    • You are right but not for the reason you stated. Mayor Island is not in view, it’s around to the right.
What you see is the hills at Whangamata.
We were in the Bowentown campground. Nice clean place to stay.

      • Not bad then. Haven’t been to Bowentown for a while. So had a bit of a guess.
The Bay is interesting from the various viw points. It is a big curve all the way from north of Waihi to the cape so matter where you go you have a different view especially once you go up a hill somewhere.
where I klve is right in the middle of greerton and recently someone cut down some trees where I looked in the direction of bownetown. I was puzzled by the hills I could see as they were well out of the range of the kaimai’s. Went to google maps and it was obvious what I was seeing was the hills at Bowentown.

A good way to see this is to go up to the Minden Lookout (which was built by Omokoroa Te Puna Lions in the year I was president and is now under going a rebuild because of its age, A bit like me), and you can see the curve and right up the coats to the Islands or down to the Cape on a very clear day. You can do the same at the top of Ohope Hill or above the camp at Ohiwa. ( The Regional council had a sign at the top of the Ohiwa hill which pointed out the beaches. I walked up there a few times and one day realised that their sign was back to front. It have been there for a longtime and no one noticed. Had to tell them it was wrong. The sign maker never noticed, the people who carried it up the hill and planted it never noticed even though they were looking at the beaches and the locals never complained including the farmer whose land it was on. People are not that observant.
