The End Of YSB ??

Received the following from the tech experts:

“We have been investigating the website signing in issues over the past week and discovered that multiple plugins are outdated and malfunctioning. As a result, some scripts are not loading properly. Given the evolving nature of these issues, attempts to resolve them have not been successful so far, and further efforts might cause additional functions to break. The best solution I can suggest at this point is to preserve the website data to avoid any loss and rebuild the website with a fresh theme and updated plugins. This will not only address the current issues but also enhance the website’s longevity and functionality.  The redo cost would be $3500. We will migrate all the data over including posts and customers.

Please let me know if you are open to this approach. Thank you!”

Apart from the cost of getting these changes done, I am disappointed in the actions of some former posters. A fair number threatened to leave if I didn’t do something to moderate comments by Kea and others. After much consideration, I thought by removing kea from commenting things might improve. To my surprise, those who were the most vociferous, have not bothered to stay. Some who used to be regular users have now reduced their comments to a point where I am about to say fuck it. Why spend all my time and money on something that is only an echo chamber for us old farts.

Even the donations have dried up. I am not in it to make money, but I am not going to keep pouring money into something that is not wanted. We used to get 3 – 400 posts daily on “Have your say”. Now it’s lucky to get over a hundred and that’s a good day.

It has been a good run since 2019, but eventually, all good things come to an end. Let me know your thoughts.

those commenters left almost immediately too, within a week or so of banning kea. moderation is a forum killer esp if its a free speech forum.
you were between a rock and a hard place on that one Ed but secretly those folk loved the drama and following the kea rants and subsequent replies, me thinks they just got on their high horse and faux outrage in a wokish way… they werent careful with what they wished for.

how long will she last if no action Ed, or is it a ticking time bomb and shit the bed at any stage?
im sure you want to rebuild the site just so you can get the ramblings of a stupid boy//////

another noticeable drop in comments/users was cindys resignation. this was one place ppl could come and vent without being piled on or banned, covid fading away aswell so less time and united causes to drive folk to vent their frustrations too.

maybe if you want the comments to soar again we should advocate to bring cindy back and maybe ask china to drop another vial.of virus or something? a putin nuclear war might do the trick too?

oh well whatever happens Ed keep my email addy and if youre ever in the south again get in touch and over a beer on a beach you can make me envious with that fishing drone 🙂

Hi Ed , I don’t understand any of the tech stuff it takes to run a open forum blog , but I do truly appreciate what you have done with this one.The kea thing was unfortunate but you did warn that user name that it needed to turn down the extreme side of its rants , I don’t always comment but do really enjoy reading the article type posts that you put up. When you live on a hill up a long gully with a farm and a youngish family this blog is a great bit of morning reading and sharing of ideas, and it shows that we are all in the same boat when it comes to idiots taking our money and trying to change our lives to fit an agenda.

Noticed how it has become very quiet however I doubt that its the fault of anything YSB has done.
There are a lot of issues taking peoples attention and the worst of those evils of course was Jacinda and her tribe of fruities.
That really rarked up the populace.

People see Seymour and his friends getting stuff done even if his compatriots in the roundhouse continue in the same old, same old. That’s comfortable to people who don’t need or want to change. But like possums in the headlights, they will sit and stare while the world continues around them eventually causing them an issue.
Our natural population is declining and our upcoming population is getting sick as well. Health Care compared to Australia is woeful and Reti will never fix It as long as his arse points to the ground. Good man but not kick in the arse change merchant like Tony Ryall. the only Minister to ever make the health service work. Reti is stymied by hois bosses determination not to rock the flimsy boat.

There are more houses for sale then there has ever been yet 3-4 years ago we apparently were thousands of houses short. All appalling lies much like the statistics rolled out over the covid jabs etc.
3 years ago we were short of 10000 truck drivers. Not anymore , the Indian portion of our population is approaching a higher proportion than Maori, (which must piss them off if they have noticed.). and they work hard, not one job but two or three.

