“Cold Duck” or “Dead Duck” as my old F-I-L ordered one night. A fizzy red. Sounded great but tasted like varnish stripper.

STRATEGIC VOTING. An impassioned plea.
A simple explanation, and why it is essential we do it. Very simply.
Back in the day politics was a hell of a lot simpler than it is now. We voted for a party and they became the govt or didn’t.
Then MMP came along with all the best of intentions but it created list MPs and every nutter in the asylum was let free and the tail literally wagged the dog. Who can forget the kingmaker in 2017..?
Two ticks for the one party was fine, if it was a sure thing that the left or the right was going to get elected and you wanted a prominent party in that government.
Not any more folks, we have a diabolical monster on the loose and thanks to MMP and a National party that was too arrogant to even input rule number 1/…. do what your voters voted you in to do, we have this impending disaster.
And you better believe it, if this goes the wrong way it will change this country for all time. It will without doubt become an overtaxed hell hole with your money going to Iwi to impose their rule and barbaric lifestyles on us all. He Puapua is the aim and they will finish the job this time. This could well be the last honest, democratic election we get. Imagine the local marae running the election from now on..!! Remember Manurewa marae do you..??

Approx 73% of the country don’t want a bar of National, they ignored their voters and put co governance wolves in sheeps clothing like Potaka and Simon Watts on the front bench, possibly the most dangerous MP’s in the Nat team since Chris Finlayson, and that’s saying something.
Strategic voting is all about the overhang, getting more seats in parliament than usual and all going to one side. With TOP at close to 5%, we don’t have the luxury of voting any other way. So what is it..?
Put very simply there are two votes for everyone, party vote and electorate vote. If a party get say 20% of the party vote, let’s say for simplicity sake they get 20 seats out of the 120 in parliament.
If they then get 15 electorates..members elected to a seat thru the electorate… then they still only get the 20 seats of the party vote, but they have to make up the 5 seats from the LIST, and that is where a lot of the numpties come from..but not all..see Simon Watts and Potaka, Te partly Maori, all of the Greens etc.
So you can be wasting your vote giving a right wing party the electorate as well as the party vote, esp if they have a strong party vote.
Now then, the good bit.
If a party gets, say 20 seats off the party vote…but then gets 25 electorates…they KEEP the extra 5 seats…and that is called the overhang. Parliament grows 5 seats to the right (hopefully)
So if you give your ELECTORATE seat to National it will guarantee them those seats in parliament.
If you then give your PARTY vote to ACT or NZF, then it bolsters their seats as well. The electorate seat is not wasted and the party vote isn’t either, the right get extra seats thru the overhang.
Then TOP can go back to secret dinners with Labour and the Greens can go back to the asylum.
Now then, the Nats are going to tell you two ticks National, that is because they are blue suited stuffy conservatives that got us into this mess in the first place. They have no ears and wouldn’t have the humility to admit that we need something from the thinking voter to swing us back into sanity territory, and all thanks to them.
They had the chance, they had our mandate to change it back to where it was and they blew it. This is a good chance to teach the Nats a well deserved lesson while keeping them in govt, albeit less powerful and arrogant.
So there it is folks, it is up to us voters to use our brains for a change and get moving on strategic votes to get our govt back into a non tribal democracy.
If we don’t, the emigration and immigration ships will be overflowing from first class to steerage come Nov 7th. Those that are left will be living circa 1820.

Commercial bread and beer i would agree. You do have to use some interesting chemicals on oats as half of what you use on wheat will feck them.
Hubby makes our bread in his bread maker. Different texture and tastes delicious like the old style chubby loaves. He also produces a mixed seed loaf and delicious raisin bread. 💕😋

