Phil Gifford dies aged 79 after more than 50 years in sports journalismIconic sports journalist, broadcaster and writer Phil Gifford has died.
He died in Auckland on Tuesday night, aged 79. He is survived by wife Jan and his children Emmalene, Jane, Scott and Adam.
Gifford had been a journalist for more than 50 years and was a regular contributor to the Herald since 2019, covering two World Cups, two Olympics and the appointments of three All Blacks coaches.
His career began in radio where he worked at multiple stations including former sports station Radio Sport and other NZME-owned stations ZM and Radio Hauraki.

Israel says ‘jihadist’ pilot tried to crash flight from Dubai, passengers fought back to prevent disaster
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says one of the pilots of a Tel Aviv-bound flydubai flight tried to crash the plane and kill its passengers, after the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
Passengers gave a similar account of the incident on board, describing a fight for control after the plane suddenly plummeted, losing around 17,000 feet of altitude in the span of a minute, according to the Flightradar24 website.
Flydubai said all the passengers – of whom 166 out of 174 were Israeli, according to media reports – were safe, adding that the reasons for the altercation were unknown.
AFPTV images later showed another flydubai plane carrying the passengers touch down at Tel Aviv airport, hours after their initial flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk.
“During the flight, as they approached the country, one of the pilots stabbed the other pilot, and apparently tried to crash the plane with everyone on board,” Netanyahu said in a video message.