Business wise its tough out there in most sectors and what Luxflakes and Willis have done, as did Bolger and Key before, they have rowed in on the fragile boat making all sorts of noises, especially around the public service and that has created fear for people. People don’t know what’s coming next in their jobs, their health care and what the state will steal from their incomes, wether its directly or indirectly.
Tell me anyone who thinks their costs have reduced, that some Nazi component of govt. won’t be along to take money from their pocket or some other bit won’t be around to try in some way to control their lives.
then there is the local bodies that have grown to be lawmakers in their own right.

So we have mulitple tiers of Govt.
Parliament who really are being controlled by the Maori elite (remember there are more Maori in parliament than any other group,), the Maori elite and their friends on the Bench, unelected bullies making Law that is not their remit but Govt. wont slap them down, Locall bodies who repeat that process in their truly tiny patches of ground for the benefit (ha) of the locals and then to to be forgtooen all those quango’s and NGO’s and private armies like the SPCA, Fish and Game, sports bodies and so on by the hundreds all out to suck ya money or control what you do.

Not arguing that some we need but pointing out for 5.5 million people we have more controllers than the old Soviet Union.
And we wonder why we have a disgruntled population, that doesn’t save, that gets ripped off, where banks can decide they don’t like a customer on the basis of some very woke ideology that has nothing what so ever to do with the business transactions and peoples right to spend their own money on what they decide is appropriate for them, where the commercial imperative has been submerged under that woke pretence of doing good.

And talking the old Soviet Union, leads us to the appalling decisions that NZ has engaged in over the Ukraine by being bullied by the CIA. Peter was a mate of Condie Rice, which tells you about his relationships with the USA and therefore the UN. The 2 worst evils in the world today. while we have this great Indian diaspora we will struggle forever to get a Trade Deal. They just don’t do that but we could have had some with Russia and some of those countries if we had mionded our own business.

All in all we would say we have the got the govt.’s we don’t deserve.
Which is why people are leaving, transiting to Aussie which is much the same but just bigger and they all live further apart unless you are in the cities, which incidentally are going the same way all big cities go. Becoming undesirable places to live.

I enjoy YSB but totally understand where you are coming from.
But I would sayof your outfit that set you set you up.
There are better here, in Tauranga.

Hi everyone. I migrated here because I was sick of Kiwiblog’s moderation. My blog life started with Whaleoil, but got sick of their small mindedness as well. Extreme posters don’t bother me, I have always believed in absolute freedom of speech. The reason I read this blog everyday is it is my one source of New Zealand news, I don’t bother with the local MSM. I enjoy the teasing and smart alec comments, the philosophical exchanges and the opportunity to rant. I would be very sad to see the demise of this forum, but I understand your position. If it is mainly the financial aspect, then I suggest you put it out to the readers that unless a financial contribution is made, the site closes. Those that really would want this to stay alive could then indicate a willingness to chip in. However, if you do close this, I would just like to say that although I have never met any of you, I feel I know you and would gladly sit down and drink a beer or to or three and chew the fat.

Opening YSB to Ed’s contributions is like a daily present, depending on what you post, either a great laugh or a shot between the eyes of remarkable facts. Thanks Ed for the camaraderie and support from a knowledgeable bunch of good kiwis through dark covid times and the ongoing political idiocracy frustrations. At least we together knew we weren’t the only one swimming against the tide which gave me courage to defy my doctors recommendations. The posters digging out facts have kept me sane. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this great little Freedom of Speech site. I will miss YSB if you close down. It’s been a blast! 🔥

I would like to thank you Ed for providing a place for everyone to vent their anger on different issues.
Particularly I think that we must of had a small measure in the running away, by that Bitch ardern!
Still think she was the worst PM and run the most corrupt government ever!
( if she comes home to the premiere of her film, I think I will go and wave the banner).
I have always regreted not coming to that gathering organised by Chuck, to meet some of you.
I have chucked some ideas at you lot to wind up, some fly, some are like a lead ballon!
I would miss you lot if it closed. I came here via Whale and Kiwinlog too!
What would I do not coming here half a doz times a day. There is no replacement!

