Today is showdown time for Simon. I have never been a supporter of him, but to select a nobody to replace another nobody is just stupid.

With the rise in the two recent polls of liarbor, I question the veracity of them.

National support has dropped to 29% . Labour has gone up 18%. Act has gone up 1. No one can tell me that the collapse of National voter support has all gone to labour. They have been polling in and around 40% for the past two years. I would have expected most of these National voters to go to Act. But not so.

The good thing is the demise of Greens and WinstoneFirst.

  1. Evidently there was a 16% not stated /unsure. That is quite high by any means. Unless a whole bunch of Nats are bullshitting the pollsters. Anyway I agree that now is not the time for leadership spills. It makes us look like a bunch of disorganised muppetts.

  2. So Mr Nobody is trying to replace the leader!
Wouldn’t you want someone who the public has seen before.
Has he ever said anything in parliament other than his introductory speech.
Was he elected into his Invercargil seat or got a list seat?

  3. Correction –National has been polling at 40-45 % for 11 years ( with couple above 45 and I think there was 1 below 40) but otherwise I am in total agreement. When you compare this CB poll with the last it says 37% of National supporters have moved to Labour.
The cynical side of me says $50Mill buys a lot of BS.

  4. Boring old Bolger pushing his old office boy to achieve great things. Bolger, Boag and others who should have shuffled off into the sunset need to find something outside of politics to meddle in. Maybe their catholic church would appreciate their ministrations.

  5. Remember Bolgers 1990 election year ditty ” a decent society “. Uggh!

One interview I remember, think it was Q&A sometime back and Bolger was blowing on how ” he’d just returned from lecturing some scholars in the USA” about some blah fucking blah. Rates himself highly does our Spud Bolger.

  6. So it’s Muller, I think I know what National are up to

Now that I’ve had time to think about it, it’s clear. They are after a record. They want to have a result so poor that people can no longer point out that Bill English’s defeat in 2003 was the lowest National have ever polled.

They’ve just got a bit confused with Cindy boasting about how low our Covid count is – they think if they can claim that in 2020 the was the lowest it’s ever been – then they’ll get back in power.

Well let’s see if Muller is worth his salt – he has a reputation as a bit of a corporate bruiser – if nothing else he needs to get Jacinda bloody, tarnish her reputation and rattle her cage. She is fragile, she is brittle, she surrounds herself with harridans – if Todd can trigger that lot, maybe we can see mask slip a little and see the real Cindy, the one that snaps when put under pressure at Question TIme, the one that hides from difficult media encounters, the one who lies when she’s put on the spot a tiny bit.

So what if the bought and paid for MSM harpies screeech “Sekshim” at him. So what if Labour voters start to froth at the mouth – they’re NEVER going to vote National.

But I doubt it. Muller is another believer in Chicken Little AGW believer. He’s going to do exactly the same as Soimon – nothing and be an absolute pussy.

    • He can’t get in there and rattle her cage is 99% of the media are female and they would get pissed and start screaming at high pitch like the harridans they are!
Just imagine if she threw a wobbly and had to go in the repair shop for a period!

    • Sadly, with two ‘lefties’ now in charge, the Nats are now no different from the CoL, with the differences being now so minor as to render them indistinguishable.

Sic transit gloria, it was nice knowing you, a shame that you eventually became what you were founded to oppose.

The problem is now, who to vote for

  7. It will be party suicide if they dont drive some strong new RIGHT WING policies.

About time for an election manifesto that gives our NZ rights back.
And some guarantees that these policies will be addressed as their first priority.

  8. You are correct to question the veracity of those polls.
It is totally beyond belief than almost half of National voters have abandoned the party and turned to Labour.
These polls were a total fraud.
I feel sorry for Bridges….Now watch the paid-off Media attack Todd Muller (They will be digging for skeletons as we write..)

    • Thoughts:

      * National has moved more centrist and even left of center. It makes it less of a jump for a National voter to vote for Labour as they’re so closely aligned. (Remember myself, Nasska and others saying they’re different colours of the same policies?)
      * National has not been pushing a message publicly. They’ve avoided playing on Simon’s ancestry, they’ve avoided hammering Labour at every opportunity. They’ve basically not presented a credible opposition as ACT has done.
      * Swing voters still exist; they can vote for either Labour or National because what we consider important, such as integrity, etc. they don’t see. The media hides it from them.
      * Many imported Kiwis voted National while Key was PM (Strong leadership). They now vote Labour for the same reason; they look only to the leader, not the rest of the group.

I can see that so many National voters swung to Labour on the back of Covid-19, a hostile media and the lack of differentiation from National.

  9. I do not know much about Muller to be able to make much comment.

What worries me the most is his background supporters/organisers were Boag , Bolger and McCulley apparently. That worries me more than anything.
Edit —just read elsewhere Muller used to be a staffer for Bolger !!! That explains a bit.

Perhaps the biggest winner from this will be David Seymour and ACT.

  10. We will see what happens.
At the moment National is labour lite and it needs to change!
Has to some point of difference!
Needs to be a difference between MPs as well.
We don’t need more Twits, chippies, ducks or lawnmower salesmen.

  11. Now that Muller has won, expect the media to bring back one of their favourite mantras “Pale, Male and Stale”. I bet they’ve been itching to use that motto for years now (Key was Jewish and Bridges was Maori).

  12. Unlike Bridges, Muller said he had not ruled out working with Winston Peters and NZ First.

ypou heard this from me way back.

Bolger, Boag, Peters and maybe even the President of the party. Simon at least knows where the bodies are.

  13. Looking back I think Bridges main recent mistake was saying they would suspend electioneering while the virus crisis was on. I think he said it was wartime and we had to pull together. He was sucked into the alarmism from day one. That was stupid. His response was one you would expect from a “nice guy” and to be fair to him even Key said “now is not the time to play politics”.

I wrote to him at the start saying he should hammer Ardern over the claim of 10,000 deaths etc etc. He did nothing and now I understand why –he was scared just like the Govt and the MSM wanted everyone to be. A good leader would have stood back from the issue, tried hard to look at things objectively and taken independent advice if he could (ie. not advice from bureaucrats).

    12

    • More to the point perhaps; he should know Jacinda Ardern well enough to have known that she’d be electioneering every, step of the way even to the detriment of New Zealand. You don’t wrestle with a pig like that and stay clean.

  14. Looking at today one gets the impression that Simon was almost relieved that this has happened.
When you think about it he was promoted to the position at short notice and without much training.
Given that he has done a credible jog when we look at the polling for the last year or more.
Not what we would have liked but what seemed to be acceptable to around 40% of the voters.
Muller should make him Attorney General as that is where he is good value.
Other than collins I am not aware of any others that can do that.