THE COWARDLY SILENCE: Why the Left-Wing Media Cartel Is Burying the MMP Debate
The mainstream press gallery has completely lost its nerve. When Prime Minister Christopher Luxon first suggested giving New Zealanders a vote on our broken electoral system, the media machine went into a state of absolute panic. Since then, the entire topic has gone dead quiet.
The silence is calculated. The left-leaning media establishment knows that if MMP is abolished or reformed, their role as the country’s chief political kingmakers disappears. They are deliberately burying the debate to protect their own outsized influence over our democracy.
The Left-Wing Media Protection Racket
Political journalism thrives on manufactured drama. Under MMP, the left-wing media has successfully weaponised the system by amplifying radical, single-issue activist groups and giving them massive airtime.
Their strategy is entirely predictable:
The Hit Job: They dedicate endless headlines to hyper-analysing and denigrating the Prime Minister’s leadership.The Pivot: They instantly run to the Opposition left-wing parties to get a counter-quote, inflating their importance and giving them uncritical platforms.The Goal: By keeping the political landscape fragmented, the media remains the ultimate referee, deciding which fringe ideas get legitimised.If New Zealand returned to a majoritarian system where the majority rules without being held hostage by micro-parties, the media’s power to manipulate coalition narratives would be completely neutralised.
The $55 Million Ideological Capture
This institutional bias did not happen by accident. The media’s hostility toward right-of-centre governments is the direct legacy of the previous Labour government’s $55 million Public Interest Journalism Fund (PIJF). Defended heavily by Willie Jackson, this fund came with strict, legally binding conditions in the small print.
To get the cash, newsrooms had to explicitly promote a specific constitutional narrative regarding Te Tiriti o Waitangi. This effectively forced journalists to push a left-wing, activist worldview to keep their pockets lined. Even though that specific fund has ended, the newsroom cultures it permanently warped are still running the show. They do not need secret cash in brown envelopes today because the ideological capture is already complete.
Reclaiming Democracy with a 17.5% Threshold
MMP has turned Parliament into a playground for unruly, irrational activists who command a tiny fraction of public support but dictate terms to the entire nation. It simply does not suit New Zealand’s political landscape.
To strip power away from the media-activist alliance, New Zealand needs a radical derivation of the system: raising the parliamentary entry grade to 17.5 percent, mirroring the simplicity of the GST rate.
The Current Broken System (5% Threshold):
Allows small fringe groups to sneak into Parliament via the 5% threshold or a single electorate backdoor seat.Forces major parties into chaotic, fragmented multi-party coalitions.Gives minor-party radicals total leverage to hold the entire country hostage during coalition talks.The Restored Mainstream System (17.5% Threshold):
Completely abolishes the electorate backdoor rule.Eliminates small, radical fringe parties from holding the balance of power entirely.Focuses power back onto two or three broad-church, mainstream parties that represent actual majorities.The media’s sudden silence on reforming MMP is a calculated move to protect their own outsized political power.
By burying this debate, the left-wing press gallery is actively shielding the broken 5% threshold system that allows them to hype up radical, minor-party activists and manufacture constant coalition drama. Overhauling the system with a strict 17.5% entry bar would permanently break this media-activist alliance, stripping fringe groups of their unearned leverage and restoring true democratic power to the mainstream majority’.

The suspensions bar those borrowers from future SBA loans, disaster loans and the agency’s 8(a) federal contracting program. The ACT Party recently announced a common-sense policy proposal: finish all remaining historical Treaty settlements, strip the Waitangi Tribunal of its contemporary powers, and wind up the Tribunal for good once historical work is completed.
For years, Hobson’s Pledge supporters have seen the Waitangi Tribunal stretch far beyond its original mandate. It was meant to resolve historical grievances, not act as an unelected block on the democratically elected Parliament.
As we approach the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty in 2040, New Zealanders deserve a clear endpoint to the settlement process and a return to one law for all. ACT has shown the courage to lay this policy on the table – now it is up to National and New Zealand First to back it.
We Have Demanded Answers from the LeadersThis week, Hobson’s Pledge sent formal letters directly to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and NZ First Leader Winston Peters.
We asked both leaders directly:
Will you commit to ensuring historical Treaty settlements are truly full and final?
Will you support stripping the Tribunal’s contemporary jurisdiction and disestablishing it once historical claims are resolved?
Will you commit to adopting this as official policy for your parties and in any future coalition agreements?
NZ First and National’s Coalition AgreementHobson’s Pledge wants to acknowledge that in the National Party coalition agreement with NZ First, there is a clear statement to “amend the Waitangi Tribunal legislation to refocus the scope, purpose, and nature of its inquiries back to the original intent of that legislation”.
We welcomed that then, as we still wish to see it progress now. But Hobson’s Pledge wants this to go further and along the lines of ACT’s policy. Amending and limiting the ever-increasing scope of the Tribunal is a good short-term goal. But once the existing Treaty settlements are finished, that should also end the need for the Waitangi Tribunal.
How You Can Action This TodayWe cannot rely on politicians in Wellington to do the right thing on their own. They need to see that hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders expect a clear, permanent resolution to the Treaty settlement process.
Here is how you can help push this over the line:
The Waitangi Tribunal was never intended to exist indefinitely. It is time for our elected Government to step up, complete the settlement process, and unite New Zealand with equal rights for all citizens.
NO MORE DO-OVERS:
No up-dated payouts of already settled historic claims, as has happened in the past.