I am writing to you directly because otherwise we cannot trust that New Zealanders will ever hear the full substance of what we are proposing.
Our policies get condensed into headlines and announcements become stories about how whingers react to them. Sensible common sense policies that most New Zealanders agree with are treated as controversies, or reframed into what somebody else says we really meant. Sometimes the detail barely gets a look in at all.
So rather than rely on someone else to interpret New Zealand First’s position for you, I want to explain it directly.
And you can make sure the message goes further than those who have kindly given us their email address.
The idea connecting much of what we are proposing at this election is clear. It is that New Zealand should control its own future.These are complex and challenging times. We cannot afford to give the reins to student politicians and those who have already shown their willingness to vandalise our future. New Zealand needs experience, and through experience, good judgement that protects New Zealand’s vital interests first and foremost.
New Zealand First takes the world as it is, not as some cloistered postmodern lecturer or dancing green TikToker wants it to be. With experience comes prudence, common sense, and the understanding that sometimes we have to make hard decisions. And with enough New Zealand First MPs comes the power to decide our own future, instead of having it decided for us.
The economy is not where it should be. Kiwis know that without being told. We said at the last election that the damage done by the previous Labour Government could not be undone in three years. We were right. There is growth happening, but not nearly as much as we need.
We inherited a disaster of massive over-borrowing, and spending not on production, not on wealth creation, not on employment, and not on exports, but purely on consumption. We are all paying the price for Labour’s decisions now.
The sad truth about New Zealand over the past fifty years is that we went from the top tier in the world to a non-competing economy. In 1984 came the neoliberal experiment of Labour’s Roger Douglas, followed by the austerity of National’s Ruth Richardson. The left and the right went on to sell our assets, privatise our country, and open our borders to mass immigration. Forty years down the track, we can see it has been an abject failure.
Only one party never subscribed to that ideology. New Zealand First was formed because we opposed it. We have always believed in economic nationalism. The radical notion that we own our country’s assets and we should use them to our benefit.
We believe in targeted government intervention and giving a hand up in times of need. We support capitalism with a human face and a spirit of solidarity.
New Zealand is a sovereign nation and we resist anyone who seeks to undermine that by increasing our dependence on external powers. It is time to tear up globalist agreements that exist to extract billions from New Zealanders for emissions that are a wisp of smoke compared to the industrial-scale deluge from the likes of China, India, and the United States.
We are too dependent on volatile markets and supply chains that we have seen severely tested in recent years. New Zealand First’s vision is one of economic independence. But that kind of future requires keeping the maniacal activists away from the levers of power. We cannot afford to have our future in the hands of ideological fools who would snitch on their own country to impress Greta Thunberg.
We need adults in the room with enough of a backbone to say “actually we are going to use our own resources” just like other countries do.
This term of government, Shane Jones has relentlessly resisted the pearl-clutching of other parties.
He has had to battle the activists on the other side of Parliament who would shut down industries and projects with the potential to provide Kiwi workers with high wages because virtue signalling is more important.
New Zealand First says we can take control of our own future. We can make the most of our resources, build sovereign wealth, and ensure that ours is a country that works for its people.
This brings me to the main reason I am writing to you directly. It turns out our national media outlets have decided to ignore New Zealand First’s immigration policies.
They are the first to jump on the slightest negativity, but when we lay out a comprehensive policy, they suddenly go dumb, deaf, and blind.
I do not intend to leave it to editors, commentators, or our political opponents to tell you what New Zealand First believes. I would rather tell you directly, set out the policy plainly, and let you judge it for yourself.
