Good morning,
Shake rattle & roll, not not the usual shake to empty for early morning roll.

When Sat Oct 3 2026 2:57 AM
Where 25 km east [inland] of New Plymouth
Shaking Strong
Magnitude 5.3
Depth10 km
Quality preliminary
https://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/weak

Sooty, Did they give you an EMA “Emergency Mobile Alert” squawk to tell you that you survived an earth quake?

Some I hear even got the ‘EMA’ before the shaking starting, like I hear of some in Ratehi.
Stuff that as that would seem to be even more alarming!

Others that were much closer lost internet for about 20 minutes.

The quake being a sharp jolt and then some rolling shake, that was not too long, so there should have been no tsuami warning piled on top, so Sooty will not have needed to ready his canoe for launching.

For Hunty in Nelson, now you hear why the “earth moved”

S1, felt this Shake quite strongly in Taumarunui. The one we had in July which was centered 5 Kms from here at 9 km deep and measured 5.9, was obviously felt a lot stronger, but this mornings one out of New Plymouth was a reasonably good shake, probably the second biggest I have felt for a long time.

I have been looking at purchasing a couple of additional properties here and I am very surprised to see the amount of damage that the July Earthquake has caused to properties around Taumarunui, so hope that there is not a lot of damage caused around New Plymouth from this mornings Shake..

Edit the government EMA system did not go off.

There is a smart phone sensor alert that people can sign up to, where geo net then feeds into the smartphone android system; so not a governmental civil defence alert.

A memory I will never forget as a -say 11 y.o- went to stay with my new sister in law’s parents, on a farm.who had a son just a couple of years younger than me. Both the parents were on the overweight side. At meal time onto the table came a pound of butter and onto the spuds and sausages etc it was applied. I remember watching wide eyed as father and son put very amounts on, this was to me more that a luxury as certainly would never have happened at my home. Everything eaten but still some butter did remain, the father said no point leaving that and father and son both shared the rest just eating it straight off the knive.
Not sure how old the father was when we died, quite overweight by then but would think certainly the wrong side of 80 and the son a lot earlier than that but by his own hand.

Petrol prices – travelled back from Christchurch on Thursday which is NPD discount day. At Rolleston (Christchurch) for 91 it was $3.26. At Rakaia (middle of Ashburton and Christchurch, a small country town) it was $3.17. At Timaru it was $3.11.

HP, $3.11 for 91 in Timaru – Luxury.

Try Taumarunui mate, the 3 Servos here really bend you over and all charge exactly the same price to the percentage of a cent and have done forever (the Commerce Commission don’t want to know) but currently 91 sits at $3.72 litre. Yep $3.72 a miserable litre.

I had to go to Tokoroa yesterday and filled up at Gull there at $3.31 and even at Whakamaru in Bumfuck nowhere at G.A.S. 91 stood at $3.42 litre.

Was Cullen, (apart from being nasty individul), a reasonable finance Minister?
Many would say so.

So what about Edmonds and her philosophy?

Edmonds also acknowledged the resilience of business owners in the audience and said over the past decade they had to battle many things out of their control.
“I’ve spent my career working with businesses, the tax system and governments of both colours. I know what responsible economic management looks like and I know the pressures that businesses face because my own family having run a small business has felt them too. That experience is why I am ambitious about what New Zealand can achieve,” Edmonds said.

“Being able to invest in the economy means for Labour we want to start with small businesses. We want to invest in the skills and infrastructure, support job creation and get more capital flowing into productive New Zealand businesses. I’m bringing the experience to the job, Labour has the ambition to get this economy moving again.”

As to whether her predecessor Grant Robertson was to blame for the state of the economy, Edmonds said it was easy to blame others but the decisions were in the government-of-the-day’s hands.
“If you compare the pre-election fiscal update of 2023 to the pre-election fiscal update that was released earlier this week, on every economic indicator things are worse.
“Right now households have less money to spend. Prices are rising twice as fast as pay, at 4.1% compared to 2%, and businesses are closing at the fastest rate in 15 years.”

As for the plausibility of NZ First’s policy to cut the company tax rate for small and medium businesses from 28% to 20%, Willis agreed on the sentiment but said the Government needed to be in surplus before making changes.
Edmonds challenged Willis on the Government’s decision to deliver personal tax cuts, pointing to the previous Government’s pre-election fiscal update, which said the Government would be in a $2 billion surplus.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/small-business/barbara-edmonds-and-nicola-willis-clash-on-small-business-policies-in-debate/premium/6H7E35A5EBFBJENEXOKYGATQMI/

Now I’m not saying vote Labour, but frankly, I never thought Willis was anything more than Ruth All-Mouth and trousers in ability and that baggage destroyed thousands of businesses for little gain, and Willis has done the same.