YSB is largely a political blog & post election 2024 sees us in the middle of an election cycle. The optimists hope that National will change things & the pessimists know they won’t but it’s too early to know for sure. This IMHO is the root reason behind the dropoff of comments. If only the Mad Queen announced a political comeback the comment counter would spin off its axis!

Like Flightlessbirdblog & The Standard the volume of comments rise & commenters reappear when events worthy of rant or debate surface. Circumstances will change.

I say
The optimists hope that National will change things & the realists know they won’t
———————-
Anyway when notional do things they are horrendous events that have long term negative repercussions
Eg passed the RMA in 1991
Then allowed leaky homes
messed up the electricity supply chain
Refused to facilitate a pension scheme ever though clearly beneficial

Keys
-signed UNDRIP
-allowed massive Maorification
-paid out massive tready settlements – one thing they DID DO
bastards
-In 9 long years never had a tax cut nor even indexed the tax bracket.
-increased benefits in real terms (Why? )
-Signed us up for Billions a year for Paris climate accord – a slush fund for politicians like keys
But hey, we were going to be pest free by 2040 or 2050 or some shit

The political pests are getting worse
Can we eradicate them ?

the current lot
stumbling and mumbling
so fecking woke they are blind to reality.
Long live the Pope
All hail Tavistock

Ed – please persevere and keep YSB going – ask for donations $3,500 is not a lot and only 100 donations of $35 would solve the cost issue. I have ideas on how to spread the interest in subjects outside Beehive politics and would share on a continuing blog.

Lets go for 35 giving $100 and hopefully a lot more contribute to give ED a bit of spare in the kitty to keep things running.

Well, didn’t want you left hanging and thinking, now how the hell can a candy hole be a slur…. Afrikaans is great for not being literally translated.
Luiperd – Lazy horse
dubble loop hael geweer – two walk hail gun
kameel perd – camel horse
aardappel – earth apple
moer naaier – nut sower ( the last one is a way a gentleman greets a woman of distinction. as in Goeie more, Moer naaier…) Try it the next time you bump into a Saffa.

Yup Afrikaans, Gat – hole. Snoep – Google translate fails here although the Afrikaans word snoep translates to “goody” in English. It is an informal term for food that is particularly enjoyable to eat, such as cake or ice cream.

BUT

In this sense Snoep can also be used as an informal term to describe someone who is mean or tight-fisted.

so ” tight-fisted hole”.

gat is often appended to other adjectives such as Luigat Lui = lazy. Or precedes a an adjective such as “gatvol”.
I only speak Afrikaans as a second language so I am sure there are more proficient commentators out there

It would be a shame if YSB folds, but I can understand your point ED. Looking around the sites I occasionally visit, after reading YSB I think their volume of comments have dropped a bit as well. I’m not commenting as much as the weather has improved so I can get outside more —in Wellington you have to make the most of it.
I have never had any signing in problems either on my desktop or tablet. I have just assumed it was mainly with those that use their phones. Also I never sign out. On a routine basis I have to sign in again ( every 2-3 weeks) but I have always thought that was part of the system because it has been like that from the start.

Ed, I have greatly appreciated your open Blog and enjoyed it immensely. Regretfully, I have been unable to post as much as I would like as even being an ancient thin lipped curmudgeon pushing well through his 70’s I work every day and with even more work being pushed on me, I am finding time difficult to put up worth while contributions, as much as I would like. While my silence has nothing to do with dissatisfaction with this Blog and your great work, time constraints have, but this will change.

This is by far the best Blog in this country and it would be disappointing not to be able to access it on a daily basis and enjoy the humour and wisdom of many on here, I am happy to call my friend.

