Confirmed: Google Favors Liberal News Outlets Over Conservative Ones
  • Google’s algorithms appear to favor the likes of CNN, The New York Times, and other major outlets by a significant margin, a new study from the Columbia Journalism review notes
  • CJR’s study also shows that Google’s Top Stories box directs users to liberal news outlets over conservative outlets by a 5 to 1 margin

Why would you trust Google or Facebook to give you what you are searching for?

Google’s algorithms favor liberal-leaning news outlets over conservative ones by a significant margin, according to a study Northwestern University researchers conducted.

More than 62 percent of all article impressions came from sources rated as left-leaning, while only 11 percent came from conservative-leaning outlets, notes the study, which was published in May. Researchers collected 6,302 unique links to news articles in Google’s Top Stories box. Each of those links represents an article impression.

The top 20 percent of news sources accounted for roughly 86 percent of article impressions, with CNN, The News York Times and The Washington Post accounting for 23 percent of all impressions, the study notes. These data underscore the degree with which Google is concentrating users’ attention on a narrow band of news sources.

The study raises important questions about whether the company is tinkering with its algorithms.

Google manipulates its search results manually, according to documents the The Daily Caller obtained in April. Two policies dubbed the “misrepresentation policy” and the “good neighbor policy” inform the company’s blacklist, which is maintained by Google’s Trust & Safety team, the Caller report noted.

A number of conservative news sites are included in Google’s blacklist, according to the Caller’s documents. Gateway Pundit, Matt Walsh’s blog, Gary North’s blog “teapartyeconomist.com” and The American Spectator are but a few websites that Google blacks out.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has continued to deny claims that the company manipulates search terms. “This is working at scale, we don’t manually intervene on any particular search result,”he told lawmakers in February, referring to questions about why search terms for “idiot” returned a photo of President Donald Trump.

Tech experts have expressed concerns that most tech companies are not up to the task of distinguishing between legitimate content and hate speech.

Emily Williams, a data scientist and founder of Whole Systems Enterprises, for one, argues that Facebook’s lack of transparency about the frailties of its artificial intelligence-deep learning instruments makes it difficult for people to understand why and how content is being throttled. She believes most algorithms have a 70 percent success rate, meaning roughly 30 percent of the time platforms are unintentionally nixing content.

“We have no insight into the methodology these researchers used. Other researchers have found exactly the opposite. The fact is that like Google search and Google News, our top stories feature has absolutely no signal for a story’s political point of view and simply reflects the overall corpus of news and information on the web,” a Google representative told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

  1. It’s nice to have a study confirm something that has been suspected for a long time now. This image was particularly hammered with the firing by Google of James Damore.

Google’s motto used to be “Don’t be evil” but they’ve dropped it (officially). Their unofficial motto has removed the word “Don’t”.

Like Cadbury here in NZ, Google’s trust by the public has plummeted.

I wish they’d stop using the word Liberal for Left. The Left is not in any discernible way for freedom and liberty.

    • Doublespeak.
“Doublespeak is language that deliberately obscures, disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words”
Liberalism is in fact totalitarianism in realspeak.
Mark Latham covered this in his NSW maiden speech last week.

What is ‘hate speech’ that is being bandied about this week my media filth?
Generally it is your speech that others hate, even if true.
Banning of so-called hate speech is a building block in the wall of totalitarianism.
The NZ cops are being weaponised in this ideological war.
The word ‘socialism’ (be fair and include everyone) is a doublespeak word on the road to Totalitarianism. Its a political building block.
Just follow Russia in the decade 1915 to 1925 for a workbook example.

  2. I have changed to this search engine on all my devices. Fuck google; especially after the disgraceful sacking of James Damore for crimes against the SJW Orthodoxy

    Get woke – go broke.

  3. I dislike Google.
When they first arrived their algorithms just found the most popular site.
So if you were looking for a subject the most useful shodl come up.
Now they have changed it to showing the bets shopping sites fro that subject.
Sometimes I just want information not shopping.
So yes we should try to use other search engines

  4. It’s bloody hard to break away from google and their services.

I use protonmail a lot now. My best buddy has it too so when we email each other it’s fully encrypted. you can set emails to delete after a period of time. very cool. it’s a bit ugly but nice when sharing disgraceful memes (hate speech cindy would say). the issue is – everyone else is fucking gmail so google are reading your shit anyway!

I use the duckduckgo widget on my phone. it’s nice. opens a search in their browser. hit the flame icon at the end and all traces of your search are gone.

ya know google were going to turn out to be shit bags when they went with “do no evil” as their slogan. they may as well have said “evil as fuck”

you should all be installing ublock origin on your browser too. and privacy badger. just makes it harder.

the pricks now identify you by your PC insides too. so you can get extensions that trick each website into thinking you’re on something different eg a mac, then intel PC, then a ryzen pc.

    I could rant for hours.

Summary – big tech are scum
