Weather: Forecasters warn large weather system set to bring heavy rain to parts of NZ

  • Large weather system likely to bring “atmospheric river”, significant rain to some areas this week.
  • Heavy rain, strong winds tipped, especially in western and northern parts of both islands.
  • Overnight temperatures set to soar this week, reaching the mid-to-high-teens for many areas.

Forecasters are warning a large weather system is likely to bring an “atmospheric river” to New Zealand this week.
It’s set to be “one of the more promising” rain-bearing systems seen in a while amid “dire” ongoing drought conditions throughout the North Island.
MetService recorded parts of Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato had received less than half the typical March rainfall.
“It would seem that March is carrying the baton, continuing the legacy of a dry 2025 so far,” meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane said.
But much-needed rainfall is expected in the second half of the week, with a large weather system approaching from the Tasman Sea ”one of the more promising rain-bearing weather systems we have seen in a while”.

We will see. More scaremongering.

Better be more than the odd shower, or we will rubbish weather forecasters.
But then we do that already!

Simon Upton, Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, tells banking inquiry its ‘entirely appropriate’ for banks and insurers to consider climate risks in order to ensure the sustainability of profits over

Parliament’s environment watchdog has warned MPs that banks and insurers aren’t going to stand behind people who invest in properties and businesses increasingly at risk from a wide range of climate pressures.
Simon Upton, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, told the Government’s banking inquiry this on Monday where he advised MPs to turn their attention to providing “some certainty” around the Government’s framework for climate adaptation.
In Upton’s view, this means helping the public to understand climate risks and to clarify the extent to which taxpayers will stand as a risk “backstop.” Upton described this as becoming an “increasingly urgent priority”.
“If we could do that, well, insurers and financiers will be in a better position to manage risks responsibly. But those risks are rising. You can’t turn a blind eye to them,” he said.