Perhaps Act and Labour might just be the right coalition?
I think Edmonds has the right idea. Cutting taxes is a winner for everyone to grow the pie.
Lower tax rates and index them
Exempt the first 15k of income
Up the GST registration amount to 100K
Up the GST to 20 %
Remove lots of deductions such as for expensive cars and utes.Depreciate nothing in the car line over 40k
Stop subsidising every man and his dog.
Stop sending money overseas to every whinging dicpot..
Stop propping up Ukraine and the EU.
Tariff those that tariff us and support our own industries.
Allow companies to completely depreciate fixed plant over 3 or 5 years We need good, up-to-date plant.

That’s just a few.
Oh and stop subsidising ex farmers in their retirement village. 😆

you really have lost the plot you derranged old fool, to think labour would ever work with act is one of the dumbest things youve suggested, to think labour in control of finances would be more responsible/better is even more fucking retarded.
have you not worked out yet that most political parties and politicians have a huge contrast between what they say and what they actually do?

while a few of those tax/gst suggestions are good theyll never happen under labour and if they did then the borrowing or extra taxation elsewhere while negate any benefit plus sum for all except the bludging feral welfare scum.

90% of your list of tax changes most certainly wouldnt fit with a labour party either…. please, either stop taking illegal drugs or go get some prescription drugs. this is one of the dumbest posts youll make today, im sure youll try to outdo it but no, its dumb as fuck. maybe dont rort the tax system and you wont have so much pent up guilt on claiming all those deductions and depreciations 🙂

The increased GST way is to become fucked up,, as the consequences will lead to even more pressure; demand for exemptions, like on food, a raw apple , but if one buys an apple strudel it will then be full GST.

The real issue is just, what & why & where is the government spending the money, and to what effect.
What is the real job of government? an insurance company, like for health?
The difficulty in how to pay for access for roads,, public transport. trains, cycle-ways? etc., to what standards?

Governments do not seem to know the value of money, or the consequences of how they scam, skim, levy, fees, permits etc., & find ways of how they can control people through these costly devices.

The way of how governments value their services to the public? like in having a police force, judiciary, correction prisons ?

The money, well it is just other people’s money that is demanded with menaces, and odious compelling costly regulations & measures for the “good of the community”.
That has become redistribution, deemed an essential, as in important glossy “caring-kindness” of the collective community..

A government is always the biggest beneficiary of inflation, as it is the largest borrower.

The government, the people are looking how to do over the “non spenders” with wealth, asset taxes
The non spenders would be considered a poor contributor to society as the belief is that money is made to be spent.

The Modern Money Theory, the Magic Money Tree, ideology is coming into play.

There’s no difficulty in paying for anything so long as we don’t pay for things people should pay for themselves. It’s a bloody simple equation that always escapes simpletons and politicians.

People will pay for what they value. Provided they are not lured into the trap of being a beneficiary of everything, which is our current mentality.

Stop PAYE, the hidden unknown tax.
Then demand the money directly from each wage earner, will sharpen the pencil, on just what is the government needing this $ for.

All this tax free threshold becomes complicated whether single, or married, partnered to what ever & how many children, of what age.

It is just elitist academic talk by smart arse economists, that curries voting favour angles for politicians.

Now if you put it that the ones not paying tax, do not get to vote, then that will be a different story. 😁

Exactly nasska, and how can the left resist that concept when it is all tied back into one of their main controlling policies.

That is only the government should fund political parties, just for starters.

It may be an over reach, but for the ones that pay a net tax, be given a proportionate extra vote showing the governments & communities appreciation of that taxation.?

One can see the economic energy in this as increased voluntary tax donations to the government can increase ones vote proportionately.

Not a good idea. GST as a percentage keeps funding government waste from now to infinity. The tax threshold gets eroded by inflation. This is having a serious effect on household budgets right now as wage rises to counter inflation tip more people onto tax rates once reserved for the seriously rich.

Viking

Well it wouldn’t if there were proper thresholds and a tax-free amount, along with removing lots of the subsidies and the handouts to companies, etc as I outlined above. index it to inflation
consumption should be taxed more, income taxed less.

cant really do away with income tax because it applies to so much more then just wages and gst would have to go far higher than 20% to compensate.

Why it costs so much to build? Not what you think.