Without an end date this proposal is useless. Historical/hysterical work will never be completed to the satisfaction of those always claiming more and more.
There needs to be an incentive for remaining claims to be settled, full and final. If you offer money for grievances, you will attract many.

the last place here in nz i worked theyd treat the young like shit and paid the low rate (think was 18 odd bux then) and on a total renumeration contract too… the arrogant pos boss used to get shitty having to retrain someone else on the gear every few weeks cuz they wouldnt usually last the month. i know several of them and keep in touch, except for one that went to telford all went on to 27-35 an hour jobs after leaving.
a few bux an hour is a small price to pay vs the many times retraining, new fed farmers contract, interviewing etc. now they have a shit name and struggle to get applicants.

I’ve only been paid wages twice in my life. First was for a year working for a cocky in 1965. Good employer but wages started at youth minimum plus accommodation with one increase in that year. Can’t recall what for.
Second was the cartage firm I worked for from the time I was 17 until I hit 36. Again started as a yard boy on the then youth minimum then on adult minimum when I obtained my HT licence on my 18th birthday.
From then I went up the pay scale but not much more than award. Non taxable allowances such as meal money, wet weather & an allowances for three dogs were the icing on the cake. Overtime was freely available. Leading hand at 21 then head driver (equivalent of foreman) at 26 saw me on a base weekly wage about 45% above yard adult minimum.
All of which proves fuck all but illustrates that outside of the trades where demand can drive wages, labour & semi skilled labour has always followed a pattern of training then relatively quick movement to adult minimums. Good money is always an outlier mostly because the union position was that if you could afford to pay your best worker well you could pay everyone the same.
It has never made sense but in the ‘jack is as good as his master’ fairytale world of Kiwi unionism it was the normal practise.

Outgoing National MP Andrew Bayly says losing his ministerial positions was among “the most brutal experiences of my life” and led him to a “very dark place”.
The former Commerce and Consumer Affairs minister continues to argue the premise upon which he offered his resignation early last year was “false” and he didn’t face a fair process during “this horrible episode”.
In his valedictory speech in Parliament, Bayly spoke of the impact of that period on his wife, who he said cried when he told her he might have to resign.
“Tina does not cry easily. That was when I understood this was no longer just about a ministerial job. It was hurting the person I loved most.”
Bayly announced earlier this year he would be leaving Parliament after serving as an electorate MP – for Hunua and Port Waikato – since 2014 and a minister at the start of this term.
He stood down from his ministerial portfolios in February 2025 after he admitted he “placed a hand” on a staff member’s arm during an “animated discussion”, something he said had been “inappropriate” and put them in “an uncomfortable position”.
But last October, the MP said he had been misled about the nature of the allegation against him and wouldn’t have resigned had he known the full facts. He said he had learnt no formal complaint had been made against him and a claim the allegation was corroborated by three other people wasn’t correct.
Speaking about the incident during his valedictory speech, Bayly said it had occurred during a “six-minute meeting with three of my advisers”.
“During a brief discussion, I placed my hand on the upper arm of one of my male advisers and said, ‘We can do this.’ Then I left and thought no more about it,” the MP said.
“The next night, I was told a serious allegation had been made. I couldn’t believe it.”
He said that on a later flight he told his wife, Tina, he may have to resign, leading her to cry and his realisation “it was hurting the person I loved most”.
“Next morning, I flew back to Wellington to meet the complainant. When I landed, I was told he was unavailable, but the Department of Internal Affairs wanted to question me. DIA said all three people present – at the meeting – had corroborated the allegation.”
Bayly said that was “critical” as while “I might contest one account, perhaps two”, he believed if three people corroborated an allegation “I could not remain a minister”.
“It was on that premise that I took the decision to resign. That premise was false.
“Just before I announced my resignation, I again asked to speak with the complainant. I wanted to apologise directly for my conduct in the meeting and for making him feel uncomfortable. During that conversation, he told me that he had not made a complaint and would not have done so.”
It’s previously been reported that no formal complaint was ever made against Bayly, according to official documents, and no formal investigation was conducted by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA).
“Ministers must be accountable. I have always believed that. As a Minister, I should not have put my staff in a position where they felt uncomfortable. For that, I sincerely apologise,” Bayly said.
“Accountability must, however, rest on facts and a fair process. Mine did not. I leave others to decide how and why it failed. I put this on the record because it is part of my parliamentary story, but not the whole story.”
He said, “this horrible episode” also revealed “kindness shown by some people”, acknowledging an advisor of his who cut her honeymoon short to be with him and another staff member who returned from retirement to work for him.
“You may not have realised it, but after my resignation I went into a very dark place. To those in this House, and the few journalists, who stopped and asked how I was, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It helped me find my way back.”
Elsewhere in Bayly’s speech, he thanked former National leader Judith Collins for appointing him shadow Treasurer for a period in Opposition, spoke of actions he took as a minister, like advancing work on open banking, and celebrated others done by the Government like financial literacy in schools.
“Ministerial office was one of the greatest privileges of my life. Losing it was one of the most brutal experiences of my life.”
Bayly also highlighted a paper he recently published on superannuation, which included recommending a phased increase to the age of eligibility, linking increases in superannuation to inflation rather than wage growth, and allowing those unable to continue working due to health or physical demand issues to draw a lower pension earlier.
He also had a message for his wife.
“There is something I need to say to you publicly. Politics was my choice. The death threat that named you and our boys was not something you chose.
“I remember ringing you at work. It was already dark. As I told you what had been written, I heard your voice begin to tremble. I am deeply sorry that my public life brought that into yours. You did not choose it. You did not deserve it. And I will always be sorry.”
After 12 years in Parliament, Bayly said he would now be home “every day, with time, and ideas”.
“You have identified this as a significant risk. I am sure that I will have some proposals for reform. However, I suspect none will survive consultation.”