With a wide range of contributors offering their experience, connections, expertise and knowledge there was usually something to be learned and a reason to visit the site a couple of times a day.
The Kea/Hunty banter was amusing to start with, but got out of hand and became more offensive than entertaining. Nature loves a vacuum and it wasn’t lost before another antagonistic pair emerged that first entertained then mostly just annoy. We value a site that is uncensored, but are reluctant to apply any self-moderation.
Sadly the information is mostly regurgitation of articles from sites I wouldn’t visit like NZH and Stuff, often with no supplement of additional knowledge or critical evaluation. It sure is sad to see but I thank you for the fun over the years.

Sadly for you sir other items in the news affect how other people think and react.
If you have any idea about what is going on in the news world you would know that there is a worldwide scrap on between Google, Facebook, Bing, and many governments to control the news. Indeed in Australia Google now pays for news items, in NZ this govt. is stiing on the fence and various forms of this are being negotiated in many countries.
The issue here is that like it or not news is often reported on FB as or very soon after it happens by people with cellphones that are on the spot. Many of the same people orothers diseminate that news these day via twitter which allow comments as does FB.
Twitter is a channel where anyone can say most things.
Fb has a much stronger commenting policy and its still using Fact checkers. as do other channels.

Its not in-depth but its still news and so the local “news servers” pick that up and write what they choose. Google, for example, picks that up at no cost, censors out what they don’t want you to know and sends it out as does Bing.
Like it or not Google and Bing manage the world’s news these days.
So a diversity of news and views is great.
That you choose not to read other channels is fine and your choice as always, just as you can read by the information posted on HYS.
But of course you don’t and while you may not want to read it others do and some days those links create more conversations and allow others to share their views.
You can select what you read, BUT you are not entitled to censor the posting.
And yeh I think there is a lot of unnecessary slaggin off of others.

The blog has followed a natural progression,
It was a welcome relief in 2019.
No waiting for control freak moderators to decide if THEY like it.

The CONvid time was active but many were literally locked up on Home D with limited other people contact
Then the Bitch shot through as in after a serious curry meal.
Outta gas. I could have chucked a can of gas on her, no probs.

Then we had the 9 month run down to an election and lot of sweet people imaginarily thinking Matt King might attain something. A former one term, back bench notional MP. Ok then!

Then we had an election and as I say this lot is a caretaker govt marking time until the next vicious onslaught of liebour/GRN/TPM.
So not a lot locally happening.
We have had the return of D J Trump so that will be interesting.
Some of his appointments will be extreme disappointments.
The swamp runs deep.

$3500
I won’t do 10% coz I’m not the big guy but $200 up front. Don’t want monthly bits. Just set and forget.
Up to you.
Another $150 on 1 April 2025 if we are still here.

I Sincerely appreciate the effort you have made in the last 2000 days.

To be fair this is mainly the evening 6pm post.
Seems they watch some teevee then rush to Slaters blog to to make a critique.
They might be better to just avoid teevee
poor old Revtech had great difficulty avoiding the teevee

less comments of decent quality are better than lots of drivel one has to wade through .

That lurker raises very important points about alternative sources for news. I have a host of Telegram Channels I peruse on a daily basis and get updates from a number of American substack contributors. A lot of what they talk about never makes it to our very shallow MSM. Although I have X, I don’t actively use it, but Ed’s links are very good. People that frequent this blog are hungry for alternative view points, and by posting stuff we come across helps spread the counter narrative that world governments are desperately trying to keep from us. It also helped me realise that I am not a complete nutter ( my extended family all think I am deranged – especially around Vaccines, Ukraine and Trump), as so many think the same way to a greater or lesser degree. Keep up the good work, we are probably the most informed people in New Zealand….

I like many others left kiwiblog after the 2020 election when everybody with two brain cells could see it was a stolen election and the host and moderators denied what was patently obvious. I got banned by whaleoil for reposting a meme that they themselves posted so it was a welcome respite to find YSB and a place where
I could swear if it was warranted without fear of getting banned.
I’d hate to see this site close Ed. Have you considered having Google ads to help raise revenue? Outside of elections it does get quite, but this is still one of the best places to find out real news without the BS legacy media filter.