First and foremost, we must have the discipline and sense to control our borders and ensure that those we let into this country are here to fill gaps in our workforces and are willing to respect our values and way of life.
Immigration is where the principle of sovereignty is truly tested.
How many times has New Zealand First been attacked as “xenophobic” and “racist” for asserting that New Zealand has a culture worth protecting?
Look around the world. There are plenty of examples of what we do not want our country to become. But instead of appreciating what we have and being patriots for New Zealand, those in green and red seem to hate everything we stand for.
They are oikophobes, fetishising everyone else’s cultures, wearing their flags, shouting their chants, while loathing the free and just democracy they were lucky enough to inherit.
Around 30% of current New Zealand residents were not even born here. Thirty years ago it was 17%. If we carry on this trajectory, by our grandchildren’s generation that could well be more than half.
This is a system that is out of control and, worst of all, many of the political class have no desire to wrangle it back.
The fact is, in the past four years we have seen a net increase of 165,000 new migrants. Under Labour’s final year of government alone, they let in 131,000 net. When we were in government in 2017, we ensured immigration was cut back, but when we were out, and Labour was left to their own devices, the foot came off the brake.
National and ACT said absolutely nothing either. One is too scared of being called “racist” in the newspapers and the other only sees demands from some businesses for cheap labour to undercut our own workforce.
As it says in the good book: by their deeds you will know them.
We need immigration. Don’t let any biased columnist tell you that New Zealand First is anti-immigration because we are not. It has been an essential part of our history and we are all descendants of people who decided to venture here for opportunity.
But immigration must be smart and controlled. Allowing in immigrants we need, not people who need us. The Kiwi dream belongs to Kiwis who have worked hard for this country, invested time, sweat and pride, and share in our history. It is not for just anybody who arrives for five minutes and claims what we have built for their convenience.
For decades you have heard other politicians here and abroad parroting that “diversity is our greatest strength.” That is false. Unity is our strength. Diversity, without a common purpose, is weakness and division. We do not have to all be the same and have the same story, but we do need to be pulling in the same direction.
That is why we have announced the most serious immigration reform in a generation.
Whatever your view of these proposals ultimately is, you should at least know what New Zealand First is actually proposing before somebody else tells you what to think about it.
So here it is, plainly and without the filter.

Without a New Zealand First Immigration Minister, this vision for taking control of our future is just fantasy. National and ACT need New Zealand First to save them from their own instincts.
Because we actually do have the right to determine the future size and character of our country. New Zealand citizenship is a privilege, not a right.
So there you have it. The policy that taxpayer-owned TVNZ has refused to report. Not one story. Not one article.
We are the only socially conservative party, and they do not like it. The only nationalist party, and they do not like it. The only patriotic party, a word now so often criticised. We stand proud to be patriots of New Zealand. Most importantly, we are the only party that can counter-balance the present spectrum of extremists in Parliament.
We have won many battles. The war is not yet over.
Believe me when I tell you that we in New Zealand First do not think we are just running in another election. We understand that we are running to save our country economically and socially from extremists.
To do that, we need many more New Zealand First MPs. Many, many more.
So do not give us a microlight and then ask us to fly to the moon. If you give us the tools, we will finish the job.
That means organisation, halls, printing, travel, and the means to put our case when the official channels will not.
We rely on New Zealanders like you who still believe this country is worth defending.
I am asking you to chip in to the fight of our lives.Give what you can. Fifty dollars helps. A hundred helps more. If you can give two hundred and fifty, or five hundred, or a thousand, it keeps a serious campaign in the field through to polling day.
True democracy is a rare flower in the history of humanity. We inherited a free country that our forebears fought and died for. It is our job to preserve it. We must never stop believing in New Zealand.
Protect. Save. Restore. Put New Zealand and New Zealanders first.

