You can save money at the pump by buying a lower octane, but generally you pay for it in your wallet as a tank does not go as far. Very few cars are designed to run well on 91.

Higher octane allows higher compression before ignition and higher compression means a higher power output per stroke, and a cleaner and more complete burn. Modern cars will adjust ignition to cater for different fuels. Cheaper or older cars will not. In these cars using 91 is false economy. You pay less per litre but use more litres,

Cheap fuels are also cheap for a reason, they have less additives and octane boosters. Fuels with a high % of ethanol are not good for some engines. And all additives are not equal.

It is well recognised in the Subaru community that BP 98 is the best, safest, and most efficient fuel.
