AN ARMAGH teenager has been charged with making social media death threats to the New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Matthew Burns (19), of Dundalk Road, Newtownhamilton, wearing a blue shirt and glasses appeared before Newry Magistrates Court on Friday.

A PSNI detective Constable from the crime cyber unit  said he could connect the accused to the charges.

The accused’s parents and sister attended the court.

As the charges were read out, Mr Burns’ mother held her hand to her head and closed her eyes.

Ms Ardern recently touched the hearts of the New Zealand people when speaking out after a mass shootings at two mosques in the city of Christchurch.

A Twitter message to the prime minster was said to have been made directly after the terrorist attack.

The court heard that a photo of a gun silencer was sent with the message: “You’re next”.

The defendant was further charged with making similar threats to the Mayor of London Sadiq Kahn.

The accused was arrested on Thursday and taken to Banbridge PSNI station for questioning.

Two dates of offending are said to have taken place on Twitter and Facebook in December 2018 and March 20, 2019.

During interview Mr Burns stated he had far-right political leanings and had negative sentiments towards minorities, Muslims and the LGBTQ community.

Volumes of similar posts towards minorities were said to be under investigation by the PSNI cyber unit.

An application was made to restrict reporting due to the defendant’s believed poor mental health and attempts at self harm indicating a suicidal nature.

District judge McGarrity rejected the application due to a lack of medical evidence before the courts.

The defendant was released on £500 bail to his parents custody with a £1000 cash surety with the condition that he has no internet connection and adheres to a curfew.

The magistrate warned Mr Burns: “The police are going to be watching you…next time the courts may not be so sympathetic as today.”

The case was adjourned to May 8.

Another nutter from overseas meddling in our peaceful country…..

  1. “Volumes of similar posts towards minorities”
I would love to know their definition of the word “volumes”. Must be a lot of nutters out there who would want to do harm to those they disagree with. I suppose if you push someone far enough then they will eventually retaliate.

    • What do you expect when your kind post this kind of untruthful stuff against Jacinda. All these alt-right blogs are doing is inflaming the situation and encouraging these alt-right mad men.

      • If that’s the best you can do then you need to go back to school to learn a bit of history.
Oh I forgot, you lefties are rewriting history as we speak. If it doesn’t fit your narrow small minded views, then it has to be changed.

      • “your kind”. What kind is that? Nobody here condones death threats or violence. Death threats are taking it too far and the Irish lad should be watched to make sure he doesn’t escalate. However, kids learn at primary school that sticks and stones may break my bones but words don’t hurt me. Suppression of all thoughts as a result of a few nutters is just making the situation worse for those who need to express themselves verbally so they do not do something worse.

        • That’s where you are wrong WG. Kids these days go to school and are taught how and what to complain about. It’s all about the feelz and love for each other.

          • Except it isn’t, I have no desire to ‘love’ everybody’, nor do i wish them harm but why should i ‘have’ to let anybody into my space?

  2. I’m no JA fan, but but i reckon that kid needs a good slapping around for making a threat like that. Threatening to murder is never ok.

  3. That photo is just so emotional isn’t it.
However back in the real world which nobody wants to talk about Jacinda still leads a government which used immigration fears as a big election tool and has one of the countries most notorious race baiters as deputy PM.
People have such short memories and are so selective in their beliefs when it comes to heaping sycophantic praise on people who reinvent themselves as healers like Ardern has done post Christchurch.
Hypocritical and fake are more the words I would use.

    • Jacinda was exhibiting her heartfelt pain at living in a country where such a terrible thing happened. For once in your life, show a bit of compassion towards her.

      • Yeah as usual just appeal to emotion but ignore the other more uncomfortable issues about the reality of this government I raised.
One of Jacinda’s statements was “there is no place for racism in NZ”.
Well unfortunately there is a place for racism and xenophobia in her own cabinet and make no mistake she will overlook it if it means holding on to power.
That’s just facts even though you don’t want to acknowledge it.
        Hence she is hypocritical.

        • Speaking of which, can I ask why Chris Fa’afou is not actually in Cabinet? He seems to be one of the only Labour party MP’s with a few clues and sincerity. There are a number, as we know, who are not worth the positions they hold. Competence is not a requirement for a placement in the hirearchy it appears.

          • …..”why Chris Fa’afou is not actually in Cabinet”…..

Because if he was appointed the promised gender balance in Cabinet would become even less attainable. Unless Kris has sex reassignment surgery or finds a closet to come out of he’s stuck where he is.

In Labour ability doesn’t matter…….it’s all about feelz & balance.

        • No you are just being so mean to Jacinda. For someone who didn’t want to be PM, I think she is doing a wonderful job. She shows she cares about the people.

          • Hasn’t she got enough people running interference for her, she is being paid a lot of money to be doing a job and that includes controlling ‘her’ cabinet. Yes, she is an accidental PM you are quite right, is that good enough? You think so, I don’t.

She should hold herself and others should to, to the same standard a man would be held to and not just a Labour party man but a National Party man.

Then I would be saying well done, but that is not what we have got. Women should not get a pass just because they are women. How insulting.

          • Women can multi task you know, i agree Jacinda has empathy in spades, but there is ordinary every day stuff to do, not just your fairy dust. Are you with the press? If so how about doing your job too.

            0

            • Hi Rachael. Men can multi task too. I flew aeroplanes all my working life. In an emergency, and there were a few, if I couldn’t multi task I would be dead now.

      • I didn’t do it, I can’t even fathom what it going on in the man’s mind to enable him to do it. I, and a couple of hundred thousand law abiding people who own firearms, are being punished for it.
