The simple reason avocado prices have soared to $12.50

Avocado lovers shocked by the $10 price tag in some supermarkets will have been stunned to see reports of the fruit selling for $12.50 at an Auckland fruit market.

But what is the reason for the jaw-dropping prices – and more importantly for those missing their avocado on toast, when will the prices come down?

NZ Avocado chief executive Jen Scoular said there’s a simple explanation behind the sky-rocketing prices.

“Avocado is a seasonal fruit, and the season is June to March, so this is a period when we are in short supply,” she said.

She said amidst New Zealanders’ growing love of the fruit, the high prices reflect the low numbers available.

It’s been a difficult season for some growers, who have been forced to cope with weather issues and damage to crops from wind-burn and rot.

But Scoular said that hasn’t impacted much on current prices.

“It has been a challenging season, but that hasn’t necessarily meant that we are shorter at this time of the year than normal.”

As for the question of when prices will come down?

“The new season starts in June, so not too long for new season fruit.”

I might need to call in some favours from clients who have them in the BOP.

I do miss Mrs Holy’s guacamole. It’s world famous in the waikato!

  1. I’ve eaten avocado.

I ate it before it became fashionable.

I’ve even made and eaten guacamole.

I found avocado a very average tasting fruit that needs to be made into guacamole to taste anything like good.

Avocados may be priced at $12.50 each right now.

Not only do I not care but question the report that they are selling for this level of price.

  2. That’s not how Left economics works! Avocado orchardists, the wholesalers and the supermarkets should all be willing to make a loss. Much like the Left expect landlords to do upgrades on their houses to rent and not expect a rent increase, or have a huge spending platform and not have a $11.7billion fiscal hole.

    • You are correct Colinxy, afterall smashed avo is a necessity of life to a lefty “JAFA”.
I remember the first time I had avo, I thought it was like eating tastless soap. Very subtle taste that is now a favourite but not at Ponsenby “JAFA”prices!

Cream cheese with chives, avo and smoked salmon (or with bacon)
or avo with prawn’s and a light olive oil and lemon dressing. Devine!

  3. Don’t worry. The types who eat smashed avocado on toast while blocking the footpath outside a trendy cafe won’t worry about the price. Instead it will be a badge of honour; “look at me……I can afford to waste money on this crap”.

Reminds me of a story I heard a while back about a cafe in Wellington now selling a $20 cup of
    coffee.

You’ll experience “an earthy flavour with aspects of nectarines, plums &
    cocoa inside the cup”.

Outside the cup you’ll find a pretentious wanker who spends twenty
    dollars on a coffee.

  4. I cant be that simple!
I think there needs to be a Govt inquiry 🙂
Is Sir Michael of Ohope available?

    Inquiries to the left of them;
    white papers to the right of them;
into the valley of bureaucracy rode the 600 public servants.

  5. This week I started a job next to an Avocado planting.
With the strong winds there have been heaps on the ground.
I have just had a huuuge avocado and have 10 more in the fruit bowl.
    All free.
    Eat your heart out !
