My maternal grandmother hailed from Dundee & emigrated to NZ after WW1. She was generally a great cook & a gifted baker but her achilles heel were scones. Rather than light fluffy, cheesy temptations these things were hard, stodgy lumps that dried your mouth out. I suspect that the ingredients were equal parts of flour, baking soda & epoxy. They were nearly impossible to swallow as your stomach, knowing of what was to come, restricted your throat muscles in defence!
This was still in the era when childbeating was seen as therapeutic for parents & sparing the rod spoiled the child so eat them we did.
Clever collection today Ed
Ed’s meme on ‘sconehenge’ brought back memories.
