By photographing two separate nighttime scenes, one in the northern hemisphere and the other in the southern hemisphere, amateur astrophotographer Maroun Habibcleverly produced this dazzling image of the complete galactic plane visible from Earth.
Is it possible to capture the entire plane of our galaxy in a single image? Yes, but not in one exposure — and it took some planning to do it in two. The top part of the featured image is the night sky above Lebanon, north of the equator, taken in 2017 June. The image was taken at a time when the central band of the Milky Way Galaxy passed directly overhead. The bottom half was similarly captured six months later in latitude-opposite Chile, south of Earth’s equator. Each image therefore captured the night sky in exactly the opposite direction of the other, when fully half the Galactic plane was visible.
Wow
That’s an amazing photo. And then combining the two seamlessly, it’s just WOW!
Beautiful. It is good to remember we are just a speck in a dust cloud. Keeps our worries in perspective.
Hahaha what a crock of shit. It’s probably nothing more than a good piece of Photoshop work. Or something dreamed up by an AI algorithm dressed up as reality. Pretty, though. I’ll give you that.
NOTE: It’s upside down, mate! ?
Geez Ed that’s spin.
It isn’t one photo its two put together to make a picture.
The picture is right purdy so folk will just accept your inaccuracy.
Are you auditioning for lefty propagandist?
The words under the picture tells you it is two pictures stitched together. It tells you where and how far apart in time they were taken to help create the final image.
Got that
Was being tongue in cheek re the headline.
Yeah…. but it’s still upside down isn’t it? Like that ‘artwork’ (I forget the one) which was hung upside down in a gallery LOL
p.s. I’m pretty good on Photoshop and I’ve rotated it so that the car is the right way up. This means I needed to airbrush out the (now upside down) image credit on the bottom. I could have retained this and rotated it so that it appears the right way up…. but I couldn’t really be bothered.
I thought the contrast could do with a boost too, so I did that as well. It looks nicer now. It will look good on my phone…. LOL
I honestly don’t think the pic is actually a photo of the fucking Milky Way. It’s just a fancy bit of wanky design by someone who is good on Photoshop. I’m thinking of adding a photo of MH370 coming out of the ether just for a laugh…. but I’m afraid people might take it seriously!
It was a Matisse at MOMA New York