The survival of National’s plan to split up Foodstuffs in future coalition negotiations remains uncertain as the three governing parties take potshots at one another over who came up with the policy and its viability.
The policy, announced by National leader Christopher Luxon and finance spokeswoman Nicola Willis, proposed separating Foodstuffs North Island and Foodstuffs South Island, which manage the country’s New World, Pak’nSave and Four Square stores, to drive greater competition between the two co-operatives and lower prices.
However, it would require Commerce Commission sign-off following a six-month assessment after the election, should National be re-elected.
National’s policy intended to have New World and Four Square as one nationwide chain and Pak’nSave as another, therefore creating a third supermarket player to dilute the 82% market share held by Foodstuffs and Woolworths, which owns Countdown.
However, it remained unclear whether Act would support National’s plans if the coalition parties were re-elected, with leader David Seymour critical of the proposal.
“Look, people are strained because years of low productivity growth means low wages and things seem unaffordable, but attacking a business from your own Government doesn’t actually get the investment and innovation you need to raise wages and make life more affordable.”
Employing an Australian accent, Seymour hinted at why Woolworths had not been targeted.
“There’s a sad irony that they’re not touching … Woolworths, because if they did, they’d get a phone call from the Australian Prime Minister saying, ‘How about that economic relationship? Not something they can afford to do’.”
While arguing National had given itself an “out” by relying on the Commerce Commission’s approval, Seymour wouldn’t explicitly rule out signing up to the policy in a future coalition agreement.
“Our first job is to lock Labour out and form another government with National. Our second job is to make sure that this remains a place where it’s safe to invest and innovate and do business and make life better for New Zealanders.

Average speed safety cameras work by measuring how long it takes you to travel between 2 cameras along a road. Here’s how:
• We set 2 or more cameras on a stretch of road, some distance apart.
• When you pass the first camera it records the time.
• When you pass the second camera it records the time again.
• We calculate how long it took you to travel between the cameras (your average speed).
Expect to be fined if your average speed is over the speed limit – in other words, if you’ve travelled between the cameras too quickly.
Exceeding the speed limit is illegal. If you travel at or below the speed limit you won’t be fined.
Our aim is to reduce the number of people travelling over the speed limit and lessen the likelihood of a serious or fatal crash. We’re sharing a lot of information about the cameras, including their locations, so you know what to expect.