I suspect a few die hards will vote 2 Ticks blue. However, I have always assumed that intelligence in New Zealand follows a normal bell curve. So 50% are below normal intelligence and 50% are above. Now about 30% of voters are die hard Labour supporters and about 15% are die Hard Greens or Racists. That’s about 45%. Theoretically, that means that the remaining 55% lean to the more intelligent side of the curve with about 5% being Nat Supporters that are less intelligent. ( Like Luxon). So hopefully the 50% that are above normal intelligence will see the light and split their votes. Of course this could just be crap and they will fuck it up as usual, no matter how intelligent they are….

TREASON? RATTING OUT NEW ZEALAND TO THE EU
There are some things you expect politicians to argue about. Taxes. Spending. Housing. Crime. Climate policy. But when a New Zealand politician takes a political fight overseas and asks a foreign trading bloc to investigate the New Zealand Government, we have entered very different territory.
In June 2026, Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick wrote directly to the European Union’s Trade Commissioner, raising concerns that changes to New Zealand’s climate policy could breach commitments under our international trade agreements and asking the European Commission to investigate.
That matters, because Swarbrick wasn’t simply criticising the Government from Wellington. She was the one who took this dispute directly to the EU and asked them to examine whether New Zealand was complying with its international commitments. The Government rejected that interpretation. Trade Minister Todd McClay said New Zealand was meeting its obligations and criticised the idea of overseas governments, organisations or lobby groups telling New Zealand how it should meet those obligations.
The European Commission did not proceed with Swarbrick’s original complaint.But now look at what has happened.
On 29 September 2026, a European environmental organisation called Both ENDS ( It’s a Dutch environmental NGO) lodged a formal complaint with the European Commission’s Single Entry Point, alleging that New Zealand’s climate and environmental policy changes breach commitments contained in the EU-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement. This is now an actual formal EU complaints process, rather than simply a New Zealand politician writing to the EU about the issue.
And Swarbrick has welcomed it, calling the complaint a “wake up call” for the Government.
So let’s be absolutely clear about the sequence. Swarbrick raised the issue with the EU first. She took the dispute directly to the European Commission and asked them to investigate whether the New Zealand Government was breaching the trade agreement. That initial complaint did not proceed. Now, months later, the same underlying dispute has been taken up through a formal EU complaints mechanism by a European organisation, and Swarbrick is publicly welcoming that process. She did not personally lodge this new complaint, but pretending her earlier intervention is irrelevant to what is happening now would be ridiculous. She was the New Zealand politician who first took this particular fight directly to the EU.
WHY DOES THAT MATTER?
Because this isn’t some meaningless international climate club. The EU-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement is a major trade agreement covering billions of dollars of trade between New Zealand and the European Union. Two-way trade was worth about NZ$21.5 billion in 2025.
And here’s the part people need to understand. The EU’s own description of the agreement says the EU and New Zealand commit to effectively implementing the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. It also provides for temporary suspension of trade preferences as a last resort in serious violations of certain environmental and climate commitments, including the Paris Agreement.
So when a New Zealand politician takes this dispute directly to a foreign trading partner and asks it to investigate whether our own Government is complying with those commitments, this isn’t just an argument about climate policy. There is a trade agreement sitting underneath it.
THAT’S WHY THIS IS SERIOUS
Imagine the reverse. Imagine a National MP contacted a foreign government and said: “I don’t like what my Labour Government is doing. Can you investigate them and see whether they’re breaking our international agreements?” Would the Greens be applauding? Would they call it responsible politics? Or would they call it undermining New Zealand? Because apparently the answer depends on which side of Parliament is doing it.
THIS ISN’T ABOUT WHETHER CLIMATE CHANGE EXISTS
That is the distraction. You can believe climate change is real. You can support reducing emissions. You can support cleaner technology. You can even support the Paris Agreement. And still ask whether a New Zealand politician should be asking a foreign trading bloc to investigate the elected New Zealand Government. Those are two completely different questions.
The Government has said it remains committed to meeting New Zealand’s international climate obligations, while arguing it has the right to decide how those obligations are met. McClay has rejected the suggestion that the Government is breaching its trade commitments. Swarbrick disagrees. Fine. That’s democracy. But taking the fight offshore is another matter.
AND IT’S NOT LIKE THERE ISN’T A FINANCIAL STAKE
The complaint alleges that a combination of Government decisions, including changes to methane targets, removing agriculture from carbon pricing, reversing the offshore oil and gas exploration ban and other climate-policy changes, has created a significant emissions shortfall. The complaint also points to the potential cost of offshore mitigation.
Treasury’s 2026 analysis has put a very real price on the problem. Its modelling indicates that meeting New Zealand’s first Paris target could require around $4.4-$5.0 billion in offshore mitigation, depending on the scenario.
These aren’t numbers made up by National. They’re Treasury numbers. So we are talking about international climate commitments potentially involving billions of dollars, alongside a trade agreement containing enforceable environmental and climate commitments. This isn’t theoretical anymore.
SO WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON?
This isn’t about whether Chlöe Swarbrick is allowed to disagree with Christopher Luxon. Of course she is. She is an elected MP. She can criticise the Government all she likes.
But there is a massive difference between holding your Government to account in New Zealand and taking the dispute directly to a foreign trading partner and asking it to investigate whether your own Government is complying with an international agreement. That’s the bit that deserves scrutiny.
Because when you’re dealing with international trade, jobs, exporters, farmers and billions of dollars in economic activity, you don’t get to pretend there are no consequences.
TREASON?
Let’s be clear. We’re not talking about the legal offence of treason. We’re talking about something much simpler. Loyalty to your own country.
When you believe your Government is wrong, fight it here. Use Parliament. Use the courts. Use the media. Use elections. Convince New Zealanders. But asking a foreign trading bloc to investigate your own Government? That’s not something I think should ever be treated as normal political behaviour.
Especially when the foreign bloc in question has an agreement with New Zealand that explicitly contains climate and environmental commitments and mechanisms for dealing with serious breaches.
Maybe the question isn’t whether Chlöe Swarbrick technically broke any law. Maybe the question is whether she crossed a line that politicians shouldn’t cross. Because there is a difference between opposing your Government and taking that political fight directly to a foreign power.
And now that the same underlying issue has become the subject of a formal EU complaint, New Zealanders are entitled to ask whether taking our domestic political battles offshore was really as harmless as some people made it sound.
Whose interests are being put first? New Zealand’s? Or the international climate agenda?

I favour a rule that says you must either own a share of property in the place you’re voting, or have resided in the area for say, 3.5 of the past four years.
The latter allows genuine long-term residents who rent, to vote, but not arseholes like students, who shit in the nest with their Green and Labour votes, then leave while those who remain deal with the carnage.

Anyone tried getting an ETA to travel to he UK? What a fucking mission. Unfortunately I have to go and see my Father In Law who lives there. These bastards want particular types of photos that keep getting rejected. Told my wife never again. Fuck the UK.

Problem is I thought I was on the official UK Website so basically I got scammed for the $244 as the actual cost is 20E. However, I checked on the official website and the ETA is valid. Still not applying ever again. (unless the official language has been changed to Russian)
