NEW ZEALAND ISLAMIC TRUST FOUNDER JAILED FOR SEXUALLY VIOLATING A YOUNGER MAN, SECRETLY FILMING THE ABUSE AND BLACKMAILING HIM FOR INTIMATE PHOTOS

Uwais Abdirahman Ahmed, founder and chairman of the New Zealand Islamic Cultural Trust, was sentenced in the Rotorua District Court to seven years and seven months in prison after sexually violating a younger man, secretly recording the abuse and using the video to blackmail him.

Ahmed met the victim at Rotorua’s Polynesian Spa in December 2020 and obtained his phone number. When they met again the following month, Ahmed suggested they go somewhere private to talk.

Instead, Ahmed sexually assaulted him.

🔴 Ahmed secretly filmed part of the sexual violation without the victim’s knowledge.

🔴 Weeks later, Ahmed contacted the man through Snapchat and demanded that he send intimate photographs of himself.

🔴 When the man refused, Ahmed sent him a copy of the secretly recorded sexual-assault video.

🔴 Ahmed threatened to send the video to the victim’s friends unless the man supplied the intimate photographs he demanded.

🔴 The blackmail and threats continued for months. The victim said he eventually complied because he “saw no way out” before finding the courage to report Ahmed to police.

A jury found Ahmed guilty of eight charges: two counts of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, two counts of indecent assault, inducing an indecent act, making an intimate visual recording, blackmail and failing to carry out obligations relating to a police search.

Members of Ahmed’s family and the Muslim community travelled from Auckland to support him at sentencing. Ahmed asked for the hearing to be conducted in a closed courtroom without his supporters listening, but the judge refused.

During sentencing, the victim confronted Ahmed and called him a “small, weak, disgusting man” who preyed on younger males to fulfil his “sick, monstrous desires.”

The victim said Ahmed had claimed to be a powerful and influential man with many contacts and suggested it would be unwise for the victim or his family to resist him.

The offending left the victim suffering from depression and anxiety, damaged his relationships and caused him to self-harm. He described Ahmed as a threat to society.

Judge Paul Geoghegan said the victim had shown courage by reporting the offending. Ahmed continued to claim that he had been falsely accused and showed no remorse.

The judge adopted an eight-year starting point and granted Ahmed a 5% reduction because he had no previous convictions. The court found no evidence supporting claims that he was otherwise of good character. His final sentence was seven years and seven months’ imprisonment.

Ahmed challenged his convictions and sentence through the appeal courts. However, his final attempt failed when the Supreme Court dismissed his application for leave to appeal on 12 August 2026. His convictions and prison sentence remain in place.

Publicly available reports do not establish Ahmed’s citizenship or immigration status, so it is not known whether he could face deportation after serving his sentence.

Fred Kummerow told America in 1957 that the fat in margarine was turning up in the arteries of the dead. The government acted on it in 2015. He was 100.

He was a biochemist at the University of Illinois, and what he had done was simple and slightly grim. He got hold of tissue from people who had died of heart disease and looked at what their arteries were made of. They were full of trans fats, a kind of fat that barely exists in nature and came, in 1957, from one place: the hydrogenated vegetable shortening and margarine the country had just been told to eat in place of butter.

He published it in Science. He was 43.

What followed was a career spent being ignored by experts. The oil industry had friends on every committee. His funding grew thin. In 1968 he talked a panel of the American Heart Association into warning about trans fats, and the warning was pulped and reprinted without it after the shortening makers saw a draft.

Kummerow kept working. He kept his laboratory into his nineties. And he kept eating, quite deliberately and in front of journalists, the diet he had been told would kill him. Eggs cooked in butter. Whole milk. Red meat. He had looked inside the arteries himself and he had not found breakfast in there.

In 2009, aged 94, he filed a formal petition asking the Food and Drug Administration to ban artificial trans fats. The law gave the agency 180 days to answer. Four years later it had not, so in 2013, at 98, he sued the United States government.

Three months after that the FDA announced it agreed with him. The ban was confirmed in 2015. The gap between his paper and the decision was 58 years, which is longer than most of the people who ate the margarine got.

He died in 2017, at 102.

And he spent those last years on a second warning, which has been received exactly as the first one was. The problem, he said, was never the cholesterol in the egg. It is the vegetable oil in the fryer, heated and reheated until it oxidises, and then eaten.

On the record so far, that one is due to be acted upon in about 2070.
