Was in Rotorua yesterday and it seems to be perking up. Lots of new housing, lots of new commercial building, and an air of confidence among people.

NZ First pledges 100-day plan to abolish Waitangi Tribunal

New Zealand First has announced plans to abolish the Waitangi Tribunal within its first 100 days if re-elected.
The party announced on Saturday it would replace the tribunal with a temporary commission to complete all historical claims prior to 2008.
The policy targets what party leader Winston Peters described as a “Waitangi make-work industry” and a semi-judicial threat to parliamentary democracy.
Under the proposal, the Treaty of Waitangi Completion Commission would replace the tribunal to finalise all claims prior to 2008, after which its work would be finished.
In a speech detailing the policy, Peters traced the origin of the issue back to 1975, when the second Labour Government established the tribunal while simultaneously taking coastal land off Māori for “public utility purposes” and altering the definition of Māori for electoral roll purposes.

Coromandel earthquake swarm – update Saturday 26th September.
The earthquake sequence under the Coromandel Range halfway between Thames and Whitianga is continuing. The number of small shallow quakes over the past 40 hours, has now reached 16. The main shock so far was a M2.5 at 5:44pm Friday 25th September which was felt as a jolt in Tapu.
The quakes have been triggered near a known local fault in between the Waiwawa and Kauaeranga rivers. For historical context, the August- September 1970 swarm in the same vicinity consisted of 60 quakes, which included 3 quakes between M4.5 and M4.8.
