What significance does the phrase “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,” have in our technology-oriented future?

It’s meaning is that we value freedom of speech, and the right of everyone to express their opinion, even if that opinion is one we do not like. Unless we all have free speech, none of us really do. An open society is only possible if the government allows everyone to make their views known.

In terms of applying to to “our technology-oriented future” the value of free and open debate is still important. The concern for many is that the ability to disseminate ideas is no longer controlled by the government. It is largely controlled by a small number of large companies. If those companies decided to silence someone by barring certain speech on their systems, they effectively have a censorship power that was once only available to governments that did not respect free speech.

  1. F*ckbook and Youtube can be as PC as they want. There will always be a platform for free speech. If people like Louisa Ball-sac and that iranian chick had their way every one of us would have been arrested and sent to reeducation camps. If had MY way, I’d take ’em for a “little trip” on Pinochet Helicopter Services!

  2. The government should not be empowered to monitor or determine any aspect of speech or expression. The government goes too far with censorship now in my view when a person is gaoled for a transgression against a censorship ruling.

The suggestion children or youth may see unsuitable material is a nonsense with sound parental guidance being important for the very young. Where parental guidance is lacking greater issues are in play and censorship affecting all is not the solution.

  3. I use duck-duck-go search engine. Today searched for utube and Jordan Peterson. Somehow a google search happened and it said “JP’s utube clips couldn’t be viewed anonymously and requested a sign in”. Reworded search fixed those bastards!
