.
you wont be happy unless youth rates are under $5 an hour.
as for the min wage freeze, why stop there? why not index it to productivity/gdp per capita.
the ending employer collection of union fees is a good one, finally someones thinking.
with cost of living, if employees got a monthly or yearly invoice of their union fees im sure quite a few will ditch it. when its taken out before it hits their account it dosent hurt as much cuz theyre in a way not paying it themselves… fuck the unions