New Zealand’s construction industry may face a reckoning after police uncovered a money-laundering system moving hundreds of millions of dollars in organised crime profits through building businesses. Gangs are exploiting cash-paid labour to launder drug money while unscrupulous subcontractors dodge tax and undercut legitimate operators. Police say the true scale is likely greater, warning construction leaders their systems are simply not robust enough.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are being laundered through the construction industry each year by organised crime groups, according to a new police report to the Government.
A recent investigation into the commercial drug dealing of the Comancheros led to more convictions for the gang’s hierarchy – and a disgraced accountant – but also uncovered a new methodology of disguising the profits of their drug dealing.
Known as cash wages money-laundering, organised crime groups hand their dirty cash to a subcontractor who provides casual labourers to work on construction projects.
The subcontractor uses the gang’s cash to pay the labourers, often exploited migrants, under the table.

The subcontractor then invoices the construction project for the labour services provided, with the subsequent payment made into their bank accounts.
Those funds are then transferred into shell companies – masquerading as construction businesses – which are ultimately controlled by the gang that provided the cash.
The practice has been described in court documents as a “marriage of convenience” between organised crime and unscrupulous figures in the construction industry.

While it enables gangs to convert illicit cash into seemingly legitimate income to fund their lifestyle, cash wages money-laundering also benefits the subcontractors providing labour.
By paying workers in cash, the subcontractor pays lower wages but also avoids paying tax and other employer obligations such as ACC levies.
This allows them to undercut rival businesses by significant margins when tendering for work.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/police-warn-government-that-hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars-of-drug-profits-laundered-via-construction-jobs/premium/QLP2ZK5DHNGM7CM5V4I7Y5QNNU/

Shipping costs are a major factor in pump price increases.
While commentators focus on crude oil prices, the rapid rise in freight costs gets little attention.

The cost to move crude oil is now four times higher than the rolling five-year historical average. This increases the costs the refining companies have to pay. Before the Iran conflict, crude oil was trading around US$75 a barrel, and ocean freight was about US$2 per barrel. During the crisis, crude went to around US$105 a barrel and freight to around US$25 per barrel.

In other words, the cost at the refining company gate went from $77 to $130.

Now it has a population of about 139 million.

No wonder they can probably comfortably send out about a million people a year to the rest of the world, & now when they clap, we jump with UN Global Migration Pact, with Human Rights to gain free accomodation, food etc…

And so the shit flows.

But were they Ethiopians or Somalis, and which Somalis?
Its easy to label a group of people.

A quick look would tell you that they are more likely from the western side of Africa, as Ethiopia is a long way across to the east, so unlikely to be the people in Spain, and nothing that I read suggested they were Ethiopian.

Ethiopia is actually developing itself, much like Buso Fatso is. They have been booting the colonialists out, and late last year opened a big new dam to supply electricity across several of their neighbours..
It’s a very fertile country and a bloody big one. Grow avos and bananas and lots of other crops; cows milk ok. Once they get more educated, the place will be like Rhodesia was: a giant garden. It also has lots of minerals, including gold and coal and is a lot closer to Europe than us.
My son spent a big part of last year there, so that is how I got interested in knowing about Ethiopia.

“Father, where do we go when we die?”

“If we are worthy, we go to Jannah” her father says. “Which is a most beautiful paradise of endless gardens with rivers of milk and honey and wine. There is no pain or suffering. It is a place of perfect happiness, where the worthy will all dwell eternally in the company of Allah and His angels.”

“And how do I become worthy?” the girl asks.

“You must be good and modest and chaste,” her father tells her. “And never bring dishonour to your family or your religion.”

“And if I wasn’t good and modest and chaste?” asks the Muslim girl. “What if I did bring dishonour on my family and religion? Then where would I go when I die?”

“In that case,” says her father. “You would go under the patio with your sister.”

FOX “DELIBERATELY BURIED” INFORMATION AND SETTLED DOMINION CASE “SO AS NOT TO HELP TRUMP”

Patrick Byrne is making explosive allegations about Fox News’ decision to settle Dominion’s defamation lawsuit for $787.5 million, claiming people working with him briefed Mike Pompeo and Paul Ryan on information they had gathered about voting systems before the settlement.
Byrne claims Fox ultimately chose not to fight the case because doing so could have helped President Trump.
“They deliberately buried this and settled that case so as not to help Trump.”
Byrne says he believes internal communications could eventually reveal more about what happened behind the scenes:
“When those emails get out, that should destroy Fox.”
